I must try to find the time to get the Buzzards hunting in the Valley on the webcam. To be honest I haven’t looked this year to see where they were hunting. It was only this afternoon when I gave a ride to a young Lad that I realised that they were hunting the Valley. There were five above the edge of the Wood on the right hand side. I cant imagine that the five were part of the same family. I have rarely seen more than one youngster with the parents. Once I have seen two, but never three.

In the years we have been at Denbury up to two ago the Buzzards would nest in the Woods at the far end of the Valley. In the months of July and August I would often sit and watch the parent birds hovering above and hunting from one end of the Valley to the other for rabbits for the youngster’s. Two years ago the Buzzards nested in the Woods quite close to the Farm House. Then we would only see them hovering above. With them hunting the Valley they may have started to nest in there old areas again.

I spoke to the person who will be installing the new webcam camera in the secret location yesterday. He hopes to be able to get it going next week.

Goslings and Geese on the lake. Vicky.

Ladybird in the Valley. Vicky.

Butterfly in the Valley. Vicky.

Small Magpie moth that came in our cottage. Vicky.

Yellow Brimstone Moth that came in our cottage. Vicky.

I was speaking to Peter at Indian River Bay Delaware last evening about his Osprey webcam. The Ospreys laid there eggs but they did not hatch this year. He is not sure why. I didn’t realise until last evening that along the stretch of the River where Peter lives there are at least fifteen Osprey nests. I am sending out a new PTZ camera this week so that we can see the other wildlife on the River through the Winter.

As a few of you mentioned on the Forum yesterday about the Bird on the post yesterday morning. It was a Buzzard hunting in the Valley. I should think that it was an adult. With the weather as it has been for the past few weeks, we have been unable to cut the grass to make our hay, so it is standing very tall. Every time the Buzzard went down into the grass after its prey it was coming back to the post with clumps of grass.

A Tawney Owl was on the Horse jump at the Badger feeding area last night. It was there for a long time. A rat walked right below the Owl. Although it was watching the rat it didn’t try to catch it.

I managed to find the time to put a webcam on another Swallows nest today. It is a different nest with different adults. The nest had eggs in it whilst the first Swallow were still in their nest. There are two other nests in the building that the nest are in. One with older chicks and the other with eggs. I have taken the the camera from the Dove nest. As soon as there are no Swallows nesting I will show the whole of a Dove nesting from the start when the eggs are first laid.

I hope more of you than Janice (Leeds) saw the Red Deer Hind with Twin Calves on the Valley Camera last night. We very rarely see Calve at all, so seeing twins was a first even for us. The images were not that good. It was only for a short time that we managed to see the three in the full infra-red light. The long grass didn’t help either. Once out of the full infra-red light the images wee poor.

Unfortunately we found a dead Hind in the Valley. Worse still laying with her was a dead Calf. I knew there was something dead just under the trees on the left hand side Wood as there was a Fox hanging around the area. Some thing always seemed to delay me when I went to go and see what it was. It was only on Thursday evening that Diane, Vicky and family went there for me. It was to late to see what had caused the Hind to die. Although I am concerned that it may have been shot by a nearby Farmer who had found it on his crop and the wounded Deer fell in our Field in the Valley.

I don’t mind sarcastic remarks on the Forum as long as they are signed. Who ever it was please let me know who you are and I will approve your entry. It is remarks like you made that make me wonder why I bother to continue with the website. I spend to much time, effort and money keeping this website running, to have to worry about what people think of any decisions I may make. It could well be a disappointed owner, a little sore that the sale didnt happen.

I had not checked when the Goslings were going to hatch. By the way that the Goose was looking around this morning I thought that there was a fair chance that the eggs had hatched. We have done as much as we can to protect the Goslings and our Fish. I will check every night that the electric fence is working, and hope that all that has been done will stop any predators.

As I was going to feed the Badger last night I saw four Red Deer cross from the Stream into the direction of the Wood on the left hand side. When I got back to the Farm House I turned my private view on, but they were just disappearing into the Wood. To late to put them on to the webcam. Twice over the evening there were two single Roe Deer eating by the side of the Stream. There seems to be more Deer visiting the Valley. It could only have been the Cows and the Electric fencing that stopped them from visiting last year as much as they normally did. I will put the Valley Camera on after the Badgers have eaten all of their food on webcamn 2.

Two more pics of my Amaryllis – Jill.

Reindeer. The first photograph is of Reindeer Cows in Sweden before their journey to the UK. The second was when they arrived in the UK. Unfortunately the white one is not for sale.

Photo of the Pine Marten I took the other night. Picture not very good as it was taken from the computer. It was lovely to see. Merrilyn.

I take it no one saw the three Roe Deer in the Valley last night. I put them on all of the Denbury Farm webcam pages. The Deer have been feeding in the Valley for the past four days at least. I could not tell if they were male or female. If they are female they will give birth in about six to eight weeks time. Although they are more than likely to be young males.

Not to sure what the Geese are up to. They are returning to the Lake early in the morning. Some times as early as 4.30am. I know because they wake me. They leave normally before 9.am Now and then they will inspect the Island before flying away. They had better make up their mind if they are going to nest on the Island before another pair do. A pair of Swans looked as if they might have landed on the Lake yesterday. They flew around in circles above the Lake a few time but decided not to land. Every time we have had Swans land on the Lake there have been Geese on as well who chase the Swans off. As much as I like the Geese it would be good for Swans to nest. There would also be a greater chance of Cygnet surviving with the aggressions Swans show when threatened.

Blackpool in March past, not many people about, but luckily these fellows were around to clean up after them. Dirty beggers.
It was a case of first come first served!! And they all seemed to have a (?) dinner. Pam Cleveleys.

I counted five Roe Deer in the Valley on Friday night. I must admit I was pleased to see them. Since I changed the camera over last year we don’t have a lot of movement on the infra-red, lamps so chances are we are missing quite a few at far end of the Valley. We have some different lamps to put up but I cant seem to find the time to do the job.

The snow has done damage to an Oak Tree that is in the Horse Field. I only noticed it yesterday when I was breaking up last years Horse droppings with part of an old set of harrow dragging around the Field. The Oak must be many hundreds of years old and not looking its best with a hollow in the front and most of the inside gone, but it is alive. Two of its largest limbs have partially broken away and will need to be cut off and treated to stop any rot from getting in to the remaining parts of the limb. Once the work is done it should keep going for many more years. I have been saying to myself since we came to Denbury that I must see if I can find a sapling that it has produced. There is a good chance that there will be one in the Wood just a few yards behind the Oak. If I hurry up and find one before it start budding up I should be able to plant it close the the old Oak so that it will carry on.

A few more pictures of Oxford if you would like them, I expect you will be over-whelmed with snow pictures now!

1/ St Michael at the North Gate, this Saxon tower used to form part of the old City wall believed to be the oldest building in Oxford CH

2/ The memorial commemorates the “Oxford Martyrs,” Anglican bishops Hugh Latimer and Nicholas Ridley and the Archbishop of Canterbury Thomas Cranmer, who were executed in Oxford on the orders of Queen Mary Tudor. CH

5/ After a walk around Oxford taking pictures it’s into the Royal Blenheim for a couple of pints. CH

Checking the Valley on the webcam yesterday I could see what looked like a fallen tree that seemed to be blocking the the path that leads into the gap at the far end on the left hand side. As I had not had the time to inspect for any damage that the snow had caused I decided to have a quick look before I fed the Badgers.

Two trees had fallen onto the path. Both were Ash and had been caused to fall by the weight of the snow that had formed on the Ivy. One of the trees was very large and was part of group that had grown attached to each other. The tree had some rot in the base and would have died within a few years. I should think the others will have the rot and will also die or fall with the wind or snow.

Through the gap into the part of the valley that you cannot see, leads to another part of Ash Wood where another very large Ash has also fallen, not so much fallen as snapped off at the base, again snow had form on the Ivy the weight being to heavy for the tree to bare. This tree was in good condition before it fell. There were other trees in this area that were down. I cant remember if they were down before the snow. As soon as it is easier to walk through the snow to get to the Wood I will I will see if there is any other damage.

On the way back I saw a group four Roe Deer further in the Valley cross the foot path and on entering the Valley another Roe Deer ran in front of me. Any one watching the webcam would have seen it.

I was pleased that Julia saw and had managed to take a photograph of the Deer in the Valley yesterday. I was starting to think that they had deserted Denbury. Julia saw four. We changed the infra-red lamps when we put the new camera up. The original lamps had a longer beam that made it possible to see further along the Valley. We have two new lamps that when I manage to find the time I will put up. I will also need to put a another lamp further along the valley.

I heard the Geese flying over the Farm House this morning to land on the Lake at about 6.am. They will keep returning to make sure that it is safe. Last year a pair did the same but lost it when another pair landed one day and stayed claiming the Island very soon after. I will get to the Island to cut some of the grass back so that the Goose will be able to be seen sitting the nest.

Sorry that the Forum was not updated until this evening.

About midnight last night when I checked the webcams there was a Deer laying down by the stream in the Valley. The way it was laying down I could not be sure what type of Deer it was but i reckon it was a Roe Deer. It was the first Deer that I have seen on the webcams for a good few months. We can see that there are Deer visiting the Valley by their foot prints that we regularly see.

It or another Deer going by the Deer foot prints I found when I went to feed the Badger, had made its way to the gate in the background of the Badger feeding area. It may well have jumped the gate to where the Badgers feed. On a couple of occasions Deer were were seen at the Badger feeding area last year.

I see on the Forum that some of you have Snowdrops out. We have had them open for a week. What I want to see is the Daffodils out. They are a great site but better still we know that we are in Spring.
