Pics from when I spent a few days with my friend in devon in october, this is the view from her back garden, the next one was a stall at the German Christmas market. Sarah.

View from Ullapool, looking towards the Summer Isles. Janice of Leeds.

There was a thin layer of ice on the Pond next to the Lake this morning. It has been very cold at Denbury for some weeks and I would have thought that we would have had a lot more than there has been. For the past two nights it has been bitter. Today up to late afternoon it was still very cold, but now it has warmed up and there is a little bit of drizzle. As long as it doesn’t rain we will be happy. We don’t really mind how cold it is as long as there is no rain.

The photographs below and more were sent to me as possible webcam site by Christopher Quigley. We never heard back from him.

We still have lots of photograph to put on the Photo Page, some sent in as long as three weeks back.

Arnie and Thornton are well over there illness’s. Arnie is coming in at night at a trot, something he had lost for a few weeks.

As for Thornton he seem to have got a new life and is now as good as the boss of Tass and Kye. He wont stand any nonsense from them and puts his head down to let them know that they will get a butt. On walks with Tass and Kye it is Thornton who instigates any play, and especially with Tass. They play very well, with Thornton playing very much like a Dog. As long as Thornton is in earshot, all that needs to be said to Tass and Kye are you coming for a walk and Thornton appears ready to go as well.

The Sheep came back today with Ewy in the flock. When we get the Sheep into Lamb it will be interesting to see if Ewy comes in with them.

Sorry that we gave you short notice about the Scottish Wild Cat Talk that is Live tonight. Hopefully it will be recorded and we will show it again.

A view of Toronto from a boat in the lake. Easily recognizable are the CN Tower and the dome where the Blue Jays play. Rosie’s Mum in Toronto

Oscar the Peregrine, Bubo the Owl, Eric a Red Tailed Hawk and Seamus, a Barn Owl. These great birds live at a Peregrine bird Federation sanctuary near Toronto. These birds are now used for educational purposes by the Federation. Rosie’s Mum in Toronto.

We saw our first Roe Deer in over a couple of Months this Morning. It was very close to the Reindeer Field behind where we make our Horse manure pile and the Quarry Face. There have been Deer foot prints down the Valley but we haven’t seen any on the webcams.

Ewy at last seems to have made her way back to the Flock. No Horses are fed in the Horse Field at this time of the year, so there wasn’t a lot for her to hang around for. Mind you we haven’t seen the Sheep for a couple of days, they could well have gone into the Field on the other side of the Wood on the right hand side of the Valley.

Karen caught sight of the new gates we have installed. They have got to be painted when we get time. We are very pleased with them and we have noticed a difference with no more uninvited visitors coming down the Drive. We are not unsociable people, but we were getting people driving down our 300m drive to ask the way. Even with a Denbury Farm sign at the top of the Drive people were coming down to a different Farm. There was also a concern of whom the people were coming to the Farm. Now only those people with the security code, or who have fobs can get in. The Gates make the Farm a little more secure for both the Animals and those living on or who are on Holiday at Denbury. When they are painted I will take a photograph for the Photo Page.

I recently had a weekend away at Coombe Abbey hotel which is a fantastic old ex-Cistercian Monastery in Binley set in 500 acres of parkland it really is a fantastic building that you would never guess is now a hotel.

We have a Robin that is visiting us in our kitchen when ever we leave the kitchen door open. The visits started some weeks back when it came in and tried to make its exit through a closed kitchen window, when it all but knocked its self out. It did the same for a few days when we were sure that it would kill its self. Now when we leave the doore open we very often find the Robin sitting on one of the plants on the window ledge.

Another visitor that we have had is a Blackbird that we see fly off from the plants area in the porch outside the kitchen door. It is not now and then but every time that we open the door. It is as if it is a nesting site. Of course it could well be that it has found an area where it is able to keep warm. The Autumn and Winter is always a good time to put up nesting boxes, very often a bird will use them for shelter in these months and go on to nest in them in the Spring. Last years the way that a pair of Blackbirds were acting I was sure that they would have nested in the Winter. Blackbirds have been known to do so.

I have been leaving a webcam on the Lake in the hope of seeing the Kingfisher again. I have been busy today so I haven’t looked at it a lot. With the sun shining today as it was when it was perched on the tree a couple of days ago, there must have been a good chance of it being seen today. One of the biggest disappointments of this year was not seeing the Kingfisher on the webcams as we did the previous year. The Kingfishers definitely nested this year but it didn’t fish from the branch that we put in the year before. Most days that we went to the Lake we would see them darting about. Many of our Holiday Guests saw them especially those fishing the Lake. One Kingfisher even landed on a fishing rod with the fisherman holding on to the other end. The are to many spots that the Kingfisher can perch to fish from that makes it difficult to pinpoint once they decide to move from their usual perches. We have two pan tilt and zoom cameras on the lake now, but unfortunately catching them on the cameras has not been very successful this year as it was the years before.

We still have lots of photographs left to go on the Photo Page from the middle of the month, None have been forgotten.

Atlantic Grey Seals laid out on the island of Yell in the Shetland Islands.Lindsay.

A good surfing sea at Woolacombe,North Devon.Lindsay.

My Favorite Canada geese. Karen Stoke.

Little Grebe visit our Lake every year but only in the Winter and early Spring. Don’t know why but we rarely see them in the Summer months. I have never seen them land or take off from the Lake, they are just there or not. It could be that the small Fish that they dive for are easier to catch in the Winter in our Lake than from where they came from.

These past few weeks have been the longest cold period that I can remember since we have lived at Denbury. It has been a lot colder, so cold one year that the Lake froze over. We also had a lot of snow that year. The snow started to thaw, just as it turned to water it froze over again making our driveway a sheet of ice. On a small incline even our Land Rover that we had at the time struggled. I believe that the only way that I managed to get out was to reverse up the incline.

I don’t really mind the cold as long as it is not wet with it. Working on the farm in the cold and wet is miserable and the animals don’t like it either. Prolonged cold spells I have been told helps to get rid of Rats and there are a few big ones around the Badgers Sett. I really need to put poison around the Sett area, but after seeing a Tawny Owl take a Rat few weeks back I cant as we are liable to kill an Owl if it eats a poisoned Rat.

As I was feeding the Horses this morning a pair of Geese flew in along the Valley and landed on the Lake. For over two weeks one Gander has been visiting on and off. We never did find any signs of the last pair of Geese who nested and disappeared without a trace, it could well be that this is that pair. This pair have also used the same places on the bank of the Lake, that could also be of course that they are the easiest places to land.

I had decided that I would try to stop any Geese from nesting on the Lake next year, but now that I have electric fenced to stop the Otter from taking the Fish from the Lake, it will quite easy to put extra strands of wire on the posts to stop the Fox that is of course if it was a Fox that had taken the Geese and Gosling’s. After seeing the Otter in the Valley making its way in the direction of the Lake, it could have been an Otter that had taken them.

It has been busy on the lake today, the sun seems to have brought life to it. As well as the Geese’s there were a pair of Little Grebe, a few pair of Mallards and Coot. But best of all and the first time that I have seen one in the Winter on the Lake was a Kingfisher. It was perched on a branch of a tree that we planted on the side of the Lake a few years back. As the tree has got bigger some the branches have started to hang over the Lake making them a good vantage spot for the Kingfisher to dive from. I cant imagine that it managed to catch any Fish today, most of the Fish will be at the bottom of the Lake as the water is so cold. Some Kingfishers do move to different locations during the Winter. Those on our Lake must still be here.
