Emmi and Sox will be returning to Denbury by the end of the week. Emmi went to the Stallion yesterday and all went well. In three weeks we will have her scanned by the Veterinary to make sure that she is in Foal.

Our Mare in Ireland also went to a Stallion yesterday. Unfortunately she did not take to our first choice Stallion, although she was covered by him three times. If she does not get into Foal by the second choice Stallion I will not put her in Foal this year and leave her until early next year.

Checking back on the Diary, Lady is due to Foal in three weeks time. I will be leaving her camera on every night from next week. For the past two years she has been very late Foaling. I think she was getting on for a month late last year. I know that I was keeping watch every night for about two months. I wont be wanting that this year. With a bit of luck she may be early.

Thank you for all of your suggestion for the naming of Emmi’s Colt Foal. We have thought about what we would like, and although there were a lot of suggestions you sent in that we did like, the more we looked at him and his leg markings, we could not give call him Sox. The four white markings on his legs are in fact known as stockings, but we couldn’t really call him Nora Batty. Socks on a Horse, go to the first joint from the foot. The first joint being known as the Fetlock. Stockings go to the knee that Sox has.

Sox is very well marked Foal with four Stockings and a Blaze on the front of his face. Stockings on Horses do tend to make them stand out. Emmi has got two stockings and a sock. You may have seen how friendly Sox is in the stable. As far as he is concerned every person is his friend. He goes up to every one to greet them and he lets you know if you don’t give him the attention that he expects, by pushing you with his head. He is a happy Foal for ever bouncing and skipping about. The sooner Lady Foals and he has another Foal to run with the happier we are sure he will be.

I spoke a couple of days ago to the Stud in Ireland that we have our Horse at, that we are hoping to get in Foal. She has been to the Stallion twice. As of yet the mating has not been successful. She is going back to the same Stallion again this week and we can only wait again. Every thing is happening as it should. There doesn’t seem any problem with the Mare and the Stallion has already shown that he is fertile by getting other Mares in Foal this season. Now and then a Mare and Stallion don’t manage to produce a Foal. You put the Mare to another Stallion and they go straight into Foal. I will be disappointed if we don’t get a Foal from the Stallion that we have chosen as our Mares Sire and the Stallion we have chosen has produced Group three winner. We have started to look for another Stallion that she could go to if the mating is not successful this time.

Bliss and Misty.

LINTON FALLS. Lynne.

The first two photographs on today’s Photo page were sent to me by Bliss and Misty’s Trainer in France. He is pleased with the way that the two Fillies are progressing. On speaking to him he has told me that if they keep progressing as they are, they could have their first race in June. I reckon that they look very good. Let hope they run as good as they look.

Unfortunately for a change the weathermen got the forecast right. We were woken just before 3.am by the wind forcing the rain onto the window. The wind was shaking the windows of the Farm House so fiercely that we thought that they may break. It carried on for a good two hours and then became a lot less windy. When we got up to feed the animals it was still quite calm. By 9.30am the wind started to blow up again. Not as bad as it was in the night but still quite fierce. It was to wet and cold to let the Foal out today, and it doesn’t look as if it going to be a any better tonight or tomorrow.

The camera has turned up for the remote controlled Duck, hopefully Jack will get time to finish it during the week and post it back to me. If we get it back in time for the weekend, I will try it out on the lake.

I had a little fright this afternoon, when I looked at the Foal on the webcam. Emmi was pawing the Foal as if she was trying to get it to get to its feet. The Foal was taking no notice, of even making the slightest of movement. The way it was lying didn’t help. It was tight to the wall, bum in the air and head into the stable bed. I really thought that it may have died. Even when I got to the stable and touched the Foal it didn’t stir until I lifted its head. It has started to have a little nose into Emmi’s feed bucket. It is surprising how quick that they do join in with eating the feed. We have to start thinking about giving the Foal a stable name. Send in a few of you suggestions to the Forum.

We now also need to think about what Stallion we are going to send Emmi to this year. I don’t really like ending the Horses on long journeys to the Studs. We don’t have a very large choice in the West Country. The Stud we sent Lady and Woody to has closed, their better Stallion have been taken back to Ireland. There are a couple of Stallion fairly close by, within a couple of hours travelling time that I may consider sending Emmi to. With Lady it is going to be a problem. Her breeding really warrants a good Stallion, but there is nothing close by that would be suitable for her.

For the past two night I have shown the lower Badger Sett entrance feeding site. When it is zoomed in at the back you are able to see on the right hand side, one of the sett entrance and exit holes. You may have seen the black and white photograph of a Badger coming out of the hole that I put on the Photo page a little while back. This place was the first that I had ever put a camera up to try to see the Badgers. We didn’t see many Badgers, as at the time. The Sett only had three Badger living in it. The other reason was that it was not the main entrance and exit hole, that at the time was well hidden. I only found it by chance, when I thought that I had broken my leg after as it disappeared down a hole very close the main entrance, that I first visit when I feed. The little field that it is in, would now be too dangerous to put the Horses into, as there are to many Badger excavations, that their legs could go down into. last year when I was putting in a wire for the camera that faces the main Sett entrance, there were so many holes that it has made it quite dangerous for me to walk about. Ever few steps that I made by the hedge, one of my legs would find a hole. We leave the field un-grazed or cut to encourage the Voles, in the hope that a Barn Owl will start feeding and eventually find one of our nest boxes.

Our Mare in Ireland, that went to the Stud to be covered by the Stallion, did not get in Foal. It was probably a good thing, for she could well have had the Foal in December, making it a yearling, only a few days later. She was put to the Stallion again If that covering puts her in Foal, the foal would be due on the 24th of January next year. There will then be a very little chance of a December Foal. The covering of our Mare was the first that the Stallion had for this year and it would not be unusual for the covering to be unsuccessful. I would be disappointed if this covering does not take. We will know on the 10th of March one way or the other. I purchased the Mare without seeing her or knowing very little about her, other than she is a very dark bay, and that she had won one race, so when I spoke to the Stud today I asked them for an opinion on her. It seems that my purchase was very good. She was described to me as being a very good type, getting on for 16hh. and If we are successful in her getting her in Foal to the Stallion, it should produce an excellent Foal. The Stallion had its first runners last year. 48% of those that run won their races. This is an excellent strike rate. Even better, one of the winners won a Group 3 Race, the Dam of the winner being by a Stallion called Royal Academy. the same Sire as our Mare. So as you can imagine I am hoping.

For a few days we have moved Lady back to her original stable, so that Willow can start to get use to Lady not being in the next to her. Emmi is next to Willow and Gypsy. I would rather Emmi be in Lady’s stable as the camera is not in a very good position to watch her. Willow panicked a little. She soon settled down with Gypsy being in with her. We would have had a lot more problems if we hadn’t had Gypsy for Willow to be with, after Woody not having a Foal. Again Lady has not been at all bothered.

The weather has been so good, with a warm Sun that we were able to take the Horses rugs off for the whole day. They are taken off every couple of days when they are given a quick brush over and then put on as it has been cold. With the rugs being off for most of the day it tends to make us take more notice of their condition. Emmi is very big with Lady not far behind in size. Looking at them you wonder just how big the Foal they are carrying will be. If we stand by the Mares we can very often see their bellies moving when the Foal’s move about inside them.

The young Mare that we left in Ireland when we got Emmi and Gypsy, should be going to the Stallion from the end of next week. If she is covered successfully we will get a early Foal in 2009. We have got to hope that she does not Foal in 2008. I would not have taken the chance of mating an older Mare this early in the season, but Maidens are normally a week or two late on their Foaling date. We are using a Stallion called Clodovil that is very popular at the moment. Our Mares Sire was a Horse called Royal Academy. A Clodovil and Royal Academy have been successful match in the past, so with a bit of luck we may get it right. The Mare will be scanned to see if she is in Foal after about twenty one days, if she is she will be coming to Denbury, If not she will go back to the Stallion.

As requested, herewith three photos of my front garden, two summer and one winter. Pat.

I checked of the Ewe’s today to see if there were any signs that they were due to Lamb. None of their udders showed any signs of producing milk. As I let the Ram run with the Ewe’s all year, it is difficult for me to tell when they will Lamb. Sheep Farmer would know within a day or two when their Ewes were due to Lamb. Most Farmers will only introduce the Rams to the Ewes from October on. With a gestation period of 148 days, giving a day or so either way, they would know nearly to the day when their Ewes would Lamb.

When the Rams are introduced to the Ewes, called Tupping, most will have fitted a harness, with a crayon type marker attached under their chest. When the Ewes come into season, the crayon marker will leave a coloured mark on the Ewes back after the Ram has covered them. You have probally seen Ewes with the marks. 148 days from then is about when the Lambs should drop. Pity I wasn’t so organised. The ideal time to lamb is in the spring when the new grass is growing. Some Farmers lamb early. One not far from Denbury, Lamb around Christmas time. I will keep checking the Ewes and let you know if there are any signs of them Lambing. I have an Electrician coming on Monday to tidy up the barns wiring, and to put a couple of new points in. When he has finished I will put the infra red lamp in the barn.

We have been looking at the options of a Stallion to use on the Maiden Filly that we purchased when we bought Emmi and Gypsy a month ago. We have left the Filly in Ireland as we were going to use the Stallion Generous on her. It is what Lady is now in Foal to. Generous was last year at Stud only an hour away from Denbury. It seems that the Stud wasn’t making any money, and has closed. The Stallions including Generous being taken to Ireland.

Every year we receive a Stallion Book from Weatherby’s, giving all the details of all the Stallions available, with all their statistics. You can access it on line. I liked the look of a Stallion called Clodovil, when I phoned the Stud he was fully booked, with a waiting list of over forty. Yesterday I received the paperwork for Emmi, by chance she had belonged to the Stud that Clodovil is standing. As there was a piece of the paperwork missing, I phoned the Stud and was fortunate to have spoken to the Owner. I enquired of what chance I had of a covering of Clodovil. As long as it was an early covering he would be able to arrange it. The Filly will be prepared and hopefully be covered in the middle of February. Looking at the fillies Pedigree it will be a good match.

I looked at the BBC weather forecast on the television this afternoon, about 2.30pm, to make a decision if I was turning the Horses out after their evening feed. The forecast with animation, so I didn’t get it wrong, was dry with a chance of a little rain. Since 4.15pm it has poured down. I was going to turn the Horses out at 4.pm but I could see that it was liable to rain, so the Horses were bedded down in their stables. Both yesterday and today the forecast has been seriously wrong within a couple of hours of it being given. Even with rugs on, the wet with cold is not good for Thoroughbred Horses to be out in.

I first met Lady and Woody when they belonged to…

I first met Lady and Woody when they belonged to one of our tenants who occupied one of our cottages on the farm. When he came to live on the farm he introduced himself as a Bloodstock Agent. He was not, he had a much less savory occupation, the income from that occupation allowed him to purchase a number of Horses including Lady and Woody.

Buy luck, and I promise you not by judgement, he purchased Lady, who real name is Sprite and Woody(Woodland Garden) from Bloodstock Auctions. A previous owner of Lady (Sprite) was Lord Carnarvon the son of the Lord Carnarvon, who with Howard Carter discovered the Tomb of the Egyptian Pharaoh King Tutankhamun. She is a top quality mare. Woody is also a quality mare, one of her earlier foals sold for in access of
