The little giraffe calf was born on the 1st December last year to Quiver, at Blackpool Zoo. We took our grandson for a pre Christmas treat on 18th December so it was just 18 days old. Also a picture of our favourite little pet Lewis who was then three and a half. Pam.

I had part of the email below from Chris at Pennywell Farm who sent his two Female Reindeer to be covered by Padfoot in the Autumn.

First the very sad news, my lovely one eyed reindeer was found dead this morning which is really bad news as I was very fond of her. I will be getting an autopsy to see what caused the premature death.

The follow up email arrive as I was writing tonight Diary.

Just had the autopsy. Very sad as it was in calf. We saw the embryo calf,
perfectly formed. It died of a twisted gut which surprised me as it hasn’t
been out doing much rolling or running around. Interestingly we saw the gut
twisted and also all the inflammation that caused , nasty!

The news is a terrible shame, but it has shown that Padfoot was fertile before he died, and that there is a good chance that our Reindeer Females are in Calf. Chris has asked us to find him two more Females for Pennywell Farm.

Twisted guts are not easy to diagnose. It causes animals a lot of pain. They are not able to eat or pass droppings. Operating on animals with a twisted gut is very unlikely to be successful. My only knowledge of it is with Horses. All that I have know to have it have died.

The Badgers mating was only the second time that I have seen it. It is also a good sign that there are Cubs in the Sett.

The Geese were on the Lake this Morning. They went on to the Island, the Goose looking as if she was placing a few twigs and grass, maybe the beginning of a nest.

One of the Reindeer has shed one of her Antlers. She must had done so when she got out of the Reindeer Field. Unfortunately when I walked around the Field to try to find it I could not see it. I had hoped to have mounted the three sets of the Females Antler to hang in the Holiday Cottages. It is one of the Reindeer that doesn’t normally get out.

It didn’t take one of the Squirrels long to get onto the tray of the new feeding site. I washed down the Squirrel Guard as I thought that the Squirrel may be getting a little grip on some mud that had got on the guard. I also put some oil on it to make it slippery, but one of the Squirrels still managed to get on to the tray.

The Fox in the Valley last night had caught a Rabbit for his supper.

FOUR PHOTOGRAPHS ALL TAKEN AT THE TROPICALBUTTERFLY HOUSE NEAR WORKSOp.LYNNE.

Here are some photos of Rosie who is a Tortie. She doesn’t look much like a Calico. What do you call this type in England please? Rosie’s Mum in Toronto.

The way that one of the Badgers was collecting bedding and taking it back to the Sett a couple of nights ago, I would reckon that one has given birth.

We tidied up the Island this afternoon and strimmed the grass back so that we will be able to see the Goose sitting her eggs. That is of course if they decide to nest on the Island. There is a chance that with the grass cut back they will not bother to nest on the Island. I don’t think that will be the case, although it may take them a couple of visits to get use to it. The Geese landed on the Lake this morning. The webcams were on when they flew in, their reflection being seen a long time in the Lake before they landed, They only stayed a little over an hour before flying off.

We altered the Bird feeders today in the hope that we can keep the Squirrels off. The Squirrels were taking over the Bird feeders. We have also put a Squirrel deterrent under the tray that the feeders are now on, but I wouldn’t be surprised if they don’t find a way of getting to the Bird food.

The Squirrel feeder and obstacle course is in the Badger Field, so I guess if they cant get on to the Bird feeders they will go there. Most days the Squirrel are knocking the front of their feeder out causing all of their peanuts to finish up on the ground. I have got to put a different front onto the box, and try to put an addition to the course.

We are having a few problems with our broadband connections that is causing the webcams to go off intermittently. I have been trying to get it sorted out since Thursday. Unforetunately the initial contact is with an overseas call centre who are not opening another line of contact that will sort the problem out. I normally see that the webcams are off very quickly unless I have to go out.

Imagine my surprise when this landed between the sunbeds in Cyprus. Used to come every afternoon and wasn’t at all bothered about the people leaping up from their sunbathing as though an alien had landed! Janet South Yorks.

It was a lot milder at Denbury today. There wasn’t any sun but it was probably the warmest day of the year. The milder weather seemed to bring the Lake alive. The Geese were on the Lake first thing this morning. They stayed the whole day, leaving just before I went to feed the Badger, but not before both the Goose and the Gander had spent a good while on the Island. Surely they are going to nest. If they don’t return in the morning I will take the boat to the Island and strim so that the ramp and the nesting place can be seen on the webcam.

On the Pond next to the Lake the little Grebe had returned and were diving for Fish and a couple of Mallard Ducklings had hatched, the may have been more Ducklings in the Reeds. I did try to put both the Little Grebe and the Mallards on the webcam but I did not catch them on it. On returning a Kingfisher darted in front of me, it was then that I saw the shadow of a few Carp that the milder weather had brought to the surface. When I got back to the Farm House I found the Carp on the webcam. None were Pike I am pleased to saw. There were some big Fish, one I estimated must have been getting on for 20lb. I was a little worried after seeing the Otter in the Valley in the Autumn that it may have taken some Fish, before I had electrified around the Lake. If the Otter had had any of the Fish it would have left the scales, but I did not find any. Touch wood I was lucky.

Here’s a pic of our unexpected snowfall. The bird and squirrel dishes are somewhere under there …you may be able to see their footprints! I managed to shovel them out and fill them…only one missing, but it will appear when it all melts. Marie/NJ.

At Denbury as John and Marie we have had quite bad floods at the end of our drive. Also we still have a lot of snow that has not melted.

There was a Little Egret on the Lake this morning. When I changed the cameras over at about 7.45am he was on the waters edge. I wasn’t that concerned that it would have had one of our Fish for breakfast as in the weather most of the Fish will be at the bottom of the Lake, and I reckon that he must have been resigned to that itself in the way that it looked so uninterested in Fishing. Little Egrets tend to be a little more selective in the size of Fish that they take, unlike the Heron that will stab at anything that move even though the Fish will to large to eat, causing damage or death to the Fish. It stayed for about three quarters of an hour before flying off, probably to a shallow ornamental Fish Pond in someones Garden. Today’s visit by the Little Egret was only the second time that I have seen one on the Lake, the last being five to six years ago in the Spring. I was driving back to the Farm House along our drive when I noticed one Fishing from the Island, on stopping to watch it I saw two Heron next to each other. One of the Herons was a lot larger than the other that made me think, maybe wrongly that the parent was feeding the youngster or teaching it to Fish. I didn’t wait to find out, a clap of my hands soon had them flying off.

Nice to see your input on the Forum Taffy. What I have written is not meant as a rebuff to yours or Lindsay’s Forum inputs. Denbury is surrounded by many hundreds if not thousands of Trees, so what I have written is not sentiment’s for a couple of Trees in a back garden. Ivy is a food source for Birds, it is also eaten by Deer, Sheep and Cows etc, and is used as a Roost in the Winter by Bats and Birds. It is also believed to have healing properties for Animals. So Ivy can be an important plant for many reasons. Unfortunately it is the cause of the majority of fallen Trees in our Woods at Denbury and others Trees where Ivy may grow. Live and Healthy Trees also supply food for Birds and Wildlife. Ivy not only causes Trees to fall, it will also take more water from the ground than the Trees, stopping the Trees growth, at times causing Trees to die. At Denbury the Bats use the Quarries for their Winter Roosts. Trees are no less important than any other living form. In fact Trees more so for a lot of reasons. Why should we let Trees that could be many hundred of years, or any age to die through being overwhelmed with Ivy. I will do no less to protect the Trees at Denbury than I do for Birds, Bats and all other Wildlife. If that means removing the Ivy to stop the Trees from being over burdened and top heavy, that makes them easier to be blown over, or make the heavy weight that snow settling on the Ivy, that causes them to snap or fall over and die, I will do so. Mind you there is so many Trees over burdened with Ivy in the Woods, it will take a couple of life times to remove it all.

Hello all,I love watching your webcams and reading the diary and forum, just thought you may like to see this email sent to me. While you are having such cold weather, we are having dreadful heat. I am in Brisbane Queensland, our heat is sultry and humid. These pictures were taken in Victoria where they have very dry heat. One feels so sorry for the animals in these conditions. Thank you for your lovely site, Regards Janet.
In Victoria the temperature has been above 44 degrees all week and they are forecasting another week of 40+ temperatures. Power is failing, trains have stopped running because tracks are buckling under the heat . It

A few more pictures of Oxford if you would like them, I expect you will be over-whelmed with snow pictures now!

1/ St Michael at the North Gate, this Saxon tower used to form part of the old City wall believed to be the oldest building in Oxford CH

2/ The memorial commemorates the “Oxford Martyrs,” Anglican bishops Hugh Latimer and Nicholas Ridley and the Archbishop of Canterbury Thomas Cranmer, who were executed in Oxford on the orders of Queen Mary Tudor. CH

3/ New College Lane looking east towards the gate of New College Oxford. CH

4/ New College lane looking west. CH

5/ After a walk around Oxford taking pictures it’s into the Royal Blenheim for a couple of pints. CH

Checking the Valley on the webcam yesterday I could see what looked like a fallen tree that seemed to be blocking the the path that leads into the gap at the far end on the left hand side. As I had not had the time to inspect for any damage that the snow had caused I decided to have a quick look before I fed the Badgers.

Two trees had fallen onto the path. Both were Ash and had been caused to fall by the weight of the snow that had formed on the Ivy. One of the trees was very large and was part of group that had grown attached to each other. The tree had some rot in the base and would have died within a few years. I should think the others will have the rot and will also die or fall with the wind or snow.

Through the gap into the part of the valley that you cannot see, leads to another part of Ash Wood where another very large Ash has also fallen, not so much fallen as snapped off at the base, again snow had form on the Ivy the weight being to heavy for the tree to bare. This tree was in good condition before it fell. There were other trees in this area that were down. I cant remember if they were down before the snow. As soon as it is easier to walk through the snow to get to the Wood I will I will see if there is any other damage.

On the way back I saw a group four Roe Deer further in the Valley cross the foot path and on entering the Valley another Roe Deer ran in front of me. Any one watching the webcam would have seen it.

ALL TAKEN IN THE PEAK DISTRICT. LYNNE.

I have emailed Libor my contact a the Brno Zoo to find out what has happened to the Giraffe Calf. The Brno Zoo are members of the World Zoo Organization (WZO) that have standards that members have to conform to for the welfare of Zoo animals. I would not have allowed the webcam on the website if I had any concerns about the Zoo.

It is easy to criticise, but wrong when the full facts are not known and the facts are not known about the Giraffe Calf. Unfortunately with live stock of any type, there are always going to be dead stock, that life. We don’t know the circumstances of the pen that the Giraffe Cow was kept in. Was it safer for the Calf to be kept from the rest of the Herd until a little older? There is no way that the Zoo would do any thing that was detrimental to the Giraffe’s welfare, or to the Polar Bears. I believe that all Wild Animals should be in the Wild, but the real world is not like that. Most people have visited Zoo as entertainment for themselves and their Children not to see endangered Animals.

You have a choice, If you don’t like a TV program you turn it off. If you don’t like a webcam don’t watch it. To much criticism will only stop other webcam projects.

Elsie, please don’t take this as a criticism of yourself, it is not meant to be. In 2006 Paignton Zoo had a fire when 3 of their Giraffe burnt to death. Large inside and outside enclosures did not stop the accident. I was just after the fire in talks with Paignton to have webcams from the Zoo on our site. One of the reasons that we did not proceed with the project was that they wanted a delay of 24 hours in the broadcasting, that meant that the webcams would not have been live only recordings. A little short sighted I thought. Live webcams may well have seen the start of a fire.
