Autumn in the woods at Rufford country Park.

Not an exotic location but I woke up to the most beautiful Sunrise.

And then a few days later a lovely Sunset. From Judy.

We weaned Socks and Solo from Emmi and Lady today. Not something we like doing and we do try to leave it for as long as we can. But unfortunately the day has to come. For the past few days I had noticed Emmi trying to stop Socks from suckling by lifting her hind leg to push him away. When Mares start to do that there is always a chance that the Foal will get a kick.

We normally stable both the Mares and the Foals when we wean. This year we have only stabled the Foals, letting the Mares back out into the Horse Field. The Mares didn’t realise the Foals had not followed them to the Field until a good quarter of an hour after. It will take a few days for both the Mares and Foals to get through the ordeal, In that time they will be calling to each other throughout. I will put the two Foals on the webcams so that you can see them.

The Badgers are not leaving the Sett for the feed we leave out as much as normal. It is cold when the Sun goes down so they are only venturing out when they need to and because they know that there is food for them without having to venture far from the warmth of their home.

If it is the Fountain in the middle of Lake Geneva Mary was asking about. No it wasn’t working. This trip was the latest in the year that I have visited Geneva, it has always been working on other visits.

The Barn Owl Trust have been monitoring a Barn Owl nest site in Cornwall, since October last year, so that this year we could broadcast a nesting site. Barn Owls have nested in a nest box supplied by the Trust in a Barn at the location for a number of years. They have used one Barn to nest in during the nesting season and another close by during the Autumn and Winter.

A new bespoke nest box was constructed by the Trust fitted with an infra red camera, to give the best possible views inside the new nest box. All the wiring and the new nest box were installed into the nesting barn in the Autumn of last year, so that the Barn Owls could hopefully get use to seeing it and hopefully accept it for this years nesting.

The was always the chance that the Barn Owls would not use the new nest box. I don’t know about the Barn Owl Trust, but I was getting a little concerned that they may not like the new box and decide go else where to nest. Last week I got a phone call from the Trust telling me that the Barn Owls had started to use the the new nest box and were seen mating.

On Tuesday next we are hoping to start broadcasting from the nest site on our internal system to make sure that all is working as it should. If it is we should be live on the website within a week.

There will be two cameras at the nest site location. One in the nest box and one outside so that we can see the Barn Owls going back and forward to feed the Owlets when they hatch. A lot of work has gone in to this new project by the Barn Owl Trust and the owner of the property that the webcam will be broadcasting from. As long as all goes as it promises to be a great new webcam.

With the Clocks going forward tonight…

With the Clocks going forward tonight, the Badgers will be fed at about 8.pm tomorrow

The Blackthorn trees started to flower today, for me a sure sign that spring is on its way. The trees delicate white flowers bring the hedgerows alive, after the long winter. Although the flowers last for a very short period, they are a delight, on dropping they leave for a short time, a white carpet on the ground.

The tree has had many uses over time, the flowers and autumn berries were said to have medicinal uses, the flowers as well as other uses, was said to make a pick you up tonic, the autumn berries were used for tummy upsets, with lots of preparation a syrup could be made for jams etc.

The wood was used for walking sticks, pegs and rake teeth. Because of its medicinal uses the tree was also associated with Black Magic. The main use on farms now is that it helps make, with other trees and shrubs, stock proof hedging to stop you animals from straying.

I am still having to bottle feed the remaining twin lamb. Although the Ewe has milk, she is reluctant to get up when the lamb needs it. The lamb tries to get to the udder when the Ewe is laying down, pushing as hard as it can to get in between the Ewes hind leg and belly. The Ewe just wont help her, although this evening when they came in, the lamb seemed to have a full belly, so it may have got more milk today.

The lamb knows when I am going to feed it. when it sees me it runs towards me bleating. Quite obviously it wants the feed, but it does not take the bottle very well, it tries to suck it from the side, it doesnt seem to get a lot that way. I struggle with it to make it take it properly, when it does it gets a full feed.

I am not convinced that the lamb will survive, there is a good chance that it did not get all the colostrum that it should have, when born. It had an infection to its upper eye lid, it was not very pleasant getting it sorted out. It looks a lot better now and should heal.
