Here’s some photos from Kruger,

Blue starling on an aloe plant, these birds love aloe this is one of my favourite photos. Claire

Mother cheetah with 3 cubs. Unfortunately soon after this photo was taken, dad found the cubs abandoned. We think mother had been killed probably by a hyena or lion(their greatest enemies). We took them in and hand reared them, one died soon after probably from stress the other 2 we successfully released back into the wild. Claire

The 2 male cheetah cubs just before release, we had them in a holding enclosure prior to release along with another female cheetah you can see in the back. During this time they have very minimal contact with humans and enough natural game gets through for them to learn to hunt. Claire

These were taken by my dad early one morning shortly after the 2 brothers had been realeased, last time he saw them. On a note female cheetahs are loners, male siblings stay together for life. Claire

A brown hooded Kingfisher. Quite different from Kingfishers here in England but still noticealbly a kingfisher. Claire

Female sea lions on the boardwalk in Santa Cruz . They are not in a cage but in a fenced off area (for their own safety) on the boardwalk. They get into the fenced area by climbing up a ladder like ones found in swimming pools for people to get out of the pool. Penny

Yesterday the Butcher who we get our dog meat from gave us two large bags of beef trimmings that was a little bit off colour. Last night I decided to try putting some of it on the pole in the Valley in the hope that an Owl may have come and eaten it. It didn’t work for the Owl but a Buzzard did land on the Pole this morning and ate one piece. One of this weeks Holiday Guests managed to get a photograph. He has promised to send some of his photographs that he has taken on the Farm this week for the Photo Page, including the Buzzard on the Pole. You may have noticed that I have replaced an infra-red lamp bulb in the Valley. We may see a bit more Wildlife than we have recently, Although as we still haven’t managed to cut the grass for our hay in the Valley it is long and will stop us from seeing as much as maybe we would with the grass cut. If I get time tomorrow evening I will put meat on the Pole in the evening and do a close up on the webcam after the Badger have had a feed.

Some of you have asked about Thornton. Until last night he has been living in the Farm House for a good few weeks, only wanting to be a Sheep of a daytime. Last night he was on the drive with the rest of the Sheep and started to walk towards the Farm House as if coming in for the night. For some reason he changed his mind and turned back and stayed with the Sheep for the night. He would normally be waiting outside the kitchen door in the morning for his feed. He didn’t bother this morning. It wasn’t until this evening that we saw him, and that was because as we hadn’t seen him all day we went looking. When we found him we could see he had decided to stay out again tonight. It could well be that some of the Ewes are in season. Not that he is able to mate with them.

I had hoped that the new webcam would have been going by now. Not that you will be missing anything to much. There is still over three weeks to go before what will be able to be seen can be seen in the right conditions.

Translation of the Beaver Webpage by Jack. I will put another paragraph on tomorrow

Beaver family on-line

We bring you more of our on-line transfer of the life of protected fauna of our nature. In the past year have had on our website the opportunity to monitor the direct transfer of nesting and rearing of young owls burnt in a wild couple this kind. The project met with unexpected public response, not only in the Czech Republic and abroad, therefore, we would like to continue in similar transfers. This year we wanted to live closer to the European beaver (Castor fiber), which is in our nature returned only recently, and whose way of life, coupled with the ability of a significant environmental influence is, unfortunately, under pressure from the media mostly negative public perception. Come with us to learn more about Beaver and find that in fact are completely other than that you know, for example, from the commercials of one not listed insurance …

The picture you can follow the beaver family dwelling on the selected site in Moravia. Beavers are active primarily in the dusk beginning, because the camera is equipped with noktoviz

The drive to collect the Kune Kune was about 50 miles. We must have pasted within minute from where Julia and Chris live. If we had her address we may have popped in for a cup of tea. I don’t think they would have enjoyed that visit much, with the way I was ranting.

The Pigs are kept in a large Garden, not what we had expected. Two Gilts one having a litter of Piglets from which our male was coming from and the Female that we were having.

After doing the Ministry paperwork we went to get our Female. She was not what I had imagined, she was a lot bigger than I had thought that she was going to be. She would have been the size of a domestic Pig, larger than the Wild Boar that we had once kept. The size really didn’t matter that much, it was the temperament of the animal that we were interested in, and she was very kind and interested in people.

It was easy to get her to walk to our trailer, but once there it was obvious that we were going to be a problem to load her on to it unless she was prepared to get on to the trailer herself as she was far to heavy to pick up. For sure she wasn’t going to load herself. If I had of known that she was going to be as big as she was I would have taken our Horse Trailer that the Pig could have walked on to by her self. The back is very close to the ground and it has a ramp, so loading her would have been easy.

The trailer we had taken was a box trailer that is about 18″ from the ground. With the bribe of an apple the Pig got her front feet on the trailer, but was down again before we had a chance to lift her back end on. The next attempt was to lift the trailer so that the back was on the ground. Again with a bribe of the apple she managed to get half way on. The idea was then to push the front of the trailer down whilst giving the pig a push. That didn’t work for she slipped off as we pushed the trailer down. The final attempt was up a ramp with her favorite food, a coleslaw sandwich. She ate the sandwich but wouldn’t get on the trailer. So home we came minus a Pig.

We are off in the morning to collect the two Kune Kune Pigs. It is not that far away about 50 miles. Mind you I cant stand driving. To be honest I find it as boring as watching paint dry. I wont be able to drive that fast as we are taking a small trailer to collect the older female in. The Piglet will travel in a box on the back seat.

We have made a pen for them in the main barn out of gates. They will stay in that for a week or so before we let them be free range. The Female and Piglet know each other so we don’t expect to have any problems with them getting on with each other. The Female we are told is exceptionally friendly. The only problem that we may have is with Tass. She is a bit of a hunter and when Jade our Springer was alive they once killed one of our Wild Boar Piglets so we will need to watch her very carefully. We expected Tass to be a bit of a problem with the Geese but she has not taken any notice of them at all. Although that could be that she a Kye have found a Rabbit nest a few metres from the Farm House door. Tass keeps bringing one of the baby Rabbits to the door to show us. She doesn’t hurt them and puts them down as soon as she is told. The squealing the babies make you would think she was killing them. We thought that the Mother would have moved the babies away but she doesn’t take any notice, even when the babies are put back in the nest.

This was a sunny corner of our pond today(19/03/09)Rose W’canton

A Helicopter that was checking the power line close to the Farm decided instead of following the power line route it would circle over the Farm. It was so low that it caused the Horses that were quite close to the line to panic. By circling the Farm it went over the Reindeer Field that also caused the Reindeer to panic, making two of them to run straight through the Hedge. One has returned but would not eat when I took their food up to the Field for them. The other one has still not returned.

This is not the first time that the Electricity Companies Helicopters have caused this type of problem. It happened a month ago. I was assured when I complained by the Pilot that our post code would be logged that would stop any recurrence. Quite obviously that didn’t work. The Pilot that I spoke too today told me that the was a computer glitch that was being sorted out today, It had caused all the no fly areas not to be found on their computers.

When we had Ostrich we had the same problem. Unfortunately one of our Female Ostrich ran into a post and killed herself. The other Female Ostriches did not lay for nearly three months after that incident. Again we were assured that the Helicopters would never fly above the Farm.

Vicky’s boy friend David came down to join her on her stay at Denbury yesterday. He has made a new tray for the bird feeders that kept on falling to one side. It is a bit more secure now that he has fitted it than my one was. He has also made a new obstacle for the Squirrel obstacle course

Photo of the Pine Marten I took the other night. Picture not very good as it was taken from the computer. It was lovely to see. Merrilyn.

I take it no one saw the three Roe Deer in the Valley last night. I put them on all of the Denbury Farm webcam pages. The Deer have been feeding in the Valley for the past four days at least. I could not tell if they were male or female. If they are female they will give birth in about six to eight weeks time. Although they are more than likely to be young males.

Not to sure what the Geese are up to. They are returning to the Lake early in the morning. Some times as early as 4.30am. I know because they wake me. They leave normally before 9.am Now and then they will inspect the Island before flying away. They had better make up their mind if they are going to nest on the Island before another pair do. A pair of Swans looked as if they might have landed on the Lake yesterday. They flew around in circles above the Lake a few time but decided not to land. Every time we have had Swans land on the Lake there have been Geese on as well who chase the Swans off. As much as I like the Geese it would be good for Swans to nest. There would also be a greater chance of Cygnet surviving with the aggressions Swans show when threatened.

I just thought I would send a photo of our American Robin since it is different from your Robin which seems to be the European Robin. Ours migrate to a warmer climate in the Southern part of the Eastern United States during the winter. Their eggs in the Spring are the most beautiful blue. The female Robin’s breast is a bit duller in color than the male. When we see them here in the North or Mid-Atlantic States and hear their song very early in the morning(they are one of the first birds you hear in the morning) we know that Spring is on it’s way, although sometimes they get caught by a late season snow. They eat mostly worms and grubs and hop along the ground with their heads tilted listening for their meal. Marie.

I believe that the Otter may have tried to get onto the Lake on Sunday night. The electric wire on the stream side had been disturbed as if it had tried to get through. It is not a very large shock. just enough for any thing that touches to think about not wanting to touch it again. It should not stop the Otter from returning to the area of the Lake but it will remember the wire when it sees it and will not cross it.

Unfortunately electric fencers do stop other animals. We can see by Badger tracks that they use the Lake to drink from, As Badgers have short legs they will be unable to get across the wire without touching it, although it is only about twelve inches from the ground. The Fox would naturally jump the low wire. We walked around the Lake to show one of our Holiday Guests the Lake. Without realising Thornton was following us and he touched the wire. He only ran a few yards back, but I can tell you he wasn’t best pleased. We will need to fix a permanent fence with a gate to protect the Lakes. There is a little Leat Pond that water flows into the Lake from that the Badgers will be able too use.

The Female Reindeer’s damage around her mouth looks a lot better today. She is still eating and drinking well but the scouring has not stopped. As soon as it does we will be able to return her and the Female that is keeping her company back to the Reindeer Field.
