Poor Ewy is a little lost now that Willow and Gypsy are now stabled. She will normally eat with one or the other when we put the feed out in the Horse Field. I believe Vicky sent in a photograph of Ewy eating with one of the Horses. Arnie, Lady and Emmi are turnout in the days. When they come in for their feed, Ewy runs part of the way in with them but she is to frightened to come all the way. She may decide to return with the other Sheep. She has been getting a lot closer than in the past. If I could catch her I would put her in with the Fillies as she is quite old and the feed that she gets with the Fillies will help her survive the Winter if it turns really bad.

Below is an email that I received from Michael in the US Virgin Island in reply to an email I sent him this morning. It will keep you up to date with the underwater webcam that we are hoping to broadcast with. It is going on a bit and I am disappointed that it is not up and running.

Sorry I didn’t respond to your last email but I did not receive an email
from you. Could you have possibly sent it using another account? I never
check junk mail, it is automatically deleted.

Regardless, here is the status of the placement of the webcam. Everything
is still a go but getting one additional agency’s approval is now necessary.
I had zero knowledge that Fish and Wildlife had any input and was broadsided
by the news. The delay is that the official approval cannot be obtained
until their next meeting, Jan 14th. Upon learning of the additional
requirement, the sponsor providing the battery has held back and will not
release the battery until final approval is granted, which is 90% guaranteed
on the 14th.

After everything is in place, we are looking at a February installation date
due to Homeland Security issues. The month of January brings 11 Cruise
ships to the mounting area. Because the areas are “swept” by divers very
often before a ship visit, we will have to wait until February when the
number of visits slows to 3.

I’m trying my best to get this up and running for your, mine and the world’s
enjoyment. There are just stumbles along the way in every first time
endeavor. Sorry for the delay.

With regards,

Michael

Karen asked about the Turtle Camera. Once the underwater camera is working a decision will be made about the Turtle Camera. It is taking a long time for the underwater camera to get going. I had hoped for it to be working by now, although the last email I received from Michael, my contact in the Virgin Islands was received on the 2nd of October. I believe that I put it on the Diary back a while. Any way here it is again.

Sorry I have been so out of touch but this has been a very busy hurricane and remodeling season for me. I have a kitchen and pool remodel that I am overseeing as well as re painting the Main house and to boot, I have had three surgical procedures in the last two months! Busy!

As for a status update… Everything is a go, just taking more time than I would have ever guessed. We have the necessary approvals and the underwater security holder has been constructed, the solar power set up and gel battery are the only hold ups. Waiting on the panel I am told as well as the gel style battery since it will be in a marine environment and we don’t want to risk contaminating the water with an acid spill. Worst case scenario is the cam will be up and running in December. I am truly hoping for November. With regards, Michael.

I also need to get a new camera over to Peter at Indian River Bay in Delaware USA, for the coming Osprey Season. If you remember Peters House overlooks the Osprey nest that is only a hundred metres or so from his house. We are going to send Peter a PTZ camera that he will install on his balcony. He will then be able to zoom in very close into the nest, as well as the Lake also in front of his house and hopefully to see other Birds of Prey in the area. If I remember correctly the Bold Eagle, Brown Eagle that Peter tells me is quite rare and another species that I forget the name of.

Starting from number eleven there are five new photographs on…

Starting from number eleven there are five new photographs on the Photo page, all sent in by Liz. North Yorkshire. There will be five from Elaine tomorrow.

The Goldfinch was taken on the feeder in the front garden.

The blackbird is one of an army of birds that come for their daily servings of sultanas.

Greenfinch on the feeder.

The remaining 2 shots are of the back garden, the plant on its own is a Dicentra spectablis (Bleeding Heart). I have planted a few fruit trees and bushes, but so far have not had any fruit from any as the birds always get there first!!! Oh well that’s life as they say lol Liz North Yorkshire.

As you may have noticed the Gosling disappeared last night. I spoke to soon in last nights Diary. They disappeared in such a small space of time I find it hard to believe that two of then went at the same time. I had fed them just before I had fed the Badgers and returned to the Lake at about 9.25 pm with a new battery for the electric fencer. The Battery had very little life in it so I would use the battery from our lawn mower. At about 10.20pm I went to change the battery over. I checked the Lake webcam, the Goose and Goslings were making their way to the fenced area but turned away. I went to the lawn mower to remove the battery that is on the way to the Lake. Whilst moving the Battery I heard the Goose start to call, it was no longer than 10 minutes after I had seen the three on the webcam probably less. When I got to the Lake a minute or so later the Goslings had gone.

Later I checked the recording device that I had put on to record the Badger Cubs if they had shown their selves. All camera record at once, so I was able to look back at the two lake cameras. The last that I saw of the Goslings was as they were making their way to the right hand side of the Lake, away from the fenced area. It was strange that the two disappeared. If they had got taken or were frightened and fell into the stream and got wash away I really don’t know. There are no sign around the Lake of any remains of the Goslings. I had hoped with the way that the Goslings were growing that this year we may have seen them fly off of the Lake. We tried all we could to keep them alive this year, but it has been a disaster for the Geese. Only the Goose has survived, all five Goslings gone and the Gander. I will stop any Geese from breding in future years. I should have this year. The Goose will stay on the Lake for a day or so and will fly off.

There are three new photographs on the Photo page starting…

There are three new photographs on the Photo page, starting from number one.

We have only been able to put three photographs on the Photo page tonight. We have only got a few photographs left, other than ones that have been sent in by the same people, but different poses.

Bluebells in my garden. Lindsay.

Here is a picture of Schumi our rabbit who died last year, she is about to have a nibble of the wallpaper, she was a little ****** for doing that. Val

This morning as I was leaving for work there was a flock of Ibis across the street feeding. They have long skinny beaks looking for insects. There were about 20 of them. We also have a pair of nesting Ospreys a couple of streets in back of us. I’m trying to get pictures of them to send. Karen, Florida (USA)

4x photographs from Simon. two of the Chick and two of the location. The white dot shows the spot.

There is better news from Anderlucia and the Griffon Vulture webcam. I had another site in mind for the equipment that I had sent Simon. Last week I told Simon that the location seemed to be giving problems and that I would be able top use the equipment that he had. I received the email below this morning.

I have a new site the camera is in it, it will be attached to the cables soon, so please read this email look at the images attached, and just try to realise what I am up against. Also I did not do all this dangerous climbing to view nothing. Secondly I told you I would look for another site which is what I have been doing in every second of my spare time. I found one yesterday and it is on a ledge higher and further back on another face along the chain than the other one and just as dangerous to reach but I managed to climb in. The ledge contains 2 nests one with an egg and 6 ft away another nest with a chick in it, ( image attached ) This location as you will see from the 4 jpgs I have attached is in a somewhat serious location. I CLIMBED FROM TOP TO BOTTOM TWICE, plus I had to get the camera and battery from the old location up there, so just imagine the weight of the battery in my pack add to that the 80 degree plus heat and the extreme difficulty of the rock and loose shit that makes up this mountain, and you can imagine what I am up against. The camera is in the nest, the battery is 50 to 60 ft below, now I am going t wait until I AM 100% CERTAIN that both sets of adults return to the nest before I go anywhere near it. All of the cable is up there near the battery and all that remains is to get the panel across and hook it up. Gerry does not have a problem with the computer being on if there is something to see. I told you this was possible and I have not busted my XXXXX and nearly killed myself to give up and send all this gear back now. As I said we are not dealing with nesting boxes on the side of an Oak tree, badger sets, Ospreys on handy little platforms in someones garden, this is as hard as it gets. We lost the other site because of a lack of patience, I am not going to make the same mistake again, surely you can understand that. The weather was xxxx for over a week and it was impossible to get up there. I appreciate you have another use for the gear in Scotland but after all the ball breaking work my end I think it fair that this little project is seen through to its conclusion. Just let me go at my pace and all will be well. Have a look at the jpegs and you will see why it takes time. Gerry will call me later today and let me know about the nest activity with regards to the adults coming and going, I will check again in the coming days, and then I can climb up hook it up and we are in business. The welfare of these birds is paramount, so please be patient and all will be well. I will let know when the gear is hooked up. Kind regards. Simon

There are five new photographs on the Photo page, starting from number eleven. I am sure that there must be some good photographers who have not yet sent any photographs in for the Photo page.

I thought that you may like to see a couple of emails from Simon in Anderlucia, who is installing the camera for the Griffon Vulture webcam.

Hi, I climbed today with matt but we could not get the camera in the spot we wanted, simple reason, it was the last 6ft that we could not get across, the limestone is all fractured and loose and all 3 of the safety anchors we put in would fail under any pressure from a fall, we could not go any further. We decided to move away from the nest across the face and slightly above which is where we put the bracket I made for the camera, it is the only option. We fixed safety lines for me as I have to return tomorrow and place the camera to the bracket, and drop the power and signal cable down the face to the panel and battery which I also have to carry up tomorrow. I shall get Nyhal the computer man up there the day after to sit in Gerrys house and check the focus while I am at the camera. There may be a small and I stress SMALL chance I can work my way a few metres closer to the nest once it is up and running but we shall think about that later there is plenty of time, the chick is stuck there for months, I shall obviously set the focus to be as sharp as possible but for now the distance to the nest is what it is, so we shall see the result very soon. I have had a heavy cold for 5 days I have no voice and a blocked nose and today was dangerous hard work, ontop of that I am sunburnt and scratched to xxxx from thorns and stinging nettles so , I am out of contact and in bed until sunrise tomorow. I will e,mail you tomorrow night and confirm all the wires have been connected to the to the panel and battery etc etc. Nyhal will then help as I said before and then it will be up and running.
Cheers. Simon.

Hi. I hauled up the battery and panel yesterday and connected the wires. My computer guy is coming with me tomorrow to sit at the computeer while I climb up and set the focus. I will email you from Gerrys house when it is done. We could not pre set the focus because we had no idea where the camera was going to be and yesterday the computer guy was not available so tomorrow it is. Just so as you know Matt and I spent 7 hours climbing 5 of those hanging on ropes from a vertical face, and yesterday was 4 hours alone on the face, over 80 degrees farenheit, with no shade, threading the cable to the panel and battery. The face is full of thorns and vegetation so you cant throw the cable or it would be snagged in a hundred places. Cheers Simon.

I am not putting any new photographs on today as…

I am not putting any new photographs on today as the page at the moment will only allow for ten at a time. Many more will only cause the page to open slowly, when you try to access it. The option would be to reduce the size of the photographs on the page, but I would think that it is better to see the photographs as they are. I will replace some over the next couple of days.

I am still doing the remote control Duck to put on the lake. With going away to France and other work, I have not had a lot of time to be making it. The first one that I started I did wrong, the second one didn’t go to well either. I had put in the engine and steering, on testing it in water, to make sure that there were no leeks, it started to fill up with water. I refitted all the parts again, making sure that it was water tight, but still water poured in. It turned out that I had wasted my time redoing it as the water was coming in some where else, that took me about three seconds to stop. It wont take to much longer to finish getting it motorised. I can the start to fit the camera. That is not going to be that easy. The other problem that I could get is that the parts that I am fitting may be to heavy, causing the Duck to sink. The battery that I have got for the Duck has got to control the electric engine, the camera with IR lamp and the wireless connection. It is very small but quite heavy. I am hoping that the Duck will be able to go for up to half an hour at a time, with every thing working. So the battery is going to be the biggest problem. I made need to fix some shaped buoyancy under the Duck to keep it from sinking. The best material would be cork. Cant imagine were they sell that now. The other option could be another duck in tow, being attached by an umbilical cord between the two, and put the battery in the towed duck. Why did I give myself the problem?

We were woken very early this morning, with what sounded like banging from around the Farm Yard. I went and had a quick look, but there was nothing to be seen. We put it down to Branston knocking into, or knocking down something in the yard. At about lunch time I went into our dining room to find a very sooty Dove. It had obviously fell down the chimney and that was the noise that had woken us earlier on. The chimney is for a very large inglenook fireplace. We put a liner chimney in it when we first moved to Denbury, for a wood burner. We moved the wood burner to a different room but left the liner in, so the dove fell down a very long small pipe. We have had a few smaller birds fall down the chimney, but the Dove was the largest. It made a fair bit of mess for the short time that it was in the dining room.

I have been watching the camera in the small Barn where I saw the Stoat or Weasel a few weeks back. I have seen a few Mice and a couple of Rats, but that is all. I have been recording a lot of footage of the webcams. When I get time I will check the recording and see what I get on it.
