Starting from number eleven there are five new photographs on the Photo Page.

The photographs below and more were sent to me as possible webcam site by Christopher Quigley. We never heard back from him.

We still have lots of photograph to put on the Photo Page, some sent in as long as three weeks back.

Arnie and Thornton are well over there illness’s. Arnie is coming in at night at a trot, something he had lost for a few weeks.

As for Thornton he seem to have got a new life and is now as good as the boss of Tass and Kye. He wont stand any nonsense from them and puts his head down to let them know that they will get a butt. On walks with Tass and Kye it is Thornton who instigates any play, and especially with Tass. They play very well, with Thornton playing very much like a Dog. As long as Thornton is in earshot, all that needs to be said to Tass and Kye are you coming for a walk and Thornton appears ready to go as well.

The Sheep came back today with Ewy in the flock. When we get the Sheep into Lamb it will be interesting to see if Ewy comes in with them.

Sorry that we gave you short notice about the Scottish Wild Cat Talk that is Live tonight. Hopefully it will be recorded and we will show it again.

The first three photographs were sent in by Sue.

Just a couple of pics from when I spent a few days with my friend in devon in october,
this is the view from her back garden
the next one wasa stallat the German Christmas market. Sarah.

Just after I had finished last night Diary Thornton very quickly started to get better. So much so that he got the devil in him and on seeing the door that leads to the upstairs open he made a dash to get upstairs. As soon as he saw that I was in pursuit, he must nearly had broke his own speed record running around one of the bedrooms. So that I would not catch him he made his exit from the bedroom by jumping onto the bed. Once out of the bedroom door he had two choices of what way to go. One was running up our long landing or the other down the stairs. Knowing he was in trouble he decided on the stairs. Unfortunately Thornton is a lot slower going down the stairs than he is at going up them, more the pity as I would be able to catch him well before he reaches the top. Thornton is now eating and drinking as he should. Thornton most defiantly had a blockage in his gut. You could see that his droppings had a coating of the liquid paraffin that he had been given to clear any blockage.

Arnie is also better with no signs of what ever it was that caused him to be unwell. He is also eating as he should and I don’t have any concern about him now.

Here is a warming thought for you, today the 21st of December is the date of the Winter Solstice. Gradually the days will now start to get longer. Although we still may have the worse of the Winter to come, at least the longer days start to lead into Spring.

As Thornton had shown no signs of eating overnight I decided that he needed to see the Veterinary. We are very busy and really did not have the time to wait around the Farm Yard for the Veterinary to arrive so the best option was to drive Thornton to the Veterinary Practice in Minehead that is over twenty miles away.

As my vehicle had a Horse Trailer attached I had no option but to take one of my Lads cars. He wasn’t best pleased when he was told that Thornton was to be a back seat passenger. Like most Lads he was running the car on air so my first stop was a petrol station on the way to the Veterinary. The Garage is only small but we still managed to get a few comments about a Sheep in the back of the car. People must have thought that I was not all the ticket.

Thornton was examined at the Veterinaries, the only positive comment being that he was in very good condition. He was treated for possibilities rather than a positive diagnosis, receiving a jab of antibiotics, a jab of a pick you up and a dose of liquid paraffin that I insisted on, just in case he had a blockage in his gut. It has alway been our concern at what Thornton may eat. Most Sheep in the world graze on grass in a field, with the odd corn feed. Thornton feed on any thing that he see that he fancies. We constantly are taking wire, paper, string and lots of other bits that he nibbles at.

The Journey back home from the Veterinary was a nightmare. Thornton would not keep still. On the way to the Veterinary he was the ideal passenger, the complete opposite on the way back. I had to stop the car three times as he somehow managed to finish up on the floor stuck between to front and rear seats.

Thornton has been in the Farm House all day. He is having a little nibble at his feed and paper that he managed to pull down, and laying down half a sleep. This evening although he still not eating he is very much alert and getting into mischief pulling a tea towel and any thing else he can get to off of the work top. Hopefully he will start to eat soon.

Starting from number twelve there are four new photographs on the Photo Page.

We have lots of photograph for the Photo Page. All that you have sent in wikll be put on.

They have left me. Karen Stoke.

I think this lady .goes there every day to feed the geese, and ducks, it was lovely to watch she was talking to them. Karen Stoke.

This goose was desperate to get away as the seagulls were closing in on it but it got away. Karen Stoke.

Fred & Cleo have been told off, they both retreated to one of there baskets. Karen Stoke.

We put Arnie out into the Horse Field for a few hours today. He is still not a 100% but seems to be getting a little better every day.

Thornton seems a little under the weather. He hasen’t been eating as he normally does. He is walking around alright and we noticed him nibbling at the hay this morning. He dosen’t look in any distress we will watch him over the next few hours. With Thornton you can never know what he has eaten that may not agree with him.

Today we have sent to the Barn Owl Trust new equipment for next years (2009) Nest Box Webcam. With the new equipement we hope to broadcast the nesting in colour during the day and mono at night with infra-red lighting. We have also sent the wiring so that the broadcasting can be with sound.

The artical below was sent in by Marie.

Being an animal lover, I was reading this with interest when I had a good chuckle at the end.

Thornton is none the worse for yesterdays ordeal. Pity that I could not say that about the back seat of my car. There are perfect foot prints of Thornton feet. If the Police were looking for a Sheep culprit he would be well of banged to rights.

As you may have seen we had our driveway hedges cut back today. It will make the Reindeer’s Field easier to see and hopefully for you to be able to see more of the Reindeer. As I was not about whilst it was being cut the contractor was unable to go into the Field to make a better job of it. He will be returning in the next week to finish off the job.

At 6.37pm whilst writing the Diary I caught a glimpse of an Owl swoop down on what I can only think was a Rat. It was over so quick if I had blinked I would have missed it. As you know one of my biggest fears are Rats. As much as I would want to poison them, I cant in case an Owl catches a poisoned Rat for it would kill the Owls. When you do see the Rat being taken by an Owl it makes up for having to suffer seeing the Rats. With a bit of luck the Owl will return. We purposely do not do any work in the Badger Field. One reason is that if any heavy vehicles go over the Badger sett it is liable to go into the hole causing damage to the vehicles or injury to the operator.

We will be unable to do a Diary of renew the Photo Page until Thursday as essential work on data base needs doing.

As there was little to write about I was not going to do a Diary entry tonight. Then at about 4.50pm just before I was to go to feed the Badgers there was a light knock at the Farm House door. On opening the door in ran a panicking rat type dog with a large man in a position to follow it. Tass thought it was great and but for me shouting at her the rat type dog could well have been shaken as Dogs do when they catch rats, leaving it dead. This part was finished as quickly as it started with the dog running towards the man who was able to scoop it up before Tass had.

I screamed as loud as I could at the man what the **** do you think you are doing. Your Sheep have ran up the drive he replied and I am knocking to let you know. I knew that it was not the Sheep that had run up the drive, I knew that they were in the Field, it could only have been Thornton who had been laying in the Farm House Porch only a short time before. He had obviously been chased by the rat type dog who had not been on a lead on the footpath that goes through the Farm. The man had put the rat type dog on the ground, to I can only assume to belatedly put a lead on the dog, unfortunately he got loose and also ran down the drive with the man in hot pursuit being followed by my ranting and raving about the dog not being on a lead, and that if I had got to my gun before he had put a lead on the dog I would shoot it for Sheep worrying. That would have been a bit difficult as I don’t own a gun. The speed that the man was chasing after the dog he may well have believed it.

After I had fed the Badgers I came in to do the Photo Page. After 10 minutes or so I realised that I had not seen Thornton and that I needed to make sure that he was alright. I looked all around the places where Thornton would hang out and found no sign of him. I checked the stream to make sure that he had not been chased into it. I had run out of all of the places where he may have gone, but there was still no sign of him. I could only think that Thornton had been in front of the man and the rat type dog and had kept on running believing he was being chased either in the direction of the footpath or down the Drive. What ever I needed to go down the Drive. As the new electric gates would have stopped Thornton from getting out of the Farm, if he wasn’t there I would need to go to the end of the footpath that went through Fields, that were getting on for a mile away.

I passed through the electric gates at the end of the Drive that close automatically unless the remote control is pushed on exiting. I fumbled in the dark for the remote that I had put back into its place to close the gates in case Thornton was following behind me, when suddenly his head appeared behind the closed gate in our Field opposite the end of our drive. As I got out of the car Thornton started to call out to me, being behind the closed gate was making him panic so I needed to hold him in case he decided to run. There was only one action I could take and that was to put him in the back of the car to get him back down the Drive to the farm where he knows. I haven’t looked to see what state the back of the car is in. If I hadn’t fumbled for the electric gate remote control I would not have seen Thornton. I would never had guessed that he would have been in that Field behind a closed gate. The man or someone must have put him there. If I had not found him, even if he knew the Drive led to the Farm, he could not have got through the gate and he may well have wandered off along the lanes to be lost or run over.

At both ends of the footpath that passes through Denbury, signs are displayed telling that dogs should be on leads and under control. Idiots who ignore these notices cause injuries to Farm and Wild Animals. We had two of our Sheep killed by a dog a couple of years back. Unfortunately people and their dogs are rarely caught. Farmer do have a right to shoot dogs that worry animals.

Starting from number one there are five new photographs on the Photo Page.

Here are a few photos for the photo page. The ones from Minnesota are all from 1958 or 1959. I was looking at the old slides my brother put onto a DVD and was amazed at how these places have changed. My aunt still lives in the cottage but they redid it and added more bedrooms and a second floor over one side, but that is where some of the pictures of the lake and sunset I had put on the gallery earlier were from. The view from the drive at the farm was unchanged until this very last summer, when the farmer who owned the field across the road sold it to a developer who broke it into smaller 1 acre lots and put little ranch style beige houses on each one, except for the one closest to the county road. That parcel he got zoned commercial and sold to man who has a used vehicle lot on it now. The beautiful view now has used junk boats, cars, trucks of every size and shape, heavy equipment, farm implements, and metal sheds (weird but true) in it. And I guess that is progress.

The anemone is from my garden, and I just put it in. It is supposed to bloom in the fall, and it is just really pretty. Penny, Chicago x3

Not a lot to write about so I will tell you a few other things that Thornton gets up to.

When Thornton want to come in he knocks on the Kitchen door three times with one of his front feet. If he is not let in he will sometimes open the door as does Tass by pulling the door handle down with his front foot. If that fails he does not nag, he will lay down outside and tries again later. Thornton will often knock on the Holiday Cottage doors to be let in.

Most late afternoons Tass, Kye and Thornton are taken for a walk, some of you may have seen them in the Valley. The most obedient is Thornton. He will walk to heel unless he fancies a nibble of grass, when he gets left behind a bit. One call and he returns to heel. On returning to the Farm House Tass and Kye get a doggy treat, Thornton get a Horse Herbal treat. He waits by Kitchen units where they are kept looking in the direction of the treats until he is given one. Just recently as soon as we start the Quad Bike @Thornton come to see if we are going down the Valley and now follows, waiting patiently until it is time for us to return. If we start the Quad Bike and go without him he will soon be following.

Unfortunately Thornton is not House Clean and will leave his droppings and wet on the floor, so we do not allow him in any rooms where there are carpets. Sheep dropping and wet do not have any unpleasant odours and are easy to clean up. He will how ever let you know when he wants to go out by standing by the door and looking at you.

Starting from number one there are five new photographs on the Photo Page. WE HOPED THEY WOULD HAVE GONE ON THE PHOTO PAGE LAST NIGHT.

The photographs are being put on the Photo Page by someone else, so they may not be on the website when the Diary comes up.

There are only a couple of photographs for tomorrow night Photo page.

We had hoped to have made a start on the Squirrel obstacle course today. Unfortunately time ran out before we got round to it. Vicky’s boyfriend who is a joiner is coming to the Farm for a few days tomorrow. I don’t know if he knows but he has been delegated for the job by Vicky and her Mum.

Thornton really is something else. We can see our drive from the Farm House Kitchen. This morning we were watching the Sheep go from one field to the Horses Field, they were in no hurry and spent a few minutes standing in the drive, On seeing them Thornton went to socialise. Although he doesn’t usually mix with the Sheep he wasn’t pushed away and nearly followed the Sheep into the Field, who were going through an opening one by one. One of Dolly’s Lambs was waiting for Thornton to go through and when he decided he wasn’t the Lamb stayed with him. We thought that once all of the Sheep had gone the Lamb would quickly follow them not wanting to be left behind. Instead he stayed with Thornton who started to make his way back to the Farm House. After a few steps Thornton looked behind as if he was inviting the Lamb to follow, and he did following Thornton to the Farm House door. He wasn’t a bit frightened and even allowed a pat and ate a little of Thornton’s feed. My Lad and myself had to go back down the Valley. Thornton decided he and his friend would be coming with us. When we noticed that the pair were following us we managed to get them to return to the Farm Yard.

Last Saturday new Holiday Guests came to Denbury with a Dog that they took down the Valley for a walk. On their way back to their Cottage they pasted the Stables where we were working and told us Thornton had joined them for their walk. They could not believe the way that he had followed them, walking by their side and if he stopped he would go back to them when they called him.

Thornton is a character and is quite unbelievable what he gets up to. We would understand if you doubted his stories. I promise every word is true.

We have been working cutting logs from fallen trees at the end of the Valley this morning. Thornton decided that he was coming. Although he knows his way back to the Farm House from the Valley we would prefer not to have his company as he may wander off. As we set off on the quad bike he started to follow. He wasn’t very pleased to be chased back and you could tell by his actions and posture that he was determined that he was going to come with us. After three attempts of trying to make him stay in the Farm Yard we gave in because of the time it was taking.

As we set off Thornton walked by the side of the quad bike looking very pleased with himself. As we got into the Valley it was decided that we would speed the quad up and that with a bit of luck we would leave him behind and that he would make his way back home. No chance, the faster I went the faster he ran. I didn’t look at what speed we were doing until I was slowing down. Thornton was then doing 27 kilometers (17 MPH) an hour so he must have been doing well over 30 kilometers (18.3/4 MPH) at full speed and he would have done a good 100 metres at that speed. He was determined to keep up with the quad. He started to slow up and we slowed down in case he may have had a heart attack. When he had stopped he was steaming. How he managed the speed he was doing with such little legs I will never know.

Thornton stayed with us all of the time we were working, following and staying close until it was time to return, trotting by the side of the quad on the way home. We did speed up to 24 kilometers (15 1/2 MPH) on the way back and he was at a fast trot at that speed.
