There are five new photographs on the Photo page, starting from number one. I am sure that there must be some good photographers who have not yet sent any photographs in for the Photo page.

Dave has bought a new telephoto lens for his fancy camera here is one of the first results !!

Another mishap and they were as surprised as you when Thornton was born. Elsie.

This thrush came to visit me yesterday, he is eating cooked pastry. PM.

Goats? on the North Cornwall coast path near Crackington Haven. CH.

A red squirrel at Formby point seen at easter Angela (Merseyside)

Emmi has not returned home as she has not come into season yet. Mares normally cycle 21 days after their foaling heat. Some Mare may go longer. If she is not ready to go to the Stallion in another day or so she will be given an injection to bring her in season. I don’t like the Horses to be away from the Farm any longer than need to be.

Minty gave birth to a Lamb yesterday. We looked all around the barn just in case she had given birth to twins, and that one had gone astray as Thornton.

I have not been able to show the Geese very much for the last few days, as for most of the time other than today they have been out of view on the Island. Other than them flying around the Lake every now and then they have been on the Lake for four or five days. I don’t know why the disappeared this morning. The way they have been acting they should nest on the Island.

With the recent talk of coal fires I remembered this pic of Charlie one of our cats, she died at christmas aged 21 1/2. We hardly ever light the fire now as she was the one who made us light it!!! Rose W’canton.

The Close Season for the Pheasants Shooting started on the 1st of February, the last day being the 1st of October. For those who have not heard of it, it is the time of year when it is illegal to Shoot Pheasants. I cant imagine that the law was passed for any other reason other than to allow the Pheasants to produce their young so that they can be shot next year. There are Close Seasons for most Game Birds. Probably the best known are the Grouse. The Close season for those start on the 10th of December and finishes on the 12th of August. Hence the phrase the Glorious Twelfth.

There must have been a few people around our area who forgot or ignored the Law. I must admit I thought that it was today the 4th. I don’t know why that date stuck in my mind. I hope it wasn’t important. To late now anyway. If I have known for sure of the date, I would have had the shooting stopped. Any person who shoots Pheasant would have known the dates of the Close Season. If they didn’t they should not be allowed a gun. We heard shooting on the 1st 2nd and yesterday. The Police will prosecute any person found shooting Game Birds in their respective Close Season. Different Game Birds have different Close seasons.

I am still at a loss to understand why hunting with dogs was banned and not Game Shooting. As I have said before I believe that shooting is by far a more cruel activity, than what was banned. I recently was in a conversation with a person who has a Pheasant Shoot. I have told him my feelings about the Sport. I like or love my Pheasant Shooting he told me. Why I cant imagine. You don’t need to be an expert shot to shoot a Pheasant. You would be an extremely bad shot if you missed one, especially as Beaters push the Pheasants in to the Guns, and with the wide spread of the shot from the shotguns cartridges. That is why so many Pheasants are injured rather than being killed outright, by the inexperienced people on Corporate perk day outings and the wannabe big game shooters.

You can take a ride on the old tram if you fancy the experience.
Elsie.

This was in today’s Daily Mirror, a nice story.
Elsie.

The other are from Sue as last night descriptions.

Rose from Wincanton asked about Breeze and Ewy’s friendship, and does Ewy visit the Sheep pen. I think Ewy’s believes that she is now a Horse. Now that we are stabling the Horses of a night Ewy is be left on her own in the field. Every morning we watch her making her way to the field gate to wait for Breeze when we turn her out after her morning feed. When we call the Horses in of a night to stable them, Ewy comes down with them. Ewy get to the gate and is unsure to risk following the Horses to their stable. She gets so far and then panics, skidding to a stop, turns tail and has it away so fast the stones of the cottages car park fly every where. You would think that Ewy would go and lay by the Sheep pen of a night. Instead she disappears into the wood once the Horses go in to be stabled. The Horse field will soon have to be rested, so they wont be turned out. Ewy might then decide that she want to be a Sheep again.

When I went to feed the Badgers tonight, I heard the Fox starting their breeding. I am sure that many of you have heard the Urban Fox when they are due to mate. It is a chilling screechy screaming noise. I had never heard it until moved to Denbury. So I must admit I did wonder what the noise was. The noise is not part of the mating, they are calling to each other and call like it most of the year, it is just more pronounced during the mating season. As you must have noticed we have a lot of Fox here, so we the mating season goes on and off for nearly two
months.

I told you not to hold your breath waiting for the Portland Ewe to Lamb. I am surprised that she hasn’t, her udder is so large you would think it would burst.

We have guests for dinner tonight, so unfortunately there will not be a Diary other than, the Glorious Twelfth was yesterday, I personally think it any thing other than glorious. On checking the dates of the start of the shooting season I came across the website below. I have not had chance to read it properly, maybe one or two of you may get chance to, and let me know how it reads, for it looks to me at a first glance that restrictions on the shooting season have been relaxed.

The Dove hatched at least one of its chicks yesterday, I managed to catch it head above the side of the nest.

Alex asked if we have found out if Lady is…

Alex asked if we have found out if Lady is in foal. To be honest we have been so busy after the flood, we have not had time to get the Veterinary in to scan her. We have not seen Lady come in to season since she was covered. That would be a good sign that she is in foal. Even more so with Branston being able to be close to Lady’s stable. If Lady did come into season we would soon know with Branston being a Colt, by the way he acted. Woody although ill, has come into season a couple of times since Lady has been back from being covered. Branston let us know then. I will try to get the Veterinary in next week to make sure that if she is in foal she is not carrying twins, that you wouldn’t want in a thoroughbred.

The other reason I need the Veterinary to come in, is that I need him to look at Breeze, as we have not seen her come into season this year. I am concerned that she maybe in foal. If she is it will not be good news, as there is a chance that she was covered by one of the Colts last year. I was not told about it until a couple of months ago. By the time I was told it was to late to do anything about it. By all accounts the Colts got out, and were seen with Breeze last November. I am hoping that she had finished cycling by then. But if my memory serves me right it was quite warm then. Mares will stay in season longer if t is warm. I would like to see Breeze have a foal, but having one in October, for that is when she would have it, would not be a very good time. Breeze and any foal would be stabled through the winter. Not a good start for a foal. The foal would be getting on for six month old, before it it was running about in the fields with Breeze.

With thoroughbred Horses like Lady and Woody, the ideal time to have a foal would be February to March time. There is a chance that the weather would be kind, so that the mare and foal could get out in a field for part of the day. and the spring grass would be starting to grow. Some breeders try to get their mares to foal in early January, so that they have a full year for the foals to grow before becoming yearlings. Get it wrong, and the mare foals late December, you are in all sorts of trouble, for as soon as January the first comes, on that days the days old foal becomes a yearling. The foal then grows being out of its age for racing. The Manager of the Stud where Lady was covered, made a visit to Denbury yesterday, and told us of an occurrence that happened this year. The mare in question was the highest priced mare sold last year. In foal to a top stallion. It sold for over
