These were taken out of my dining room window. The hornets were bald faced hornets, and they abandon the nest after the first freeze. We are going to take down the nest and give it to the Nature Center . The tree is a crab apple, and there were 5 squirrels in it at one time. Penny, Chicago Chicago Chicago.

I spoke to Peter at the Lock earlier today. Peter tells me that SWT would like us to host a webcam from Montrose Basin. The webcam will be installed on a raft at the basin where we will be able to see various Waders as well as other breeding Sea Birds. Common and Grey Seals also visit the Basin that hopefully we will also be able to watch. I will let you know more about it when I know myself.

Karen asked about the Turtle Camera. Once the underwater camera is working a decision will be made about the Turtle Camera. It is taking a long time for the underwater camera to get going. I had hoped for it to be working by now, although the last email I received from Michael, my contact in the Virgin Islands was received on the 2nd of October. I believe that I put it on the Diary back a while. Any way here it is again.

Sorry I have been so out of touch but this has been a very busy hurricane and remodeling season for me. I have a kitchen and pool remodel that I am overseeing as well as re painting the Main house and to boot, I have had three surgical procedures in the last two months! Busy!

As for a status update… Everything is a go, just taking more time than I would have ever guessed. We have the necessary approvals and the underwater security holder has been constructed, the solar power set up and gel battery are the only hold ups. Waiting on the panel I am told as well as the gel style battery since it will be in a marine environment and we don’t want to risk contaminating the water with an acid spill. Worst case scenario is the cam will be up and running in December. I am truly hoping for November. With regards, Michael.

I also need to get a new camera over to Peter at Indian River Bay in Delaware USA, for the coming Osprey Season. If you remember Peters House overlooks the Osprey nest that is only a hundred metres or so from his house. We are going to send Peter a PTZ camera that he will install on his balcony. He will then be able to zoom in very close into the nest, as well as the Lake also in front of his house and hopefully to see other Birds of Prey in the area. If I remember correctly the Bold Eagle, Brown Eagle that Peter tells me is quite rare and another species that I forget the name of.

Lots of great photographs have been sent in the past few days.

As you are short of photos ,thought you might be able to use these, they were taken in Hong Kong. They dry out every single bit of a fish, the smell was, well, different!!! Rose W’canton

I mentioned a while ago about my late cousin being an amateur photographer. Here are 3 of her photos I found will send some more in at a later date. sue.

Elsie sent this in.

The THREE BEARS story updated!

A far more accurate account of the events of that fateful morning…

Baby Bear goes downstairs, sits in his small chair at the table. He looks into his small bowl. It is empty. ‘Who’s been eating my porridge?!?’ he squeaks.

Daddy Bear arrives at the big table and sits in his big chair. He looks into his big bowl and it is also empty. ‘Who’s been eating my porridge?!?’ he roars.

Mummy Bear puts her head through the serving hatch
from the kitchen and yells,
‘For God’s sake, how many times do I have to go through this with you two idiots?’

She continues:

‘It was Mummy Bear who got up first.

It was Mummy Bear who woke everyone in the house.

It was Mummy Bear who made the coffee.

It was Mummy Bear who unloaded the dishwasher from last night and then put everything away.

It was Mummy Bear who swept the floor in the kitchen.

It was Mummy Bear who went out in the cold early morning air to fetch the newspaper and croissants.

It was Mummy Bear who set the damn table.’ She sighs, and continues:

‘It was Mummy Bear who walked the bloody dog, cleaned the damn cat’s litter tray, gave them both their food, and refilled their water.

‘And NOW that you’ve BOTH decided to drag your sorry bear-asses downstairs and grace Mummy Bear with your grumpy presence,
… listen carefully …
because I’m ONLY going to say this ONCE…

‘I HAVEN’T HAD THE TIME TO MAKE YOUR
******* PORRIDGE YET!!!’

We had a couple more days of photographs emailed to us today, but we still need more to be able to continue with the Photo Page.

These are a few pictures from the back-streets of Oxford, I have lived in Oxford all my life and used to think the place was a tip, but now I have a bit of time on my hands I have found there are still some very nice bits left that haven’t been developed. Clive.

Going by last night and today’s entries on the Forum no one, even the regulars saw the Buck Roe Deer in the Valley last night. It was by far the best nighttime picture that we have ever had of Wildlife in the Valley. I was pleased to see a Deer as I have only seen a few in the past few months. No where near the amount that we saw earlier this year and last or since we allowed the Cattle into the Valley.

Over the past few days we have also seen quite a lot of Deer foot prints in the Valley, again the first for a good while. With a bit of luck they are starting to return. Now that we have managed to get the Vally Camera working properly we will be able to see the Deer and any other Wildlife a lot better. We are waiting for a couple of new infra-red lamps that are going to be donated by the camera manufacturer. They will we hope light up the far end of the Valley as it use to be, if not better.

The Valley Fields are over ten acres. The best way to light it is to cover all directions of the Valley with individual infra-red lamps, but unfortunately that would be mega money. Now that the days are getting shorter it is important to try to see more night time Wildlife.

We managed to get David to put up another small addition to the Squirrel obstacle course. My idea of putting a tunnel on the first pole was not as good as I expected it to be. By what I have seen some of the Squirrels don’t even bother going inside of it. They just scamper over the outside. It wouldn’t be easy as it has no grip. I havent had a lot of time to check it out, so I am not sure if it is spoiling the Squirrel activity. Let us know if you think it is. This is the last week that Vicky and her Family are with us. Unfortunately David is not coming down this week so I wont be able to get him to add anything this week. Somehow we will try to add something.

People are predictable. Today at Pitpear Farm the next farm to Denbury up the Valley owned I believe by a Mr.Webber, there was a day of shooting. Mr.Webber was the person who we outbid for the Wood. I was told that he was very upset that he was outbid, and I should think even more so when I phoned him the day after telling him that the reason that we had purchased it was to stop him shooting in the Wood, and that under no circumstances was he, members of his family or any person that he may invite to shoot on his land were to be in the Wood with a firearm or to shoot into the Wood. Maybe today’s shoot had something to do with that.

When we visited the Wood last Sunday to look it over before the auction there was a Pheasant Feeder hanging from a tree. The feeders are put up to encourage Pheasant to the area so that they are easier to shoot. The feeder had been taken down the morning after I had phoned Mr.Webber. I don’t like Game Bird shooting I believe it to be the foulest of all blood sports and that includes Fox and Deer Hunting with Dogs. My beliefs put aside there are times when it has to be tolerated. We have another local Farmer who has shoots. What I have seen of the way it is organised I can just about tolerate it.

Because of other pressing work that needed doing on the Farm I was unable to see if any one was shooting in the Wood. The two times that I went to the Wood there was no one in it. After the coming week I will have more time. I will also start looking at the options of webcams to monitor the Wood. What ever I will make sure that no one enters the Wood for shooting.

There are people who should not be allowed Firearms Licences. Those people who are dangerous and those that do not consider other people or Wildlife. Those people should have their licences revoked.

This reminded me of when I saw Karen’s fireworks photos and thought there was a similarity. Julia.

4 Photographs dated 8/11/08 Charmouth Beach in Dorset . Rose W’canton.

The reason that it was important to acquire the major part of Ash Wood is that it borders onto Denbury. Over the past few years we have had problems with neighbours shooting in the Wood without Somerset County Council the owner permission. Some of those shooting in the Wood have been shooting on the boundaries of Denbury that has been causing disturbances to our Horses and ourselves. The Woods have two bridle paths passing through it and on a number of occasion’s the unexpected shooting has caused the Horses to panic, only the riders good riding ability has stopped there from being serious accidents. From one Bridle path to the other is a short distance that can easily be reached by the shot of as shotgun, so you can imagine both Horse Riders and Pedestrians using the Bridle Paths were in danger of being shot by stray shotgun cartridges or rifle bullets.

There was also indiscriminate shooting of Wildlife. Only last year I heard shooting and went to investigate. The shooting was being aimed at a Rookery. The persons eyesight wasn’t that good, for out of a tree fell a Blackbird. I had two option to try to stop what was going on in the Woods. One was to forcibly remove them or get the Police involved. I decided the Police in the hope that some people Gun Licences would be revoked. Unfortunately as much as the Police understood and fully agreed as did the Police Firearm licencing Department there had to be a number of different witnesses to the incidents. The relevant areas are now covered to catch any person shooting and now all of the Wood will be covered. One person was told in no uncertain terms that we acquired the Wood and that under no circumstances are they to trespass off of the bridle paths and never to carry guns in the Wood or to shoot into the Wood.

We will try to get help from different bodies to help with making the Wood a safe haven for Wildlife, to help with different work that will need doing. Another option is to syndicate the Woods for Wildlife enthusiast, giving them the opportunity to part own a Wildlife Haven and also help in its upkeep.
