Photos taken in our local park, Edwards Gardens, which is City owned. The flowers and bushes in this park are beautiful but still early for many flowers here.

The Bridal Bridge – brides like to have their photos taken here. This is a new bridge since in the winter of 97, the Bridal Bridge along with others in the park, and the river edges, were washed away after a massive storm. Repairs are ongoing – will cost millions of dollars to put as it was.

A yellow Magnolia tree – they say this one will grow to 25 feet tall.

2 x Photograps of Faith to go wioth the artical below thay was sent in by Elsie.

Thisis ‘Faith’
This dog was born on Christmas Eve in the year 2002. He was born with 3 Legs – 2 healthy hind legs and 1 abnormal front leg which needed to be amputated. He of course could not walk when he was born. Even his Mother did not want him.

His first owner also did not think that he could survive. Therefore, he as thinking of ‘putting him to sleep’.

By this time, his present owner, Jude Stringfellow, met him and wanted to take care of him. She was determined to teach and train this dog to walk by himself. Therefore she named him ‘Faith’.

In the beginning, she put Faith on a surfing board to let him feel the Movements.
Later she used peanut butter on a spoon as a lure and reward for him to stand up and jump around.
Even the other dog at home also helped encourage him to walk. Amazingly, only after 6 months, like a miracle, Faith learned to balance on his 2 hind legs and jumped to move forward.
After further training in the snow, he now can walk like a human being. Faith loves to walk around now. No matter where he goes, he just attracts All the people around him.
He is now becoming famous on the international scene. He has appeared on various newspapers and TVshows.
There is even one book entitled ‘With a little faith’ being published about him. He was even considered to appear in one of Harry Potter Movies.

His present owner Jude Stringfellew has given up her teaching post and plans to take him around the world to preach that even without a perfect body, one can have a perfect soul’. In life there are always undesirable things. Perhaps one will feel better If one changes the point of view from another direction. I hope this message will bring fresh new ways of thinking to everyone and that everyone can appreciate and be thankful for each beautiful day that Follows.
Faith is the continual demonstration of the
strength of Life.

Wheres your Chickens Mister, Wheres your Chickens asked the Son of our new Holiday Guests that arrived today. We don’t have Chickens I replied. All Farms have Chickens Mister. Sorry we haven’t got any. Mum they ain’t got Chickens he screamed out. 6 year old Andrew looks as if he is going to be a handful.

Mind you he has put an idea in our minds that maybe it would be nice to have a few Chickens to supply us and maybe our Holiday Guests with Free Range Eggs. We did have Chickens when we first came to Denbury. We got them from a Battery Farm. They where quit a state when we collected them from the Farm. The very next day they produced eggs and did so for a long time. Cant even remember what happened to them. We also had a two Chickens, a Cockerel and some Silkies about ten years ago. Cant remember the name of Chickens they where, maybe Splash Orpingtons. They were large white Chickens with a black fleck. I remember what happened to them. Mr.Fox had them one afternoon.

We still have a Chicken Hutch that I made when we had the last Chickens. If we do decide to get a few, we will put the Hutch near the Cottages so that the Children who visit Denbury can get involved with feeding the Chicken and collecting the eggs. There is an Auction for Pure Bred Poultry this Saturday at our local Livestock Market. To late for Andrew.

One of last years Lamb went missing again yesterday. I managed to convince Diane, Vicky and David that they would enjoy finding him. There was also a Ewe missing this morning. The way that the Ewes udder were looking when I looked at them yesterday I would not have been surprised if they had found her with Lambs. As it happens the Ewe was no where to be seen. I should think that she has hidden herself away to Lamb. If she doesn’t turn up in the morning I will need to find her.

As for the Lamb, he was found with a branch through his horns as I had found him last week. The branch was making it impossible for him to move. We have had a lot of Sheep and Lambs with horns who have never been caught up. This Lamb is making it a habit. We will need to keep watch on him, expecting that he is caught up when he is missing.

I have worked it out that the first Reindeer to Calf should do so in just over two weeks time. One of the Reindeer that was frightened by the Helicopter is not eating the amount of feed that the other two are eating, and she seems to have lost a bit of weight. The Veterinary said that this was a possibility and that she may abort the Calf, although she does still look pregnant. It wont be long until we find out.

For about six weeks Gypsy has been unwell. Most of the time she was alright, but some mornings we would go to feed the Horses and she would be laid out flat on the floor. Some times she would get up when she saw that her feed was on its way. On other occasions we would need to get her up. Once she was up she was fine, eating, drinking and moving as we would expect. The problem we had was that it was intermittent. The Veterinary looked at her when it first started and blood test showed nothing was wrong, so there really wasn’t any thing we could treat her for.

For the past two week Gypsy was getting worse. She was laying stretched out flat more often. At other times she was fine. She was also drinking and urinating more than normal. I started to have suspicion that it was a liver problem. If it were an infection it would be constant. It wasn’t, that indicated that there was probably liver damage.

With animals you really do agonise about what to do when they are ill. They are unable to tell you of pain. You need to watch if their routine alters, and see if their actions show if they are experiencing any pain. You must never consider their welfare against their value. At times you need to take action that you know is right. It is easy to allow a Veterinary to treat sick animals, but again are you allowing it for the animal benefit or your own. For it is easy to believe that prolonging an animals life is benefiting the animal, when it is making you feel good. I should think some of you have had that experience.

This morning when wee went to feed Gypsy was down again. We needed to make her get up. That was not easy for her and took three attempts. When she was up she was not interested in her food, just picking at it and taking small sips of water. I had to make a decision on if I get the Veterinary in or have her put to sleep. It wasn’t a hard decision. I knew that her illness was causing he pain and I was convinced that she had liver damage. I also knew that no Veterinary attention was going to make her well. All it would do was to cause Gypsy to suffer for longer. Gypsy was put to sleep this morning.

I asked for a report on Gypsy’s liver. That was normal, but one of her kidney was severely damaged. The cause being by a kick from Willow. In the Winter we keep youngsters stabled together in large gated areas in our main barn. Willow gets very excited at feed times, kicking her legs out and bucking. There is no malice in it, just sheer excitement. She must have accidentally kicked Gypsy.

Little Grebe visit our Lake every year but only in the Winter and early Spring. Don’t know why but we rarely see them in the Summer months. I have never seen them land or take off from the Lake, they are just there or not. It could be that the small Fish that they dive for are easier to catch in the Winter in our Lake than from where they came from.

These past few weeks have been the longest cold period that I can remember since we have lived at Denbury. It has been a lot colder, so cold one year that the Lake froze over. We also had a lot of snow that year. The snow started to thaw, just as it turned to water it froze over again making our driveway a sheet of ice. On a small incline even our Land Rover that we had at the time struggled. I believe that the only way that I managed to get out was to reverse up the incline.

I don’t really mind the cold as long as it is not wet with it. Working on the farm in the cold and wet is miserable and the animals don’t like it either. Prolonged cold spells I have been told helps to get rid of Rats and there are a few big ones around the Badgers Sett. I really need to put poison around the Sett area, but after seeing a Tawny Owl take a Rat few weeks back I cant as we are liable to kill an Owl if it eats a poisoned Rat.

With the clocks going back tonight, as long as I don’t forget I will be feeding the Badgers at 5.20pm. To the Badgers it will be feed time as usual. Why we continually year after year have to suffer disruption that the clock changes cause I cannot understand. I would like most others prefer it to stay lighter at night. Just for the amount of power it would save, you would think that some politician would use a private members bill to have it altered if one is needed at all that is.

The two Reindeer from Pennywell Farm that are here to be mated by Padfoot wont allow our Reindeer to feed. I would have expected a little bickering but it is a bit full on. For two days our females have not had any feed at all. Tonight I have needed to go in the Reindeer field so that the feed is had by all. Fortunately Padfoot is behaving himself, but keeping the two separated I have to be in between Padfoot and the two females, far away from the gate to be in an uncomfortable place if Padfoot did decide that I was not welcome in his domain. My being in the Field does cause another problem as two of our females are particularly friendly, so much so that when I initially go into the Field they prefer to inspect me than eat the feed that I am protecting for them.
