Kane and Abel my Driving Horses were originally purchased to do Pairs Competition Driving, but being stabled in the London Docklands there wasn’t a lot of places to train them. That was part of the reason for them being sent to Seven Oaks in Kent. The idea was to get them ready to compete in trails driving. That idea changed when one of my Carriages, a Hotel Omnibus was completed being renovated and we decided that we should enter a Showing Class at the British Driving Societies annual show at Smith Lawn, Windsor.

Kane and Abel were taken out every day to get them ready for the Show. I had decided that the Coachman and his Wife who were training them should drive the Horses and Carriage in the Show. The Coachman was a big man, so it was decided that a friend of mine would make the Coachman’s outfits. New Collar Harness was purchased and every thing possible was done to give us a good chance of going to the Show to win the class we were entered in. But the Coachman’s outfit had not turned up on the day they were promised. The night before the Show my friend who was making the outfits turned up with two period Policeman’s Capes that he had hired as he had not had time to make the outfits. They were as much good as nothing and after frantic phone calls all over the Country we were eventually promised two outfits would be waiting at the Show Ground for us.

We arrived at the Show Ground. I just knew the day was going to be a disaster. The outfits were there as promised, trouble was they did not fit the Coachman. It was decided that I would have to Drive. I must admit the the Horses and Carriage when ready they were by far the best display in the whole Show. The only hat that I had was the Top Hat that I wore on Halloween. Then it was miles to big for me, if it hadn’t been for my ears being in the way the Top Hat would have fell all over my head.

I cant remember the year but it was a very long hot Summer and this day as no exception. With the Coachman’s Wife by my side we drove Kane and Abel to the Show Ring. The looks and comments that we got on the way made us more than confident that we had all but won our class. The Horses were sweating quite a lot not only from the heat but they had never pulled a carriage of this size before. We also realised that they had never been driven in Collar Harness, only ever driving in a Breast Harness, pulling from their breast rather than their neck, that they were now doing. Kane and Abel weren’t that put out and once in the Show Ring with the other Horses and Carriages they livened up. So much so that when we had to drive them to show what they were capable of they were a bit of a handful and quite hard to stop. Concentrating on stopping the Horses I allowed the driving whip to gently touch the rear end of Kane. It made him more than ready to bolt, but some how I managed to stop him, but he wasn’t forgiving and and double barreled kicked back hitting the board that our feet rested on. I heard the wood crack where Kane had kicked it so hard. We really should have left the ring in disgrace but the Coachman’s Wife insisted that we should continue. Needless to say we were last.

It didn’t help when the Class Judge who unbeknown to us had seen the Horses and Carriage before we went into the Show Ring whilst we were getting ready, he came as we were unharnessing the Horses, telling us that before we even had entered the Show Ring we had won the Class and it was only the kick that spoilt it. Just as bad my elder Son was to film the Show. He forgot to push the record button.

We spent the Saturday after Christmas at St. Augustine, Florida. At the Fountain of Youth, a wedding was going to take place. The bride and groom arrived in the carriage shaped like Cinderella’s pumpkin pulled by a pair of black horses. They were beautiful and so very gentle. The bride is in the red dress. Karen, Florida (USA)

Karen’s photograph of the Wedding Carriage brought back memories of when I had a small collection of Carriages myself. I got involved in them in a Carriage that I purchased in Somerset, whilst on Holiday at a Friends before we moved to Denbury. Knowing nothing about Carriages I paid at the time a lot to much for it, but it started my interest in Carriages and their history.

Although I was quite a reasonable Carriage Driver, I was always fearful that the Horses I was driving may get hurt in my care, for that reason I chose to let other Coachman drive for me.

There are some excellent Coachman to be found and I was lucky to have found two of them whilst I had Driving Horses. One in particular was a Coachman that had helped Prince Philip with his Team of Competition Horses. The Coachman had also worked driving the Harrods Horse Drawn delivery van around London.

Whilst two of my Driving Horses Kane and Abel were being trained, we had them in Livery with the Coachman in Seven Oak in Kent. They were there in the great gale when the Seven Oaks were blown down. That was not the only bad memory that I had of the area in that year, for there was a serious fire at the stables where many of the Horses died. Fortunately Kane and Abel were in a part of the barn that escaped the fire.

The fire was started deliberately by a Lad who was known to the owners of the Stables. He had a mental problem and was seeking attention. He believed that he would be a hero by saying that he had found the Stables on fire and had gone in and saved the Horses by letting them out. That was never going to happen. A Horses Stable is to a Horse a safe place. In a fire instead of running from the Stable to escape it will believe that it to be a safe place to be, and will stay until it is to late.

Here are four pictures of the squirrels in my back yard. Penny, Chicago Chicago Chicago.

Starlings in our Garden!!! Rose W’canton.

Thornton wasn’t best pleased with having the ear tag pierced into his ear. In fact he was quite put out, being very quite all night. Mind you I wouldn’t be best pleased if I had the tag pierced in to my ear. The piece that goes through the ear is quite large. Thornton has now got over the shock. As I am writing the Diary he is pushing his head into me leg trying to get my attention.

Farmers by law have for many years had to put ear tags in their animals ears so that they can be identified. Since BSE the information that the hold can identify all Farm animals in the European Union. There are hefty fines if you don’t tag you animals and you are also unable to sell or move animals without them being tagged. When sold or moved Ministry animals movement forms have to be filled in and carried with the animals. If you are stopped by the Police or Ministry when moving livestock and you have not got the movement forms you are liable for very hefty fines.

I have wasted most of today looking around the Farm and surrounding area for two missing Lambs. After the time I have spent looking and not seeing any sign of them I can only think that they have been stolen.

If they had been Sheep I would believe that they wandered off to return when they are ready. Being Lambs even being last years and weaned they are more likely to stay with the Sheep. I last counted a full count of the twelve Sheep and Lambs we have about five days ago. They do wander off of the Farm as they did last year, either in the Wood by the side of the Horse Field or in the Field on the other side of the Wood. OI looked in both of those places and a lot of other areas just in case they may have gone walk abouts further away.

I really should have ear tagged the Lambs that have our Flock numbers on. Although the tags can be removed and others replacing them it would be hardly worth the trouble. If they have been stolen I have a good idea who has taken them. If I am correct they would more than likely finish up in an abattoir in our local village, I will make a few enquiries tomorrow.

I will need to put an ear tag on Thornton when I finish tonight Diary. For sure he will not be best pleased. Fortunately Thornton Friend is still with the Flock and I will make sure that I tag the remainder of last years Lambs tomorrow.

The train on the North Yorks Moors Railway and also one of my lights outside my house. Sue. North Notts.

We have been extremely busy in the Woods that we purchased a couple of months ago. As I mentioned it was owned by Somerset County Council before we purchased. Other than clear a few trees that had fallen across footpaths they have done nothing in many decades that would benefit the Woods other than to restore a Lime Kiln.

We have taken many loads of hardwood logs from the Woods from tree that have been blown over by strong winds or that have fallen through being rotten at the roots. There is a good few years of this work to be done in Woods, let alone the thinning that the Wood is desperate for to open the canopy that will let light in the Wood to help in the natural regeneration.

The trees in the Wood are mainly Ash and Oak with come Beech and other trees that we are trying to identify. Most are old tree that are extremely tall that have grown tall to get light as there is little light in the bottom. There are some younger trees but not what you would expect so we will need to plant the Wood once we have allowed light in.

As the Wood is Ancient Woodland any work that we do other than clearing fallen trees we need to get permission to do from the Forestry Commission. We had one of their agents visit in early December. On the visit he recommended that the Wood should be assessed by a professional. The idea was that the agent was to send an application form for a grant for the assessment and a few contact details of the professionals. A month later we are still waiting. We need to get the assessment done with the recommendation before April so that we can apply for the grants needed to improve the Woods. Some of the grants available that we will need have many applications so it is important to get the applications in well before.

Elsie found the article in The Northern Echo. I reckon that they need to offer a bit more than a drink to get it back, or it may well be eaten.

We have been very busy on the Farm, leaving me very little time to do a Diary.

I just thought I would send a photo of our American Robin since it is different from your Robin which seems to be the European Robin. Ours migrate to a warmer climate in the Southern part of the Eastern United States during the winter. Their eggs in the Spring are the most beautiful blue. The female Robin’s breast is a bit duller in color than the male. When we see them here in the North or Mid-Atlantic States and hear their song very early in the morning(they are one of the first birds you hear in the morning) we know that Spring is on it’s way, although sometimes they get caught by a late season snow. They eat mostly worms and grubs and hop along the ground with their heads tilted listening for their meal. Marie.

Pictures of ducklings which have been hand reared. They were in my conservatory during the day and dare I say it – in Debs bath at night! I must say it was well dinsinfected when they were big enough to go outside! We have lived a life like this with various animals being housed until they were big enough or well enough to go back outside. Mainly hens and ducks nothing bigger :-)Merrilyn.

Here’s a picture of all 3 of my boys that we sent out as Christmas Cards this year. There’s Rasta, Kingston & Marley. Karen, Florida (USA)

Photograph to go with poem below sent in by Elsie. This is what remains of the village of Hallsands Devon, the rest fell into the sea.

A new Dawn, a new surprise,

A new beginning with every sunrise.

The beauty of life is in its myriad designs

A gift from the heavens for all mankind.

The words of wisdom have lived beyond time

To say, that hope never dies and

A billion is built with every dime

Let there be happiness all and true,

With the joy of freedom in all you do.

Let the fears be quelled by the will of divine

Let the spirit of happiness rise and shine,

with the outlook for life all sanguine,

I wish you a very happy

Two Thousand and Nine.
