Elaine reminded us that it is Thornton’s Birthday on Tuesday. How time has gone. Vicky is going to take some photographs of him for Tuesdays Photo Page. That’s of course if he allows her to. For as Vicky and her Family have been spoiling him with treats, now every time he sees any of the Family he gives them a bash with his head to let them know he wants a treat. As you can tell he is well again. I am sure that he was sulking rather than unwell.

I don’t believe any of you saw the Buzzard take a Squirrel off of the new feeding tray David made this morning. We had hoped that the Squirrels would not be able to get onto the new tray, but they found a way. Unfortunately one paid the price, and its cries were not very pleasant to hear. David has put a wooden baffle under the tray, that we had hoped would stop the Squirrels from getting on to the tray this time. But that has not worked, by the time we got back to watch on the webcam the Squirrel had perched its self on the baffle and was happily eating. That’s it, cant waste any more time the Squirrels can get on with it.

Hi All

At 7.30 am this morning the female osprey arrived back at Loch of the Lowes. She is looking in really good shape for a bird that has just flown 3000 miles from west Africa. This year is the 40th anniversary of the reserve and the return of the osprey to Perthshire. What better way to celebrate this milestone than with our female who has been breeding at Loch of the Lowes since 1991. Hopefully within the next week we will see her partner return from Africa .

We are all very excited as we all had our reservation about her return. She is now well into her twenties, a good age for an osprey. Lets hope she goes on to produce healthy chicks this season. Peter Lock of the Lowe’s.

Not only has the Locks Osprey returned. When I spoke to Peter At Indian River Bay, Delaware one of his Osprey returned yesterday. Peter is reopositioning his camera today. Hopefully that will be up and running, maybe even today.

We have found the missing Female Reindeer that was frightened by the Helicopter. She is in the Woods behind the Reindeer Field not looking to happy. We have tried to coax her back into the Field but she is not ready yet. We are sure that she will go back in her own time. We would have trouble trying to catch her. If we were unsuccessful chances are that she will go further away. As with the one that returned shortly after the incident she is also scouring. Not good when they are only a month or so from Calving. Too much stress could easily cause them to abort.

I took this up the stables last Saturday, up one of the Lanes. When they all open up its a beautiful sight I will get to take another photo and send it in when they all come out. Karen Stoke

This was a sunny corner of our pond today(19/03/09)Rose W’canton

A Helicopter that was checking the power line close to the Farm decided instead of following the power line route it would circle over the Farm. It was so low that it caused the Horses that were quite close to the line to panic. By circling the Farm it went over the Reindeer Field that also caused the Reindeer to panic, making two of them to run straight through the Hedge. One has returned but would not eat when I took their food up to the Field for them. The other one has still not returned.

This is not the first time that the Electricity Companies Helicopters have caused this type of problem. It happened a month ago. I was assured when I complained by the Pilot that our post code would be logged that would stop any recurrence. Quite obviously that didn’t work. The Pilot that I spoke too today told me that the was a computer glitch that was being sorted out today, It had caused all the no fly areas not to be found on their computers.

When we had Ostrich we had the same problem. Unfortunately one of our Female Ostrich ran into a post and killed herself. The other Female Ostriches did not lay for nearly three months after that incident. Again we were assured that the Helicopters would never fly above the Farm.

Vicky’s boy friend David came down to join her on her stay at Denbury yesterday. He has made a new tray for the bird feeders that kept on falling to one side. It is a bit more secure now that he has fitted it than my one was. He has also made a new obstacle for the Squirrel obstacle course

My Daughter emailed me this delightful selection of photos. Isn`t he just adorable i have not seen a Hedgehog for many many years. Karen Stoke.

I thought that you would be interested in this update of the US Virgin Islands webcam. Michael was my first Contact on the Islands. Paul is the Managing Director of the St. Croix Environmental Association, who wants to get on with this project. As you can see by his email, if this project goes well we should be doing other Virgin Island webcams. Hopefully one on Turtles.

I just spoke with Michael Hartlage. He is returning to St. Croix from Atlanta tomorrow and we will get together Thursday. He has finished the drawing that we need to submit to the VI Port Authority for formal approval of the installation of the webcam on a dolphin mooring immediately south of the Frederiksted Pier.

I will write a letter to the VI Port Authority and VI Department of Tourism to gain final approvals.

Thank you for your commitment to this project. Once the webcam begins broadcasting images, I know there will be interest locating cameras at additional sites in the USVI. Yours, Paul

I was looking through some pictures the other day and found these.

This was taken at Culloden Moor, site of the Battle of Culloden in April 1746. As that’s the Government Army Line, are those “Government Mole” Hills behind it!!??

Loch Ness in January – bleak but lovely!

Cromarty Firth – it’s where they take Oil Rigs for servicing, but it’s quite a sight to see so many in such a small area!

Loch Ness – still January but looking a bit brighter!

This photo was taken as the very last Concorde flew into Filton, Bristol where it has remained ever since. This was probably about ten minutes before it reached it’s final destination. Julia.

I shouldn’t think that any of you saw the Geese being chased off of the Lake this morning. A pair flew on the Lake last evening. I thought that it was the regular pair. As it happened they were not. The regular pair flew in this morning just as I was turning the cameras over. They didn’t hesitate and without landing properly flew menacing straight at the intruders. They didn’t hang about leaving and it was all over within second.

Thornton went missing last evening. With the help of our Holiday guests we eventually found him looking quite unwell and not bothering about any thing. This morning he was none the better. I thought that it was a recurrence of the problem that he had a little while back. He moped about for most of the morning, every now and then getting back to his old self. Obviously nothing to serious. On thinking back I don’t think that he was ill at all. Vicky, Diane and John came for two weeks on Saturday. ~Thornton was pleased to see then, unfortunately Thornton showing them he was pleased wasn’t appreciated as he was giving them little head butts. The only way to stop him was to very slightly tap him with a stick. I reckon that he thought that he was being chased off and got in a Sheep’s way upset. It didn’t help as Diane had not remembered to bring a ginger nuts with her.

Two more pics of my Amaryllis – Jill.

Reindeer. The first photograph is of Reindeer Cows in Sweden before their journey to the UK. The second was when they arrived in the UK. Unfortunately the white one is not for sale.

Photo of the Pine Marten I took the other night. Picture not very good as it was taken from the computer. It was lovely to see. Merrilyn.

I take it no one saw the three Roe Deer in the Valley last night. I put them on all of the Denbury Farm webcam pages. The Deer have been feeding in the Valley for the past four days at least. I could not tell if they were male or female. If they are female they will give birth in about six to eight weeks time. Although they are more than likely to be young males.

Not to sure what the Geese are up to. They are returning to the Lake early in the morning. Some times as early as 4.30am. I know because they wake me. They leave normally before 9.am Now and then they will inspect the Island before flying away. They had better make up their mind if they are going to nest on the Island before another pair do. A pair of Swans looked as if they might have landed on the Lake yesterday. They flew around in circles above the Lake a few time but decided not to land. Every time we have had Swans land on the Lake there have been Geese on as well who chase the Swans off. As much as I like the Geese it would be good for Swans to nest. There would also be a greater chance of Cygnet surviving with the aggressions Swans show when threatened.

When we were at Denbury in February, I had a little chat with Arnie, Smuggler, Thornton and a Reindeer and they all agreed that if I made a small donation to Comic Relief, they would allow themselves to be photographed with Red Noses!
I hope you don’t mind! Julia.
P.S. Should the Reindeer be named Rudolfa?

Julia, you missed with the Reindeer.
