Some of the colours at Denbury this afternoon.

Marsh Marigold on the edge of the Lake. Going over a bit, I should have taken the photograph last week when you could see very little green.

Apple Blossom in the Orchard.

Bluebells in Ash Wood. One of Jades special places.

More Bluebells.

Wild Garlic in Denbury Wood. All of the Wood is a Carpet of white.

Living at Denbury we at times forget what a beautiful place it is. I thought that you may like to share some of the special places at this time of the year. The Whole Valley is alive with the smell of the Wild Garlic. As I was taking the photograph of the Garlic I startled three Deer who were within twenty feet of me in the Wood. A young Vixen making her way towards the Farm House turned back when she caught sight of me as I was coming out of the Wood. Just as well with the Chickens and Geese in the Farm Yard and surrounding area.

Eleven of the Turkey Chicks have gone leaving us with six. four of the eggs did not hatch and one Chick died at the hatching. We made a mistake with the hatching by leaving the hatching tray uncovered, it was to slippery for the Chicks. This caused three of the Chicks that we kept to have splayed legs and they were unable to stand. We have hobbled the splayed legs with cut strips of elasticated bandage. The Chicks can now stand but if they fall on to their backs they are unable to roll on to their front and we have to turn them over so that they can stand up. We are hoping that the splayed legs will get right being hobbled. There is a a chance with odds against it that they wont. The Chicks are still in the Hatcher and will stay in there until we have to put the Geese eggs in it. That should be Tuesday or Wednesday next week. If the Chicks are able to walk properly I will put the webcam back on.

After speaking with other who have incubated Geese eggs we are told that they are quite difficult and that we may well finish up with no Goslings. We will see how it goes. If we are unlucky then we will let our Geese incubate their own eggs.

One Lady put an entry on the Forum twice over the past few days that at work she has numerous streams running at the same time, all minimised so that she can quickly look at them in between work. I would appreciate any of you doing so, not to. I am charged for every webcam that you have on. You cant watch two things at once. I cant and I don’t know any one who can. The donations that some of you have sent in, and the Google adds, that again some of you are accessing (thank you) is just about making it possible for us to continue. Leaving more than one webcam on, and also leaving them on when you are not watching them is causing unnecessary costs that in the end I wont want to pay, and the site will have to close.

The Peregrine Falcon webcam went live today. I don’t know a lot about it. I will speak to SWT The Fall of the Clyde tomorrow and let you know more.

There will not be a Diary tonight as we are getting the Hatchery webcam ready. We tried it at about 7.45pm and it is working well. Hopefully it will be broadcasting when the eggs are due to hatch. It should be over the next few days.

These are all photos taken in my garden.

After the run around that we had on Sunday to collect the Kune Kune, I am not to sure that I would want the bother of going all that way back this weekend. There never seems to be enough time in a day as it is. So for sure I don’t want to waste this Sunday. There is another alternative that I will let you know if I decide against going back.

What we did see when we went to collect the Kune Kune was the Chew Valley water complex that some of the Ospreys on there way to Africa drop off at. It would have been good to have had a look around if we had the time.

I finished fencing around the Lake today. There are now six strands of electric fencing wire up to as height of about 32 inches, the bottom five being about 4 inches apart, the top six inches from the last. This will stop the Otters from making a meal of our Fish and should stop the Fox from taking the Geese and Goslings. So that our Holiday Guests are able to get to the Lake we have put in two gates at opposite ends. There is a big red switch to turn the fencer on and off. It cant be missed so hopefully we have done enough to protect the Fish and the Geese.

All is on course for the Egg Hatching webcam. The Hatcher we hope to have this week and the page that will access the new webcam should be on the home page in a day or so.

SWT told me that they have sorted out the problem with the new Peregrine Falcon webcam. It is hoped that it will be working next Tuesday.

ALL TOOK AT RUFFORD COUNTRY PARK. LYNNE.

We let eight of our Geese out yesterday. It would have been the first time that they had ever had the chance to graze. To our surprise it wasn’t that difficult to get them out of the stable that they have been kept in since we got them a couple of weeks back. We put them onto the lawn area by the Holiday Cottages where it was easy to fence them in with sheep netting. They looked lost and didn’t really know what to do at first, but soon realised that the grass was what we had been cutting and giving them over the time that they have been here. The lawn is a large area and I don’t think that they could believe that they had all that freedom. The lawn is by the side of the Stream. This part of the Stream had been widened and made a bit deeper by previous owner of the Farm. This afternoon we have fenced off an area on the other side of the Stream so that the Geese can go into the water tomorrow. Getting the Geese back into the Stable of a night was also a lot easier that we had thought, it was just a case of walking behind them. If they strayed slightly, a little movement to our left or right put them in the right direction. That was until Thornton decided that he would help tonight. He is normally out with the Sheep until a little later, so we were taken by surprise when he turned up as we were getting the Geese in. The Geese were a little surprised too and went in the opposite direction that we were sending them. After chasing Thornton off the Geese soon went the right way.

Elsie, the Male Gander is still on the Lake. He disappeared a couple of times during the day. (May be he is playing away) but is always on the Lake at night.

Michael the SWT IT person was up at the Fall of the Clyde today. It was his intention to get the Peregrine Falcon webcam working, but unfortunately there was a problem. It may have been a faulty part that I sent. I posted a new party today, so with a bit of luck the webcam should be going next week.

We have managed to find a Sponsor for our egg hatching webcam. Some years ago a Veterinary who did an inspection for the suitability of our facilities for Ostriches, now runs a Incubation Sales business. Banbury Cross Incubators. By chance I found the business and recognised his name. He is going to supply us with a hatcher and various other bits that we need. He is a working Veterinary and has suggested that we may be able to broadcast operations from his Surgery. I will look into it over the next week and let you know more. The Veterinary still works with Ratites (Ostriches, Emu and Rhea) so we may be able to get an egg or two from those species.

My Daughter emailed me this delightful selection of photos. Isn`t he just adorable i have not seen a Hedgehog for many many years. Karen Stoke.

I thought that you would be interested in this update of the US Virgin Islands webcam. Michael was my first Contact on the Islands. Paul is the Managing Director of the St. Croix Environmental Association, who wants to get on with this project. As you can see by his email, if this project goes well we should be doing other Virgin Island webcams. Hopefully one on Turtles.

I just spoke with Michael Hartlage. He is returning to St. Croix from Atlanta tomorrow and we will get together Thursday. He has finished the drawing that we need to submit to the VI Port Authority for formal approval of the installation of the webcam on a dolphin mooring immediately south of the Frederiksted Pier.

I will write a letter to the VI Port Authority and VI Department of Tourism to gain final approvals.

Thank you for your commitment to this project. Once the webcam begins broadcasting images, I know there will be interest locating cameras at additional sites in the USVI. Yours, Paul

I am going to look again but I don’t think that there are any photographs for tomorrows Photo Page.

Peter at the Lock is going to put a camera on a Otter Holt next week, that is of course if the Osprey doesn’t turn up.

The other good news is that we are going to host another webcam for SWT on a Peregrine Falcon nest, at their Falls of the Clyde Centre. We sent the camera to them this week and it is in the process of being installed. If all goes well it should be working by the latter part of this month. The camera is a pan, tilt and zoom and will be able to be used to watch other wildlife and interests at the centre.

The other good news, or I hope so is the underwater webcam on the US Virgin Islands. My initial contact on the Island, Michael emailed me on the 2nd of February asking if I would agree to the project being handed over to St. Croix Enviromental Assoc.(SEA) All the permission for the webcam are in hand, but since his email I have been unable to contact Michael. Earlier this week I made contact with the association and emailed their Managing Director Paul Chakroff who will be overseeing the project. I spoke to Paul at 5.pm this afternoon. Paul is very keen to get the camera installed and will attempt to make contact with Michael over the weekend to get the webcam equipment that I sent to him. Paul will get back to me early next week with an update. Here is the URL for the St. Croix Enviromental Assoc.(SEA) website. http://www.stxenvironmental.org/index.html Once this webcam is up and running we hope to do another webcam with them. Hopefully Turtles.

I emailed Libor in the Czech Republic today to see what they are going to do on their webcams. There are a few different project that they are hoping to do. Hopefully he will come back to me next week with a decision.

One webcam that I had hoped to do was a Starling roost. All of the places that had a roost did not have a nearby network connection. Two weeks ago it was reported in our local paper that there was a roost in the middle Taunton, about six miles from the Farm. I am sure that if I had of known earlier I could have got a webcam going. If you remember I told you of a large increase of Starling above the Farm last Autumn. I should think that they joined the Taunton roost.

Our relationship with WWT ended last week. As you have probably noticed the cameras have not been on for four months. The previous Manager Neil was moved sideways. Our agreement with WWT about the cameras was undermined by the new Manageress, to the degree that when I went to collect them last week the computer working them had been taken out four months ago. Both cameras were damaged as the heating inside them was off. Unfortunately Neil has been ill for four months and was unable make sure that all was in place to keep the camera working. It was getting to political for me.

We have not heard any news for over a couple of months of the Meerkat webcam. This was being arranged with a third party. I cant now see that one happening.

Imagine my surprise when this landed between the sunbeds in Cyprus. Used to come every afternoon and wasn’t at all bothered about the people leaping up from their sunbathing as though an alien had landed! Janet South Yorks.

Another one. Janet South Yorks.

And another. Janet South Yorks.

It was a lot milder at Denbury today. There wasn’t any sun but it was probably the warmest day of the year. The milder weather seemed to bring the Lake alive. The Geese were on the Lake first thing this morning. They stayed the whole day, leaving just before I went to feed the Badger, but not before both the Goose and the Gander had spent a good while on the Island. Surely they are going to nest. If they don’t return in the morning I will take the boat to the Island and strim so that the ramp and the nesting place can be seen on the webcam.

On the Pond next to the Lake the little Grebe had returned and were diving for Fish and a couple of Mallard Ducklings had hatched, the may have been more Ducklings in the Reeds. I did try to put both the Little Grebe and the Mallards on the webcam but I did not catch them on it. On returning a Kingfisher darted in front of me, it was then that I saw the shadow of a few Carp that the milder weather had brought to the surface. When I got back to the Farm House I found the Carp on the webcam. None were Pike I am pleased to saw. There were some big Fish, one I estimated must have been getting on for 20lb. I was a little worried after seeing the Otter in the Valley in the Autumn that it may have taken some Fish, before I had electrified around the Lake. If the Otter had had any of the Fish it would have left the scales, but I did not find any. Touch wood I was lucky.

ALL TAKEN IN THE PEAK DISTRICT. LYNNE.

I have emailed Libor my contact a the Brno Zoo to find out what has happened to the Giraffe Calf. The Brno Zoo are members of the World Zoo Organization (WZO) that have standards that members have to conform to for the welfare of Zoo animals. I would not have allowed the webcam on the website if I had any concerns about the Zoo.

It is easy to criticise, but wrong when the full facts are not known and the facts are not known about the Giraffe Calf. Unfortunately with live stock of any type, there are always going to be dead stock, that life. We don’t know the circumstances of the pen that the Giraffe Cow was kept in. Was it safer for the Calf to be kept from the rest of the Herd until a little older? There is no way that the Zoo would do any thing that was detrimental to the Giraffe’s welfare, or to the Polar Bears. I believe that all Wild Animals should be in the Wild, but the real world is not like that. Most people have visited Zoo as entertainment for themselves and their Children not to see endangered Animals.

You have a choice, If you don’t like a TV program you turn it off. If you don’t like a webcam don’t watch it. To much criticism will only stop other webcam projects.

Elsie, please don’t take this as a criticism of yourself, it is not meant to be. In 2006 Paignton Zoo had a fire when 3 of their Giraffe burnt to death. Large inside and outside enclosures did not stop the accident. I was just after the fire in talks with Paignton to have webcams from the Zoo on our site. One of the reasons that we did not proceed with the project was that they wanted a delay of 24 hours in the broadcasting, that meant that the webcams would not have been live only recordings. A little short sighted I thought. Live webcams may well have seen the start of a fire.

We bated for rats the lower Badger feeding area two nights ago. It normally take a few days for the rats to take the bate. On checking it this evening all of the poison had gone and a large amount of the plastic container that the poison was in. There seems fewer rats in that area tonight. Some of the rats from the main Badger feeding will take the bate from where it is now as it is only 15m away. Within a couple of days we will bate the main area.

The Griffon Vulture webcam was a disaster last year. Simon the person who contacted us and set the location up had not made sure that every thing that was needed was in place or possible, and guess what, it wasn’t. we eventually got most of the equipment that we sent Simon returned to us, with the wireless equipment and camera that was on the Mountain still outstanding as the weather was to bad to climb to get it. As we may need a wireless connection for another webcam I asked Simon for the outstanding equipment to be returned. He told me that part of the mountain above the nesting site that the equipment was located on had fallen onto the equipment and it had gone. I wouldn’t have minded but he added that he had told me that the location was unstable and that could have been the outcome. I would never tell any person to risk loosing very expensive broadcasting equipment.

We are sending a new camera to Peter at Indian River Bay, Delaware this week for the Osprey webcam. It is a Pan Tilt and Zoom camera that Peter will put on the roof of his house that is at the most 200m from the nest. The new camera will be able to show the nest very close. The Osprey will be returning to both the Lock and Indian River Bay during February.

We were hoping to do a webcam with the Crown Estates in Scotland. Unfortunately it never happened and the equipment that we sent to them is being returned next week. In my telephone conversation with the Ranger at the location and my first contact, who with a promotion has moved to the Head Office we got talking about the possibility of doing a Golden Eagle. This year a platform is to be erected to encourage a nest site. It wont be this year that the Eagle will nest, if at all. If and when it does happen we will install a webcam at the location. The Ranger is to keep me updated with the site and I will let you know of any thing that happens.

Most years our drive is covered with thousands of Frog making their way to the Lakes to spawn. It normally happens from the middle of February into March. It is a nightmare trying to get in and out of the Farm as if we are not careful and move the Frogs out of the way some will get run over. Now that we have the gates installed at the entrance of the drive not so many will die from uninvited vehicles. With the camera that we installed last year down the drive overlooking the Lake and Reindeer Field we will be able to use it to see the Frogs.
