Starting from number one there are five new photographs on the Photo Page.

This reminded me of when I saw Karen’s fireworks photos and thought there was a similarity. Julia.

4 Photographs dated 8/11/08 Charmouth Beach in Dorset . Rose W’canton.

The reason that it was important to acquire the major part of Ash Wood is that it borders onto Denbury. Over the past few years we have had problems with neighbours shooting in the Wood without Somerset County Council the owner permission. Some of those shooting in the Wood have been shooting on the boundaries of Denbury that has been causing disturbances to our Horses and ourselves. The Woods have two bridle paths passing through it and on a number of occasion’s the unexpected shooting has caused the Horses to panic, only the riders good riding ability has stopped there from being serious accidents. From one Bridle path to the other is a short distance that can easily be reached by the shot of as shotgun, so you can imagine both Horse Riders and Pedestrians using the Bridle Paths were in danger of being shot by stray shotgun cartridges or rifle bullets.

There was also indiscriminate shooting of Wildlife. Only last year I heard shooting and went to investigate. The shooting was being aimed at a Rookery. The persons eyesight wasn’t that good, for out of a tree fell a Blackbird. I had two option to try to stop what was going on in the Woods. One was to forcibly remove them or get the Police involved. I decided the Police in the hope that some people Gun Licences would be revoked. Unfortunately as much as the Police understood and fully agreed as did the Police Firearm licencing Department there had to be a number of different witnesses to the incidents. The relevant areas are now covered to catch any person shooting and now all of the Wood will be covered. One person was told in no uncertain terms that we acquired the Wood and that under no circumstances are they to trespass off of the bridle paths and never to carry guns in the Wood or to shoot into the Wood.

We will try to get help from different bodies to help with making the Wood a safe haven for Wildlife, to help with different work that will need doing. Another option is to syndicate the Woods for Wildlife enthusiast, giving them the opportunity to part own a Wildlife Haven and also help in its upkeep.

There are five new photographs on the Photo page from…

There are five new photographs on the Photo page from number six. Getting short of photographs.

The first three photographs were taken when we went to visit the new additions to Denbury.

A baby Reindeer taken at Cricket St Thomas. David.

A pair of black swans and there signets taken at Cricket St Thomas. Vicky.

I reckon Karen was visiting the Cricket St Thomas webcams as we were visiting the Wildlife Park ourselves this morning to check out the our new additions. As you can see in the photograph that I took this morning, the Buck or Bull as they are sometimes called is a fine looking fella, his name is Padfoot and is about four years old. At this time of year they shed their coats so they do look a little moth eaten. By the time that they arrive at Denbury they will look a lot tidier. The Female is named Fluer, she is two years old and has not started to get any meaningful antlers. She had a Fawn this year but unfortunately she sat on it whilst giving birth. I could have had an older female, but it would have meant waiting until the Fawn had been weaned off of the Doe. As soon as the Buck starts to loose the velvet, we shall collect him from the Wildlife Park with the Doe.

Whilst at the Wildlife Park we tried to get a photograph of the Black Swan Cygnets that we are also getting. Unfortunately the Swans and Cygnets were hiding in the reeds. As you can see on the Photo page, Vicky took a photograph of the same Swans and Cygnets on a visit to the Wildlife Park, when she was holidaying at Denbury, a few weeks back. The photograph of the Reindeer Fawn was taken at the same time by her friend David. Since Vicky took the photograph the Cygnet are quite a lot larger, and have started to get their feathers, so we can hopefully collect them in the early part of September. I will speak to Neil from WWT to make sure that we can take them from the Swans before we do. The Black Swans originate from Australia and New Zealand and are therefor from the Southern Hemisphere. Although they are in the Northern Hemisphere they still breed as if they were still in the Southern, so the Cygnets were born in February time.

As you know our new sponsor for supplying our Bird and Badger food is Jacobi Jayne. They are trying out our site on a trial. If they find that they are getting sales through people linking from the site they will continue, so if any of you do order Bird Feed please give them a try. Free phone 0800 072 0130

Over the next few days you will see that our website has been revamped. The top header will still be flash, but changing to some of the Wildlife that we show, rather than attractions, many of which are not represented on our website. Some of the other pages will be showing various advertising so that we will be able to earn some income to be able site webcams into more locations and to keep this website continuing. Every time that you click onto one of the advertisement we will get a very small payment, not even a penny but with your help by clicking on the advertisements the Penny’s will we hope soon become POUNDS, DOLLARS AND EUROS.

Bliss and Misty arrived at their new home in Chantilly…

Bliss and Misty arrived at their new home in Chantilly at about 10.30am this morning. When I spoke to the Horse Transporter Driver, he assured me that they had both travelled very well and had not sweated up at all, always a good sign. The sea crossing was from Portsmouth was very calm. Both Fillies unloaded in his words, like old pros, pity the didn’t load as well. At the moment they are stabled next to each other. I must admit that I am relieved that they have arrived with no problems. It is not nice going out to the stables and yard without them being there, I reckon that it will take a good few days to get use to it. I will be travelling to Chantilly within the next few days, and I will let you know what it is like and how Bliss and Misty are. I shall also take a few photos to show you on the website.

The Red Deer Stag and the Hinds must be in the woods around Denbury. I saw the young Stag who was with them and being chased off on Monday night, but not the main herd. The young Stag would not have been far from the Herd. With a bit of luck they may be around tonight. The Stag came very close to the camera last night and I managed to get a good close in on the camera . I pretty sure that I saw eyes through the mist when that came down.

What we have seen over the past couple of days to our surprise, right above Lady’s stable was a Sparrow feeding a fledgling. We have also seen a lot of Blackbirds near the Farm House, and it looked very much as if two might have been mating. I will keep a look out to see if they have a nest.

I spoke to the Scottish Wildlife Trust about their webcams not working. Peter the Manager has had an accident. As he is the only person looking after the Lock of the Lowe’s visitors centre in the Winter there is no one else to get the webcams going. They will be back ASAP. Fortunately Denbury Farm has had some good wildlife visiting.

I do hope that many of you caught that eyeful…

I do hope that many of you caught that eyeful just after 8.pm, of the small herd of Red Deer with their Calves. They all seemed to be really enjoying themselves, prancing and racing around the field. I counted six adults and two Calves, but there could well have been a lot more. They didn’t stay around to long. They could be back tonight or tomorrow, as they were enjoying the new grass, that is coming through after the hay was cut. It was really good to see them. We often see a herd with up to twenty Deer, but rarely with their Calves, especially with the spotted coats.

I caught a glimpse of the Moorhen with her Chicks when I walked around the lake this afternoon. I don’t know where they came from but I also saw another four adult birds as I walked around.

Denbury never ceases to amaze me with the variety of wildlife that we have and see regularly. When we first did holidays here in 1998, we didn’t have webcams to see what wildlife we really had. It was obvious that like most farms there was a certain amount, and it was with that premiss, that we offered wildlife watching in our brochures. The webcams showed us, as well as those people who came here for the wildlife, what a haven for wildlife Denbury really is.

Last night the weather forecast was rain and cloudy. When I looked out of the window at midnight there was not a cloud to be seen. It would have been an ideal night to set the settings for telescope. This evening it looked promising that I could have done the setting tonight, it was little cloudy with some clear spots. Now the sky is so black it looks like it is going to pour down with rain. It did this morning for a good three hours, so heavy that it would have been unfair to put the Horses out after their morning feed.

A bit of an update on people that we have…

A bit of an update on people that we have been talking to with the possibility of installing web cams on their sites.

The people from a site that I am very excited about, are coming to Denbury this month or early August. One of the other organisation was the Forestry Commission. Although those who look after the wildlife, liked our suggestions, permission from the organisation would not be given. We are still talking to others who we would hope will join us.

This week we had an email from a site of the U.S. Wildlife and Fisheries Services, part of the email is as follows.

About a 10 acre pond on the Brazoria National Wildlife Refuge. Teal pond and refuge are major stopovers for migratory birds along the central U.S. flyway in addition to home for residential birds and alligators.

I spoke to one of their Botanist on the phone last evening. We will be putting together the options that are available with the remote location of the site. Good US locations tend to be in isolated areas. We had hoped to have had a camera on a Bald Eagle in Illinois US with a University. Various problems occurred with the location. This new location has satellite broadband and a building nearby with solar powered electricity. So the initial sign are good. It is near Houston Texas and the Gulf of Mexico.

I thought that I saw five Swallow nestlings, I could be wrong and I will look tomorrow. There are definitely four, and I am surprised that there are that many. There were five eggs in the nest. Two were in the nest many weeks back and had thought that the nest had been abandoned, so I moved the camera onto the other nest that fledged last week.

Sorry that the Osprey web cam has not been working…

Sorry that the Osprey web cam has not been working for most of the day. The worse part about it was that at 12.30am in the morning the second egg hatched. I had checked at about 12.15am, before I went to bed, that all the cameras were working, it was working fine then. I must of just missed the hatching. The problem of the camera not working has been a lesson to me. One of the telephone sockets at the Lock of the Lowes centre did not have a micro filter on it. That is the box that you are supplied with, when you go onto broadband, it fits into your telephone socket that you then plug your phone and computer socket into. I knew that they were important, but this was on a telephone extension. It has been rectified now and the picture is a good as before.

I went to bed later than I wanted to last night. When I checked the cameras before going to bed a few of the Badgers were out. One that looked like a Sow was playing with a cub. The Cub was having great fun trying to get the other who were out to play with it. After seeing one cub out last night I am sure that two of the Sows had Cubs this year. The one we have been seeing for the past few weeks must be a single. The other two Cubs that I have seen in the past week, must be a younger set of twins of another Sow, as I am sure that they look smaller. Hopefully all three will show themselves at the same time.

Some of you saw a Bird of Prey on the bird feeder this afternoon and this evening. It was a Buzzard. I should think that it was a female, the male would be a fair bit larger. I would guess that it was waiting for a Rat or Rabbit for dinner. There are a lot of both in that area. Rats wait for the seeds to fall from the feeders as the Birds feed, and there are always Rabbits that can be seen in the back ground of the feeders. When I walk up to refill the feeders or feed the Badgers, there are always six or more along the path.

We went this morning to a couple of the wildlife sites that are owned by The Somerset Wildlife Trust, to see if there were any locations for web cams, hoping that we could incorporate the Starling Roost during the Winter months with other wildlife in the other seasons. At both of the sites of the Trust, that we visited, it would have been difficult to install the cameras, although for wildlife enthusiasts they are excellent sites to visit. We did enjoy our short time there, and have promised ourselves a few hours there later in the Summer. We were told of another possibility, of another organisation that have wildlife sites in the area of Westhay, that may have the facilities to host a web cam, so that we would be able to broadcast the Starling Roost. On our way to the site we asked a local, who told us that the site we were going, would be a good position to view the roost. The person who we met who seemed to be in charge, denied that it was a good site to view the roost, when I questioned him on the possibility, he told us that a web cam would not be allowed at any place in the area because he would not allow it. What a shame. I will try as best I can to show a roost this winter. If I don’t succeed or you want to see it live, Westhay in Somerset is a good location, not far from junction 23 on the M5.

Congratulation to all who use the forum. Today the forum past the thousandth entry. Thank you all for supporting it. There has not been time to get a fun forum going yet. I will get it up and running very soon. It was nice to see the 25th anniversary greeting on the forum this morning, I am sure that there would be no objections to this type, similar entries.

As you have probably noticed we are continually looking for…

As you have probably noticed, we are continually looking for new sites and organisations for which we can host wildlife web cams. With that in mind, today we had a meeting with a representative of The Somerset Wildlife Trust at Fyne Court, a National Trust property, that The Somerset Wildlife Trust manage. It is only a short distance from the farm. If you are ever in the area, it is well worth a visit.

We discussed with the Trust various locations that may be suitable for web cams. Over the next week we plan to visit two of the sites. Westhay Moor National Nature Reserve and Catcott Lows and Catcott Heath that are very close to each other. WestHay Moor on the Somerset Levels and is recognised as one of Britains top bird watching locations. It is often featured in documentaries and BBC’s Springwatch. One of the biggest attractions is the arrival in the Autumn of several million Starlings, that fill the sky as they arrive to roost in the reeds each afternoon, before dusk, Their synchronized display before they roost is breath taking. If we can get an electricity supply and a broadband connection, we could be broadcasting from the site very soon. From the site you get many different types of wildlife throughout the year. This is NOT the site that I have not told you about.

I also made telephone contact with two other organisations that we will be talking to about hosting their web cams, both are very exciting and would make great viewing. One is going to look for potentials sites over the coming days. I will tell you who they are even if we are unsuccessful in attracting them to our site.

Woody had a bad night last night, you may have seen Lady and the Foals moving around their stable and Woody’s legs going in different directions, I just caught the end of it and saw her up, soon after. She got cast, and was unable to get up as she had laid down in an awkward position, she must have been stuck for a while as the walls of her stable were very scuffed. This morning we had to give her pain killers, again you may have seen her walking aimlessly around the field. She eventually laid down. The pain killers did not take to long to work, but she was not on her feet until this afternoon.

The Geese returned to the lake again today, I phoned Rye Harbour to ask what chance there was that the Geese would lay another clutch of eggs. Barry wasn’t to hopeful, as it was late in the nesting season of Geese.

We managed to get the Telescope in the observatory this afternoon. There were two workmen on the farm and I managed to convince them to help me. The Telescope is a research grade telescope that many Universities use and many others would like to have. It is going to take me a little while put all the accessories on to the telescope and get the dome automation reset. We will be broadcasting with it soon.
