ALL TAKEN AT THE TROPICAL BUTTERLY HOUSE NEAR WORKSOP. LYNNE.

Tonight and yesterdays photo page is only able to happen because of Lynne and Penny. There are very few left.

As those who have visited Denbury know our Sheep to the annoyance of our Neighbours tend to be free range. We lost some weeks back two Lambs that we believe have been rustled, and they still haven’t been found. Mind you for getting on for a week or more we have not seen the rest of the Sheep. We normally see them in the Woods most days so I was concerned that they may have been stolen. This morning I had a drive around the Lanes in the hope that I may see them in the fields on the opposite of the left hand Woods. They were nowhere to be seen although there were plenty of their droppings in one of the Fields.

When I went to feed the Reindeer this evening, one Reindeer, as two of them decided to go walk abouts this morning and were on the Lane on the other side of our drive gates. When we went to try to get them back on the Farm they decided to run in the direction that we would not want them to go. At the end of the Lane there are two many directions for them to go and an open common that would have been nearly impossible to catch them if they reached it. They did, and whoopee that went going into a trot. It seemed that it was going to be an absolute disaster. I could see that they were going to get out of sight and finish up making their way to the main road and getting run over. If not that finish up on the Quantock Hill.

I called out to them in the hope that one of the two Reindeer who was friendly would come to me. Both of the Reindeer stopped on hearing my call and the friendly one came towards me. If she came close to me I would grab hold of her. She wasen’t that stupid, just as was nearly in grabbing distance the other one started to run again. I had lost my chance but I had managed to get in front of them. It made them turn into the wrong direction but a car made them turn again running in the direction of the Lane, with luck they turned down the Lane. At the entrance to the Farm and our neighbours they chose our neighbours entrance, with their gate closed the Reindeer were secure.

Back to feeding the remaining Reindeer. On the way to feed it I heard Thornton calling out in distress. He was caught up in some bramble. I soon released him and on continuing to the Reindeer Field I noticed the Sheep in the Horse Field looking in the direction of Thornton. Thornton’s distress calls had been heard by the Sheep and they were making their was to the calls. At least I knew they were about.

On my way back from feeding the Badgers one of the missing Reindeer was in the Horse Field. With a bit of coaxing with a bucket of feed we got it back to the Reindeer Field and the other missing Reindeer was waiting for it.

I am out of wildlife/nature shots, but here are a bunch of pictures of our cats. The calico with the black nose is Gatto, the calico with the pink nose is Chat, and the black cat is, well, Blackie. The tuxedo cat was our beloved Figaro, who passed on 2 years ago, but he was such a ham for the camera. Penny Chicago Chicago Chicago.

Rustlers warned stolen sheep may be poisonous.

Sent in by Elsie.

RUSTLERS who butchered four pregnant sheep in a field were last night warned the meat could pose a health hazard.

The thieves left a bloody scene and the bodies of four unborn lambs at the field on the outskirts of Staindrop, near Barnard Castle, County Durham.

Police believe the sheep will be sold on the black market as meat, but have warned that the sheep had last week been given worming treatment, and the flesh contains potentially dangerous levels of worming chemicals that could cause illness if eaten.

Obituary

London Times

An Obituary printed in the London Times……… Interesting and sadly
rather true.

‘Today we mourn the passing of a beloved old friend, Common Sense, who
has been with us for many years. No one knows for sure how old he was,
since his birth records were long ago lost in bureaucratic red tape..
He will be remembered as having cultivated such valuable lessons as:

Knowing when to come in out of the rain; why the early bird gets the
worm; Life isn’t always fair; and maybe it was my fault.

Common Sense lived by simple, sound financial policies (don’t spend
more than you can earn) and reliable strategies (adults, not children,
are in charge).

His health began to deteriorate rapidly when well-intentioned but
overbearing regulations were set in place. Reports of a 6-year-old boy
charged with sexual harassment for kissing a classmate; teens
suspended from school for using mouth wash after lunch; and a teacher
fired for reprimanding an unruly student, only worsened his condition.

Common Sense lost ground when parents attacked teachers for doing the
job that they themselves had failed to do in disciplining their unruly
children.

It declined even further when schools were required to get parental
consent to administer sun lotion or an Aspirin to a student; but could
not inform parents when a student became pregnant and wanted to have
an abortion.

Common Sense lost the will to live as the churches became businesses;
and criminals received better treatment than their victims. Common
Sense took a beating when you couldn’t defend yourself from a burglar
in your own home and the burglar could sue you for assault.

Common Sense finally gave up the will to live, after a woman failed to
realize that a steaming cup of coffee was hot. She spilled a little in
her lap, and was promptly awarded a huge settlement .

Common Sense was preceded in death, by his parents, Truth and Trust

His wife, Discretion, his daughter, Responsibility, his son, Reason

He is survived by his 4 stepbrothers; I Know My Rights

I Want It Now; Someone Else Is To Blame; I’m A Victim

Not many attended his funeral because so few realized he was gone.

If you still remember him, pass this on. If not, join the majority and do
nothing.

We bated for rats the lower Badger feeding area two nights ago. It normally take a few days for the rats to take the bate. On checking it this evening all of the poison had gone and a large amount of the plastic container that the poison was in. There seems fewer rats in that area tonight. Some of the rats from the main Badger feeding will take the bate from where it is now as it is only 15m away. Within a couple of days we will bate the main area.

The Griffon Vulture webcam was a disaster last year. Simon the person who contacted us and set the location up had not made sure that every thing that was needed was in place or possible, and guess what, it wasn’t. we eventually got most of the equipment that we sent Simon returned to us, with the wireless equipment and camera that was on the Mountain still outstanding as the weather was to bad to climb to get it. As we may need a wireless connection for another webcam I asked Simon for the outstanding equipment to be returned. He told me that part of the mountain above the nesting site that the equipment was located on had fallen onto the equipment and it had gone. I wouldn’t have minded but he added that he had told me that the location was unstable and that could have been the outcome. I would never tell any person to risk loosing very expensive broadcasting equipment.

We are sending a new camera to Peter at Indian River Bay, Delaware this week for the Osprey webcam. It is a Pan Tilt and Zoom camera that Peter will put on the roof of his house that is at the most 200m from the nest. The new camera will be able to show the nest very close. The Osprey will be returning to both the Lock and Indian River Bay during February.

Sorry that the Forum was not updated until this evening.

About midnight last night when I checked the webcams there was a Deer laying down by the stream in the Valley. The way it was laying down I could not be sure what type of Deer it was but i reckon it was a Roe Deer. It was the first Deer that I have seen on the webcams for a good few months. We can see that there are Deer visiting the Valley by their foot prints that we regularly see.

It or another Deer going by the Deer foot prints I found when I went to feed the Badger, had made its way to the gate in the background of the Badger feeding area. It may well have jumped the gate to where the Badgers feed. On a couple of occasions Deer were were seen at the Badger feeding area last year.

I see on the Forum that some of you have Snowdrops out. We have had them open for a week. What I want to see is the Daffodils out. They are a great site but better still we know that we are in Spring.

We were hoping to do a webcam with the Crown Estates in Scotland. Unfortunately it never happened and the equipment that we sent to them is being returned next week. In my telephone conversation with the Ranger at the location and my first contact, who with a promotion has moved to the Head Office we got talking about the possibility of doing a Golden Eagle. This year a platform is to be erected to encourage a nest site. It wont be this year that the Eagle will nest, if at all. If and when it does happen we will install a webcam at the location. The Ranger is to keep me updated with the site and I will let you know of any thing that happens.

Most years our drive is covered with thousands of Frog making their way to the Lakes to spawn. It normally happens from the middle of February into March. It is a nightmare trying to get in and out of the Farm as if we are not careful and move the Frogs out of the way some will get run over. Now that we have the gates installed at the entrance of the drive not so many will die from uninvited vehicles. With the camera that we installed last year down the drive overlooking the Lake and Reindeer Field we will be able to use it to see the Frogs.
