There are only a couple of more days of photographs left.

FOUR PHOTOGRAPHS FROM CLUMBER PARK. LYNNE.

This is what remains of the village of Hallsands Devon, the rest fell into the sea.

Pennywell Farms two Female Reindeer went home yesterday. I have got to admit that I was pleased to see them go for they have been hard work. Both wanted to be the boss from when they first arrived. That wasn’t such an issue until feeding time when they would eat all the feed between them leaving our Females not getting any food, I finished up standing with the Reindeer for about twenty minutes at both the morning and evening feeds to make sure that all of the Reindeer had their fair share. If you noticed the darker Pennywell Female on the webcams she was a bully and for ever chasing any females that got to close to her. I should think that she went back ti Pennywell a bit lighter than when she arrive.

What a performance it was trying to catch them yesterday to load them into the vehicle for their return journey. One we managed to catch within a very short time with just three people. The other one, the dark one again was a pig. It was just as well that I don’t own a gun or she would have finished up as venison on a plate. We chased around for that animal for well over an hour. From one end of the Reindeer paddock to the other would be getting on for a couple of hundred metres. Believe you me it felt like it after running up and down it a few times. It didn’t help as our Lads were on a job elsewhere. Even when one arrived back it didn’t help a lot. He manages to slip over when making a dive at it. Our other Lad with a Friend arrived and helped. We got a little nearer to catching it with six of us and the Reindeer a little out of breath as we were, but no way was we going to catch he. In the end we needed to get a long length of sheep netting stretching most of the way across the width of the field, walking towards her to make any exit small. We lost her once when she ran between a small gap. On the next attempt we cornered her with the net and were able to grab hold of her. It wont be worth the trouble if she is not in Calf.

SWANS ON THE LAKE IN CLUMBER PARK. LYNNE.

Going by the way that Padfoot is acting his Rutting season has ended. There is only one of Pennywell Farms Females that has time to return and that is on Monday. None of the other have been seen to return so with a bit of luck we may have Reindeer Calves next year.

The Pennywell Reindeer are due to go back home next Friday. We do hope that they are also in Calf/

We had the Reindeer Harness that we ordered from Sweden delivered on Friday. The neck collar does look as if it may be uncomfortable, but it is the traditional harness that is used both in Sweden and Finland. If I remember I will put a photograph of it on the Photo Page.

Elsie emailed me this morning to let me know that she had seen the same type of bread that I wrote about last night. Elsie saw it at 28p.
I cant let this go and I spoke to our Local Tesco Store Manager about it. He thought that the prices were the same nationwide. Elsie thinks differently as she has noticed the difference in prices from the north and south when she has been on Holiday. There can never be a justification for large price variation. Pensioners, low paid and those on benefits all experience hardship where ever they live.

I have one to beat the 33.33% increase in the value bread. We put peanut butter on on loaf and Tesco value marmalade on the other. Just under two weeks ago the marmalade cost 28p today it cost me 49p over a 100% increase. That is an absolute disgrace and shows the Tesco are directing the increases on those that are already buying the cheapest products and do not have a choice.

I have on purchased two value items from Tesco, both to feed the Badgers so the is a very good chance that more of their value products have had exorbitant price increases hitting the pockets of those people who should be helped.

Karen saw one of the Female Reindeer standing on its rear legs pushing on my back. She was trying to reach the feed scoop that I put above me head as they try to eat it before I have time to put it in their trough. One of the Pennywell Farm Reindeer is now eating with our Reindeer without to many arguments. The other one just wont eat with the group so I keep her away whilst the others are feeding. I keep food in the scoops until the other females are finished so that she gets her feed.

The Reindeer jumping on my back reminded me when we had a couple of Quanaco. They are a type of Llama and as the Llama are of the Camelid Family. Unlike the Llama they tend to be all of the same light brown colour. I cant remember how we got them and I only got to know what they were when we went to sell them. I was selling them as they were two Males and to say that they were a nuisance would be an under statement. The first person to look at them told me what they were, as he was looking for Llamas he did not buy them. The next potential purchaser was a very posh Lady who spoke as if she had a plumb in her mouth, very proper and she let us know. The Quanaco were with our Llama in the Badger Field before we knew we had then, that is of course if they were there. The Lady was more interested in the Llama when she saw them but they were not for sale. Even after being told she continued petting the Llama with her back towards the Quanaco who both without any warning knocked her to the ground and started to stamp on her. Even after getting them away from the Lady within seconds of her finishing on the ground she was still showing signs of scrapes and bruises. She wasn’t a very happy Lady I can tell you, and the plumb in her mouth disappeared being replace with a barrage of foul language aimed at both the Quanaco and myself. I should think that she gave up on the idea of keeping members of the Camelid Family.

Karen has asked to see a photograph of our Antique Gates that we are putting up at the entrance of our Driveway. The Gate Posts and railings are in place. As we are having the gates electrically operated they will need to have a couple of brackets welded on to the gates so that we can fit the mechanism. That is going to be done this Saturday. Whilst that welding is being done we are going to have the hinges welded so that it will be difficult to remove the gates. They would be worth a few pence in scrap value as they are so heavy. I would not like to lose them so they will not be hung on the Posts until then. When I say heavy, believe me they really are. Even my Lads and myself struggle to lift them, They would still be difficult to lift with four men. When they are hung I will put a photograph on the Photo Page.

The Pennywell Farm Reindeer surprisenly have not been that friendly since they have been here. I thought that as they were in an open Farm they would be very easy to get on with. On the contrary until today neither had come very close to us. This afternoon we managed to get one of then to come close to feed from a feed scoop, the other female is very wary. Other than Padfoot she chases all of the other Reindeer away from the feed troughs, not allowing any of the other Reindeer to have any feed until she has finished. That would be alright if she left any, she just keeps eating until the food is all gone.

Our Reindeer were from a Herd where they would not have got any individual attention, so we really are surprised and pleased just how friendly they are. Even Padfoot who we were told was a threat in the Rutting Season has been exceptionally good. We were told to be very careful not to go into the field with him. To make sure that all the Reindeer get the food that we put in the troughs I go in the field with Padfoot very close by and he has not shown any aggression at all. A few weeks back he did half heartedly attack a front wheel of the quad bike, so I always keep an eye on him just in case, for his antlers would do me a fair bit of damage.

With the clocks going back tonight, as long as I don’t forget I will be feeding the Badgers at 5.20pm. To the Badgers it will be feed time as usual. Why we continually year after year have to suffer disruption that the clock changes cause I cannot understand. I would like most others prefer it to stay lighter at night. Just for the amount of power it would save, you would think that some politician would use a private members bill to have it altered if one is needed at all that is.

The two Reindeer from Pennywell Farm that are here to be mated by Padfoot wont allow our Reindeer to feed. I would have expected a little bickering but it is a bit full on. For two days our females have not had any feed at all. Tonight I have needed to go in the Reindeer field so that the feed is had by all. Fortunately Padfoot is behaving himself, but keeping the two separated I have to be in between Padfoot and the two females, far away from the gate to be in an uncomfortable place if Padfoot did decide that I was not welcome in his domain. My being in the Field does cause another problem as two of our females are particularly friendly, so much so that when I initially go into the Field they prefer to inspect me than eat the feed that I am protecting for them.

As some of you have noticed, Padfoot is keeping busy and hopefully he is doing his job, we will only know how well if we get any Reindeer Calves. Although Padfoot is eating well and seems lively he has been scouring. We have given him antibiotics, multivitamin and he has been wormed so we hope that the scouring will stop. We went to Cricket St Thomas this afternoon to get a bag of the feed that he was fed on whilst there. It could be the change of feed that has caused the scouring. Another reason could be that there is a lot of good grass feed still in the field. Padfoot when at Cricket St Thomas was in a lot smaller enclosure to what he has at Denbury, so there was little grass for him to feed on. We give the Reindeer barley straw to eat, but when there is grass available they rarely eat it. In the wild Reindeer diet consist of a lot of lichen, mosses and grasses when they can find them. They are also partial to Willow, Hazel and Ivy leaves, I don’t know if they can find them in the wild but they eat them from the hedges around their field. We also cut branches off of the Willow Trees around the Farm, you have probably seen the large Willow branches that we put in the field.

We are clearing around the Lake and Pond so that they can be seen as you drive down our driveway that runs along the side of them. In the area are a few Willow Trees, one of them had grown very large in a very short period of time, so much so that a parts were leaning over. We have cut that down over the past few days and fed part of that to the Reindeer. With the Willow gone it has opened the Lake and Pond area up and there is now a good view from the camera that we put up to watch the Geese on the Island. I will show it on the webcam one day next week.

On my way to Cricket St Thomas today I needed to fill our car with diesel. With the publicity that Tesco had reduced their petrol cost I thought that I would wait until I got to the Tesco petrol station in Chard that is near Cricket, to fill the car. I passed a quite a few petrol stations on the way, all of them had petrol priced at 98p and as low as 95p even a couple of independent stations. When I got to Tesco in Chard their price for petrol was 101.99p. They did have their 5p discount if you spent

Here is your awwwwwwwwwww for the day Marie/NJ

These are great pics!!!!!

A baby moose was in distress in a creek. A man got him out of the creek , tried to find the mother & send him on his way, but eventually the moose stumbled back into the creek & was rescued again. The baby moose followed the man home.

The man has only a small cabin so he took the moose to another neighbor, who took these photos. They took the moose the next day to a woman who looks after wild animals & she put it in a pen with a rescued fawn. Marie/NJ.

The two Female Reindeer from Pewnnywell Farm have settled in very well. We haven’t seen any arguments between them. At feed times they tend to hang back a little but once our Reindeer are eating they soon join in. The Reindeer Field is calm and looking a little fuller than before they arrived.

It is very mild for this time of the year but the leaves on the trees are changing into their Autumn colours. We need for it to stay dry so that we are able to leave the Horses out in their Field. With the rain that we have had over the Summer the grass didn’t stop growing so there there is still a lot of to be grazed off. If I had realised that the weather was going to be as good as it was last week I would have taken a cut of grass off of the Valley Field. There would have been little chance of it making hay as we were getting heavy dews in the mornings and the grass would not have dried completely but we could have made haylage.

Haylage is made by wrapping the bales just before the grass is completely dry. As it is wrapped it is a lot more expensive to make than hay. It take a few weeks to mature in the plastic wrap. Make it right, when the bales are opened it sends out a sweet smelling aroma that Horses cant get enough of. Make it wrong and you could well finish up with bales of mouldy feed that could well cause Horses problems if eaten, so we always wary about making it.

Thought some of your many viewers might like this. Janet.

This tiny deer was delivered by Cesarean section at a wildlife hospital after his mother
was killed by a car. Little Rupert, who is so small he can fit in an adults hand, was born
after vets failed in their battle to save his mother.

At just six inches tall and weighing just over a pound, he is now in an incubator in the intensive care unit at a Wildlife Hospital in Buckinghamshire, England . He has only recently opened his eyes.

We brought him out and got him breathing and then he went into an incubator on oxygen.

He is now being fed by a tube.

Tucked up: Rupert in an incubator

Staff are optimistic Rupert, now five days old, will make a full recovery.

Deer are very, very tricky but this one has spirit. He’s an extremely feisty.

little guy and quite pushy.

There is a 50% increase in occupants of the Reindeer Field. We have been asked for Paddy to try to sire two Reindeer Calves for two females that belong to Pennywell Farm in Devon. The two Females arrived this morning from Devon. Our Reindeer had a bit of a shock when the newcomers were introduced into the Field. There was a little chasing around and clashing of antlers between the Females. They seemed to have settled down by this afternoon other than the odd threats. I don’t think that Paddy could believe his luck. One of the Females has only one eye. It was like it when Pennywel acquired it. The two Females will be with us until the end of November, about the time that the Rut should finish.

Jet, do you all remember the little black bundle we brought home about 6 months ago for daves mum well this is him now. Sue.

The Female Reindeer with the maggot infestation damage to her mouth died last night. We were surprised as she looked as if she was getting a little better, but she was still scouring quite badly and I should think that it was that they made her die. She was eating and drinking well yesterday afternoon and was very alert. When she was checked at 8.pm again she looked fine. Just before 10.30pm she was looked at again. She was barley able to lift her head. I went immediately to the stable but in the couple of minutes she had just died. It could have been something that she had eaten whilst she was missing. I am concerned that she may have been given something to eat by the people that did not tell us that she was in and out of their garden. The Veterinary has sent a sample of the Reindeer dropping to a Laboratory for testing. We will see what the results tomorrow.

The Reindeer escaping was of course my fault, although I did ask the people who sold us them to look at the field to tell us if it was secure to keep Reindeer in. If we had been told anything other than it was secure we would not have let them into the Field. Two of the Female Reindeer have never attempted to get out of the Field but the other two were escaping every day. We put the Reindeer who was keeping the injured one company back into the Reindeer Field straight after the death.

There was some good news with the Reindeer today. Padfoot has served one of the Females today. We were working in the Reindeer Field making sure that it was secure and we have seen him cover her many times. We have noted the date. The gestation period is 210 to 220 days so as long as the mating was successful we may have a Calf in the middle of next April. Another of the Females may have been served last week but I an not 100% sure.
