Starting from number six there are five new photographs on the Photo Page.

Nearly out of photographs.

Chris thought I needed cheering up, so this afternoon we visited Noah’s Ark Zoo Farm, near Bristol. Julia .

Every day we can see the Goslings getting bigger and changing colour and gaining confidence in what they do. They are starting to swim away leaving their parents on the bank. Over the past few days the Goslings have been trying out their wings in earnest. They really seem to be enjoying themselves moving quickly over the surface of the Lake, then diving under the water before preening themselves.

It wont be long before they try to take their first flight. That is when they will be in danger. For they will be liable to land on the other side of the electric fencing. If we are unable to guide them back to the safety behind the electric fence the Fox will have easy pickings.

The other danger for the Goslings are the over head cables as there is a chance that they will hit them on taking off and landing. I hope that as they have seen them since hatching they will realise the danger the overhead wires will be.

We are getting a few Heron visiting the Lakes over the past weeks. I suppose we get a least one most days but don’t see them. I should think that they must have young and are wanting to feed them. We try to remember to check on the webcam around the Lake so that we can chase them off. This morning there was a very persistent Heron who when he was chased away was flying around in a circle to land on on Lake then the other. I had to go out four times before it finally flew away.

The Geese were hiding their Goslings under their wings and were watching whilst the Heron was around. The Goslings would make a good meal for the Heron. As soon as the Heron had gone the Goslings were out and feeding. At this time of the year with the Fish spawning they are also an easy meal for the Heron. The Fish spawn in the reeds on the edge of the Lake. It is a bit of a frenzy with many male Fish chasing a female trying to fertilise her eggs. Many times we can see the frenzied group half out of the water, allowing a Heron to catch the smaller Fish or to stab the larger Fish with its long beak, scarring or killing them. The Heron wouldn’t be my favorite Bird.

I should think that anyone who has seen the Goslings on the Lake must as been as, well I really don’t know what words to use, shocked, surprised, flabbergasted I really cant believe it, there has got to be some other explanation. Going by the size I can see on the webcam they look the same Goslings that went missing, and for sure the nearest Lake to the Farm is well over a mile away.

This morning one of our Holiday guest told us that the Goose had returned. I went to feed her this afternoon at about 2.pm. There was no sign of any other Geese or Goslings on the Lake. After I had returned to the Farm House there was an almighty commotion as a Goose attempted to land in the Farm Yard, it was being chased away by a number of Doves. It is starting to sound bizarre to me, and I am here. Thinking that it was the Goose and she was flying towards the Lake I turned the Lake webcam on to watch her landing. I left my private view of the Lake on, and pair of Geese came into view, and then two Goslings came into view, I then put the webcams on and on the near Lake webcam I saw another Gosling. I returned to the Lake. When I saw the Goslings close up it was obvious by the slightly smaller size than those that went missing.

Where this new family has come from I have no idea, other than it is the other pair of Geese that were coming and going as the first pair were incubating their eggs. They must have nested very close by. What ever it would not have been very far away, maybe in the small pond next to the large Lake, and they had stayed well hidden, but surly we would have seen them. There were a number of our Holiday Guest fishing the Lake last week, they didn’t say they had seen any Geese. The only other place that they may have nested is in our fields across the lane, at the end of our drive. The Stream passes in those fields, the grass is very high in the first one, they could have stayed well hidden there.

We only removed the electric fencing two days ago. We will put it back up and take other measures to try to protect them and do all we can to try to keep them from being taken as the last family were, but I don’t think that they will survive, what ever we do.

A pair of Tufted Duck have also come on to the lake. They have been here for three days. One of the Moorhens doesn’t seem best pleased to have them as company. I hope he doesn’t frighten them away.

Starting from number eleven there are five new photographs on the Photo page, all sent in by Liz. North Yorkshire. There will be five from Elaine tomorrow.

The Goldfinch was taken on the feeder in the front garden.

The blackbird is one of an army of birds that come for their daily servings of sultanas.

Greenfinch on the feeder.

The remaining 2 shots are of the back garden, the plant on its own is a Dicentra spectablis (Bleeding Heart). I have planted a few fruit trees and bushes, but so far have not had any fruit from any as the birds always get there first!!! Oh well that’s life as they say lol Liz North Yorkshire.

As you may have noticed the Gosling disappeared last night. I spoke to soon in last nights Diary. They disappeared in such a small space of time I find it hard to believe that two of then went at the same time. I had fed them just before I had fed the Badgers and returned to the Lake at about 9.25 pm with a new battery for the electric fencer. The Battery had very little life in it so I would use the battery from our lawn mower. At about 10.20pm I went to change the battery over. I checked the Lake webcam, the Goose and Goslings were making their way to the fenced area but turned away. I went to the lawn mower to remove the battery that is on the way to the Lake. Whilst moving the Battery I heard the Goose start to call, it was no longer than 10 minutes after I had seen the three on the webcam probably less. When I got to the Lake a minute or so later the Goslings had gone.

Later I checked the recording device that I had put on to record the Badger Cubs if they had shown their selves. All camera record at once, so I was able to look back at the two lake cameras. The last that I saw of the Goslings was as they were making their way to the right hand side of the Lake, away from the fenced area. It was strange that the two disappeared. If they had got taken or were frightened and fell into the stream and got wash away I really don’t know. There are no sign around the Lake of any remains of the Goslings. I had hoped with the way that the Goslings were growing that this year we may have seen them fly off of the Lake. We tried all we could to keep them alive this year, but it has been a disaster for the Geese. Only the Goose has survived, all five Goslings gone and the Gander. I will stop any Geese from breding in future years. I should have this year. The Goose will stay on the Lake for a day or so and will fly off.

Shetland ponies on the Shetland islands. Lindsay.

The Goose with the three Goslings managed to survive the night. Mrs Goose had the good sense to return to the island. Just in case I electric fenced at the end that the Fox came from to take the Gander, I also put a couple of gates at another place that the Fox would have an easy way to get to the Geese, but it still leaves many places for a Fox to get to them.

We don’t normally feed the Geese when they are on the Lake, but yesterday afternoon we gave the Goose and Goslings bread. The Goose had obviously been fed before by people, as she came straight over for it. We will do all we can to keep them alive but I really do think that the Goslings have only a little chance. The other pair of Geese flew in this morning. They will nest if they can get on the island but I fear they will finish up the same way. I am very tempted to chase them off of the Lake and hope that they will find another place to nest.

We let Emmi, Sox and Lady out into the main Horse field of a day and Breeze and Arnie of a night. If we put all the Horses in together, Breeze will cause problems being the herd leader, she will try to herd them up causing a few kicking session, so as last year we are going to electric fence off an area for Breeze so that she gets use to the other Horses. It will help to stop any major problems when we let the Horses run together. As soon as we let Breeze in to the Horse field, Ewy make her way to be with her. Ewy has been on her own, mainly in the Horse field for the whole of the Winter.

The Gosling did survive the night, but they had a lucky escape this afternoon. I thought that last night the Geese were not going to the safety of the island. A couple of times it looked as if they were going there, but they turned away at the last moment. It wasnt until it was nearly dark that they eventually settled on the island, with the Gander keeping watch. Every time that I checked the webcam he was standing upright like a guard.

Around about 3.pm this afternoon I returned to the Farm, after a quick dash to get some plumbing parts. The Geese suddenly started to call out just after I had caught sight of Kye coming from the direction of the calling. I found the Geese in the sand school. On approaching them to see if the Goslings were with them, they flew away, landing in my neighbours next door field. There were no Gosling to be found. I must admit that I thought that Kye had killed them. I heard the other pair of Geese calling from the Lake. When I went to investigate one of the missing Gosling was with them, but they were trying to keep away. I called one of my Lads to help me look for the Goslings. As he came to join me he caught site of one of the missing Gosling in the stream, by the side of the Lake. He jumped down the six foot bank to rescue it. When down there he caught sight of another of the Goslings being swept away by the running stream. It went out of sight, so he climbed back out of the stream so that he could help me follow it. When we eventually caught sight of the Gosling again the last missing one was with it. We managed to stop the Gosling from swept down the stream and put them back on the Lake. All four were following the other pair of Geese while the parent were watching from the next field. Soon after my Lad and myself were out of sight of the Lake, the Geese returned to reunited with the Goslings.

I should think that it was Kye chasing the Geese that caused the problem. It would have been the first time that she had seen Geese. Fortunately it finished without loosing the Goslings, but we will need to watch Kye, especially as the Geese have started to graze with the Goslings on the cottage lawn. Since the Gosling have hatched the geese have been wandering all around the Farm. This morning we found them waddling along the Farm drive, looking very much as they were leaving. Fortunately they tuned around before reaching the Lane. But it is nice to see them and I am sure that our Holiday Guest will enjoy them.

We purchased our Telescope from the oldest telescope suppliers in the World called Telescope House. They have been in business since 1785 and are the main stockist for many brands, and they were the cheapest to purchase from. They have just opened a new business called Buzzoptics www.buzzoptics.com selling optical equipment that is used for as well as others, watching wildlife, Yesterday they offered to give us some sponsorship, not money I am sad to tell. They are supplying us initially with Binoculars and Scopes for our Holiday Guest to use for watching our Wildlife. We are putting a few links on the website. If they see that they are receiving sales from the links they will give us financial support. If you are considering buying any Binocular or Scopes please give them the opportunity to give you a price. I have found them very competitive and helpful when I have needed advice. Mention Denbury Farm and they will give you an extra discount. We may also get much needed sponsorship.

I got up early this morning to see how the…

I got up early this morning to see how the Geese with the Goslings had got on over night. As every year, the Goslings had gone. The Geese were on the pond next to the lake, calling and looking for their missing Goslings. When they saw me they came in my direction, calling a little louder as if I may of known where their Goslings were. Cats, Rats, Carrion or Fox, I have never found out what takes them every year. I could well be a combination of all or some. It is very sad. The Geese will stay around for a few days before leaving, returning now and then for an hour or so throughout the summer. It does not matter how many times the Goslings are taken, it no less sad for the Geese, they always swim around the lake looking so proud with the Gosling in a flotilla. They will return next year. No matter how much I try to stop them from staying, they always nest on the island. The other pair of Geese still return most days, they could try to nest on the island, once the others leave.

We introduced Lady and the Filly with Bliss and Misty in the field this morning. Lady decided that she did not want to be with the youngsters, I thought that we may well have had a disaster the way Lady was panicking, and trying to get out of the field. You may have seen her galloping at full speed up and down the field, three or four times, the Filly was hardly able to keep up with her. We were by the gate, she was running at full speed towards the gate, if we had not had been there waving our arms, she would have gone through. At one time Bliss and Misty decided to go a little nearer to Lady, she lunged at them, Bliss being very lucky not to have been bitten. Once Lady had calmed down a little, we let Woody out. Most of the time when she was first let out, Woody was staying close by Lady, giving the Foal a little more protection. The youngsters are keeping their distance from Lady the Foal and Woody, although Woody will try to make the youngster part of her herd, whilst Breeze is not about. The Horses don’t take long to settle and they will soon start to accept each other and get a little closer. Breeze and Arnie when let out with Bliss and Misty, surprised me, by all but ignoring the youngsters. She will start herding them over the next days and will be a good friend to them.

A little while back I was moaning about the lack of rain and how the grass had not grown. It has made up for it now. I think I like the global warming better. We have had so much rain in the past few days that the Horse field is starting to get very muddy near the gate. It seems that the only time the forecaster get it half right is when there is wall to wall sunshine. Five to six years ago we were making the hay. To make good hay you need a minimum of five days of good hot sun shine. The grass it mowed, then turned every day, some times twice so that it fully dries, only when fully dried can it be baled up. What you don’t want is it to be rained on after it is made. Any damp will make mouldy hay, making it useless. On the fifth or sixth day the grass was fully dried, we had made very good hay. We could have baled it that day, being pushed for time we checked the BBC local forecast. The forecaster told us, continued wall to wall sunshine, with no chance of rain. We decided to leave the baling until the next day. When I woke next morning it had poured of rain overnight. I was so annoyed after listening to the forecaster the previous night, that I phoned the BBC, I even managed to speak to the forecaster. I was even more annoyed when he told me that he had seen on the south coast that there could be a chance of rain, coming in my direction, but as it seemed that it would not amount to much, he did not mention it. I could not believe what I was hearing, this was harvesting and hay making time, and it was not worth mentioning. As it happened after the hay had dried again we did make good hay. I even got an apology from the Met Office.

I have checked out the Swallows nest and there are five eggs.

I have left messages for the past three days for the Veterinary to phone me with what they have discussed about Woody, I am still waiting. She is up and down from day to day. You may have seen her in the field with Bliss and Misty. She was running around, rounding them up as if she was as fit as a fiddle.

The Geese eggs hatched today I really didn t know…

The Geese eggs hatched today, I really didn’t know until I scanned around the lake this afternoon. I counted four Goslings. I thought that there was about ten days to go before the eggs were due to hatch. I wanted to get something up to frighten the Carrion Crows and Rooks from taking them. As soon as I saw the Goslings I went over to our farm suppliers, a round journey of thirty miles, to see what bird scarers they had. I have a banging bird scarer, but that is liable to scare other wildlife and the Horses.

I managed get two scarers with bright coloured eyes that are meant to turn in the wind. They didn’t turn very well, as they were poorly made. I should think that I will be taking them back to the suppliers. I have put them around the lake for now, I am sure that it is not going to stop the Goslings from being taken by their predators. Last year they were all gone in the first day. There has been a workman repairing our driveway very near the Geese, I should think that is why none have been taken today. It does sadden me when I see them disappearing.

Unbeknown to me, whilst I was collecting the scarers, Bliss and Misty were let out into the main Horse field. I had wanted to let you see them turned out on camera. They did have a mad ten minutes running around , kicking and bucking. Bliss ran back to the gate and her brakes didn’t work to well, It didn’t help as it had just rained cats and dogs, and she skidded into the gate. fortunately she did not hurt herself. The Fillies would not have been let out, if the forecast had said it was to rain as it has this afternoon. You would reckon with all the satellites and equipment these meteorologists have, they would manage to forecast it right more often than they do. We will let Lady and the Foal out with them in the morning and Breeze and Arnie tomorrow afternoon. There will be a bit of running about then. I will let them out at about 4.pm if you want to see them.

I am pleased some of you managed to see the Deer last night on camera 1. They were a small herd of Red Deer. If you noticed they were a lot bigger than the Roe Deer that we usually see. One of the best ways to recognise the Red Deer is that they are mostly quite deep in the barrel. If you saw the last one go out of sight it was on its way to towards the Farmhouse. I will see if they are about tonight, but the Red Deer are not as territorial as the Roe Deer.

Hopefully you have seen the Swallow camera. I did not manage to count how many eggs were in the nest, If I remember I will count them tomorrow. It was good to see the two Red Squirrels in the nest box at the SWT centre. I just wonder if it is going to happen. They have received the new miniature colour camera for the nest box, that I sent them. If Red Squirrels keep returning you should soon see them in colour.

Going by Barry’s entry on the forum today, Rye Harbour is having a bit of trouble with the bigger Gulls, that are taking the Black Headed Gull and Common Terns eggs. Last year they had Gulls nesting on the web cams, it was very good with a not a particularly good camera. This year it should be pretty spectacular with the camera in the position it is and the excellent pictures that they are producing.

The Ewe and lambs are still doing well the lambs…

The Ewe and lambs are still doing well, the lambs are feeding and prancing about like spring lambs. Unfortunately the weather has been to bad to let them out into the fields, they are very small and would get very wet and cold and quickly die of hypothermia. We do keep little rain macks for lambs but they would smother these two.

About this time of year a pair of Canada Geese normally start to fly in for their nesting, they start flying onto the lake for hour or so, a few days a week, gradually increasing the amount of time and days. They must be making sure that it is safe, today they were here early and have stayed all day. You know when they are coming and going with their honking call. Normally another pair will try to take over their territory, as do a pair of Swans, they never succeed. Although it would be good to have the Swans nesting on the lake, they would probably be more successful than the Geese who have only managed to keep one gosling alive in the past five years. They always hatch their eggs but they don’t last very long. Although I have never seen the Goslings being taken, I should think the Carrion Crow and Fox must take them.

We have tried every thing we can to try to help them, we even put up electric fences around the lake so that the fox cant get to them, last year they had five Goslings and none of them lasted the day. There is a little island in the middle of the lake were they nest, it is overgrown and a safe refuge, but as soon as they hatch the eggs they take the gosling to the bank which is open and very easy for them to be picked off.
