It is very rarely that those fishing at Denbury don’t respect the Wildlife and the animals. Probably only two that I can remember. One was last year and the other just over the past week or so. That person allowed one of the Black Swans to swallow a fishing hook and did not tell us that it had happened. Since the last time that it happened we have rules about fishing and the Swans. Nothing that would cause those fishing any disturbance, but would stop the Swans from getting injured. The worst part was that who ever it was did not tell us.

I only realised yesterday afternoon when I saw a swelling at the top of the Swans neck. A first I thought that it was the original Swan and that the injury had started to get worse. It was quite easy to catch it. This time we put a net right across the lake and walked it to one end trapping the Swan in the reed, it was then easy to catch it with a very large fishing landing net. Vicky I noticed on the Forum had seen me rowing trying to get the Swan up on end of the Lake.

I believe it is a Pen that is injured. We decided that we would send the Swan to the Swan Sanctuary at Shepperton, Middlesex on the out skirts of London. They have a great deal of experience with this type of injury. See their website www.swanuk.org.uk The Swan Sanctuary is a charity. They do not charge for any medical care. We will donate what we would have needed to have paid to a Veterinary. By the time we had caught the Swan it was getting very late but their volunteers met me half way from Dorset where the Pen spent last before being taken to the Sanctuary this morning.

8.55pm. Just spoke to the Swan Sanctuary. The Pen has been operated on and at the moment all is looking OK.

I did tell you that the new camera would be working by the beginning of September. But as it is not I will tell you about it on Tuesday. It could have been today but I thought that you wouldn’t mind waiting another couple of days.

We never saw them leave but we heard the honking of the Geese fade in the distance as they left the Lake this afternoon. They may return before it gets dark, but it is the first time for a long while that the Geese have honked.

It has been a lot of worry making sure that the Geese were safe from the day the Goslings hatched. But I must admit going to the Lake and the Geese not being there is going to be strange. The electric fence worked and kept the predators away. We were never sure what had taken the Geese in previous year but it was very sad seeing them disappear day by day. Twice when the Ganders were taken it was very sad. It would have been easy for them to fly away when his family were threatened, but they stand there ground when the only outcome was them dying. There was no way that I was going to let it happen this year. Without exception every night around midnight I went to the Lake to check that the electric fencer was working.

I was never sure what had taken the Geese in previous years, but I am sure the splash I heard the other night was an Otter jumping into the Stream when I disturbed it. I know that the Gander that was taken last year was a Fox by from where it had attacked and taken the dead Gander.

I am told that the Geese that hatched on the Lake should return. We will never know but it is a nice thought.

I took this trying to catch a Squirrel its any ones guess where it is as I had the dogs leads on my foot how they didn’t drag me I will never know cause Fred spotted one on the ground a little way away and tried to get to it. Karen Stoke.

This is the same shot I took and sent in of the daffs up the stables on one of the lanes I said I would take one when they opened up more. Karen Stoke.

These crocus are from my next door neighbours Arthur, Karen Stoke.

It looks as if the Goose are getting her nest ready to start laying her eggs. For the past few days she has spent a little time on the Island. Today she was on the Island for a good few hours placing nest material in one place. If she lays where the nest has been made we will have a very good view of her sitting her eggs.

Our free range Sheep have decided to come back to Denbury. For a time I thought that I would not see them again after the last two went missing. The ten are back with all of the Ewes looking very pregnant. Even Ewy is in Lamb. Vicky and Diane went into the Horses Field where they are with a bag with a little feed in it. Most Sheep that I have had will come to a rattling bag and all came to get the food from them. They tell me a few of them have very big udders so they cant be far from Lambing. If I can find the time tomorrow I will get them into the Barn to Lamb.

David has made and fitted a rope ladder for the Squirrel obstacle course. Unfortunately the Squirrels that I have seen going to the nuts have learnt how to jump from the pole with the feeder on, onto the feeder without doing the course. Must try to sort that one out.

Elaine reminded us that it is Thornton’s Birthday on Tuesday. How time has gone. Vicky is going to take some photographs of him for Tuesdays Photo Page. That’s of course if he allows her to. For as Vicky and her Family have been spoiling him with treats, now every time he sees any of the Family he gives them a bash with his head to let them know he wants a treat. As you can tell he is well again. I am sure that he was sulking rather than unwell.

I don’t believe any of you saw the Buzzard take a Squirrel off of the new feeding tray David made this morning. We had hoped that the Squirrels would not be able to get onto the new tray, but they found a way. Unfortunately one paid the price, and its cries were not very pleasant to hear. David has put a wooden baffle under the tray, that we had hoped would stop the Squirrels from getting on to the tray this time. But that has not worked, by the time we got back to watch on the webcam the Squirrel had perched its self on the baffle and was happily eating. That’s it, cant waste any more time the Squirrels can get on with it.

The Geese were on the Lake this Morning. They went on to the Island, the Goose looking as if she was placing a few twigs and grass, maybe the beginning of a nest.

One of the Reindeer has shed one of her Antlers. She must had done so when she got out of the Reindeer Field. Unfortunately when I walked around the Field to try to find it I could not see it. I had hoped to have mounted the three sets of the Females Antler to hang in the Holiday Cottages. It is one of the Reindeer that doesn’t normally get out.

It didn’t take one of the Squirrels long to get onto the tray of the new feeding site. I washed down the Squirrel Guard as I thought that the Squirrel may be getting a little grip on some mud that had got on the guard. I also put some oil on it to make it slippery, but one of the Squirrels still managed to get on to the tray.

The Fox in the Valley last night had caught a Rabbit for his supper.

Here are some photos of Rosie who is a Tortie. She doesn’t look much like a Calico. What do you call this type in England please? Rosie’s Mum in Toronto.

The way that one of the Badgers was collecting bedding and taking it back to the Sett a couple of nights ago, I would reckon that one has given birth.

We tidied up the Island this afternoon and strimmed the grass back so that we will be able to see the Goose sitting her eggs. That is of course if they decide to nest on the Island. There is a chance that with the grass cut back they will not bother to nest on the Island. I don’t think that will be the case, although it may take them a couple of visits to get use to it. The Geese landed on the Lake this morning. The webcams were on when they flew in, their reflection being seen a long time in the Lake before they landed, They only stayed a little over an hour before flying off.

We altered the Bird feeders today in the hope that we can keep the Squirrels off. The Squirrels were taking over the Bird feeders. We have also put a Squirrel deterrent under the tray that the feeders are now on, but I wouldn’t be surprised if they don’t find a way of getting to the Bird food.

The Squirrel feeder and obstacle course is in the Badger Field, so I guess if they cant get on to the Bird feeders they will go there. Most days the Squirrel are knocking the front of their feeder out causing all of their peanuts to finish up on the ground. I have got to put a different front onto the box, and try to put an addition to the course.

We are having a few problems with our broadband connections that is causing the webcams to go off intermittently. I have been trying to get it sorted out since Thursday. Unforetunately the initial contact is with an overseas call centre who are not opening another line of contact that will sort the problem out. I normally see that the webcams are off very quickly unless I have to go out.
