When I went to give the Reindeer their morning feed one was missing. I found her in their shed laying down with what looked like the Head of her Calf in the birth sack starting to show. I didn’t want to rush into helping her Calf as she was not in any stress and and returned to the Farm House for a cup of coffee, to return in half an to see how the Reindeer was getting on. When I returned she was up and outside with no sign of the birth sack. When I went into the shed there was a small birth sack with the embryo still inside. The Reindeer had aborted her Calf. The Calf was well formed with what I would say getting on for four to five weeks before her full term of the pregnancy. It looks very much as if the Helicopter that frightened the Reindeer had caused the abortion. We have to hope that the other Reindeer that was frightened will not abort. Although she doesn’t look great.

Andrew our 6 year old holiday guest met Thornton this morning. Whats that Mister he asked. That Thornton our pet Lamb. I cant believe that Andrew had never seen a Lamb before, but it seems he had not, or a least had forgotten he had. His Mother told us that when he first saw Thornton out of the window he thought that he was a Dog. Thornton sees himself as a Dog so maybe Andrew wasn’t being unreasonable. As far as Thornton was concerned I don’t think that he has enjoyed the experience of meeting Andrew. I made the mistake of telling Andrew that Thornton enjoyed playing with a ball. One of the dogs footballs hit Thornton on the head. Andrew thought that it was a game and chased after him. Thornton did move and hasn’t been near Andrew Cottage all day.

Wheres your Chickens Mister, Wheres your Chickens asked the Son of our new Holiday Guests that arrived today. We don’t have Chickens I replied. All Farms have Chickens Mister. Sorry we haven’t got any. Mum they ain’t got Chickens he screamed out. 6 year old Andrew looks as if he is going to be a handful.

Mind you he has put an idea in our minds that maybe it would be nice to have a few Chickens to supply us and maybe our Holiday Guests with Free Range Eggs. We did have Chickens when we first came to Denbury. We got them from a Battery Farm. They where quit a state when we collected them from the Farm. The very next day they produced eggs and did so for a long time. Cant even remember what happened to them. We also had a two Chickens, a Cockerel and some Silkies about ten years ago. Cant remember the name of Chickens they where, maybe Splash Orpingtons. They were large white Chickens with a black fleck. I remember what happened to them. Mr.Fox had them one afternoon.

We still have a Chicken Hutch that I made when we had the last Chickens. If we do decide to get a few, we will put the Hutch near the Cottages so that the Children who visit Denbury can get involved with feeding the Chicken and collecting the eggs. There is an Auction for Pure Bred Poultry this Saturday at our local Livestock Market. To late for Andrew.

Sorry to those who may not have known that we feed the Badgers as if the clocks were not altered. Every time that we have to change our clocks I moan. There really is no reason for it.

Whilst the Badgers were feeding Thursday night I checked the Lake on my private view of the webcams to see if the Geese were about. When I looked at the Island I saw a rat slipping into the water to swim to the far bank. At first I thought that I had seen one of the Geese on the bank, but on a second look I saw that it was a Heron. The infra-red lamp did not quit allow for a good image on the far bank but it did look as if the Heron may have had a Fish in its beak. I didn’t hang about just in case it was not and it was going to continue fishing. By the time I had reached the Lake it was flying away. It probably heard me approaching. What surprised me was that the the Heron was on the Lake in the dark, let alone fishing. I had always believed that Herons return to their heronries at night. I not sure that I mentioned that some while ago I saw a Heron swimming on the Lake. I know I wasn’t dreaming but when I have told people they have looked at me as if I was mad.

I am a bit concerned about seeing rats on the Island as the Geese eggs will be left until all of the eggs are laid, giving the chance of a meal to the rats. I will monitor the Island to make sure that the Island is not being used by the Ducks, Moorhens or Coots to nest. If not I may decide to try to get rid of the rats.

One of last years Lamb went missing again yesterday. I managed to convince Diane, Vicky and David that they would enjoy finding him. There was also a Ewe missing this morning. The way that the Ewes udder were looking when I looked at them yesterday I would not have been surprised if they had found her with Lambs. As it happens the Ewe was no where to be seen. I should think that she has hidden herself away to Lamb. If she doesn’t turn up in the morning I will need to find her.

As for the Lamb, he was found with a branch through his horns as I had found him last week. The branch was making it impossible for him to move. We have had a lot of Sheep and Lambs with horns who have never been caught up. This Lamb is making it a habit. We will need to keep watch on him, expecting that he is caught up when he is missing.

I have worked it out that the first Reindeer to Calf should do so in just over two weeks time. One of the Reindeer that was frightened by the Helicopter is not eating the amount of feed that the other two are eating, and she seems to have lost a bit of weight. The Veterinary said that this was a possibility and that she may abort the Calf, although she does still look pregnant. It wont be long until we find out.

Vicky’s boyfriend David was helping me finish off feeding the animals this evening. The Reindeer needed water so we had to get the quad bike out of the Barn to take the water carriers to the Reindeer Field. By the side of the Stables there was a dead Dove obviously just been attacked. A little distance away a Sparrow Hawk landed in a Tree. On returning to the Stables the Sparrow Hawk flew in front of him with the Dove. It wasn’t going to give up that feed.

Thornton has got a liking for peanuts. I wouldn’t mind, but he is not happy with being given a few now and then, he has decided that he wants the Badgers. For the past few weeks he tries to follow me to the Badger feeding sites. I know that he is following me, but as soon as I look around to him, he starts to eat the grass as if he was not following. I now need to try to stop Thornton from seeing me going to feed the Badgers. I am not very successful and finish up chasing him all the way back to the Farm House. Sheep are not so dumb.

It looks as if the Goose are getting her nest ready to start laying her eggs. For the past few days she has spent a little time on the Island. Today she was on the Island for a good few hours placing nest material in one place. If she lays where the nest has been made we will have a very good view of her sitting her eggs.

Our free range Sheep have decided to come back to Denbury. For a time I thought that I would not see them again after the last two went missing. The ten are back with all of the Ewes looking very pregnant. Even Ewy is in Lamb. Vicky and Diane went into the Horses Field where they are with a bag with a little feed in it. Most Sheep that I have had will come to a rattling bag and all came to get the food from them. They tell me a few of them have very big udders so they cant be far from Lambing. If I can find the time tomorrow I will get them into the Barn to Lamb.

David has made and fitted a rope ladder for the Squirrel obstacle course. Unfortunately the Squirrels that I have seen going to the nuts have learnt how to jump from the pole with the feeder on, onto the feeder without doing the course. Must try to sort that one out.

The Barn Owl Nest Box webcam was turned on today. Just before 5.30pm I saw that the Owls were mating, so it should not be long before we see an egg.

The camera that we have supplied is a colour/ mono camera that if there is sufficient light should go into colour mode. I think you will all agree the picture quality is far better than that of last year. A microphone has also been put into the nest box. As soon as time can be found the Trust hope to get it going.

The main Stream that meanders its way through the Farm, also runs very close to the side of the Lake. In places little more than eight foot apart. Unfortunately the past few wet years has caused the Stream to run faster and harder than normal, causing quite a lot of erosion. It would not be so bad but the stream runs at the bottom of a six foot bank with the top of the bank being level to the water line of the Lake, so the erosion has to be stopped.

We had an extortionate quote on stopping the erosion at the end of last year. It made me think that there must be an alternative way of doing the work needed. The intention was to do it my way during the Summer. Last week we had a visitor to the Farm and we spoke about the erosion and he suggested Willow Spiling, assuring that it was a very easy procedure. It was one of the extortionate quotes, that on making inquiries from Willow Growers will cost only a fraction of what we were quoted.

Thorntons Birthday Photographs by Vicky.

Thornton is one year old tomorrow. For those of you who do not know how Thornton became a Pet. Thornton was one of twins who had some how had managed to fall out of the Sheep pen we had made for the Sheep whilst they were giving birth. When we went to the Barn to give the Horses and Sheep their morning feed we found one of the Sheep had given birth in the night. She had one Lamb. After having a cup of coffee we went back out again to the Barn to muck out. It was then that we heard one weak lamb bleat coming from under the big round hay bales. It was only one bleat so it was a bit like looking for a needle in a hay stack, but eventually laying flat out one the ground the Lamb was pulled out from under the bales, wet, cold and looking that he would not survive. After drying and warming the Lamb up we put him on to the Ewes Teat in the hope that it was not to late for it to get the life giving colostrum. The Ewe would not accept the Lamb taking the colostrum and tried as hard as she could to push it away, but we did manage to get some into the Lamb. We penned the Ewe and her two Lambs in a separate area in the hope that she would accept the Lamb, but every time we went to see them the Ewe was butting the Lamb away, until eventually we had not alternative but to take the Lamb in to the Farm House to feed it and try top keep it alive.

It was Easter Monday. On the kitchen top was a box of Thornton Chocolates. Hence Thornton was named. Tass and Kye were not best pleased. Nature tells them that Thornton was food and it took a while for them to get use to him. I should think that it was not to much longer than a week that Thornton was going for walks with Tass and Kye, although they would much rather had of eaten him than had him for company. Eventually the Dogs got use to Thornton. Tass at times even being motherly towards him. Now all three get on quite well. Going for walks and runs along side the Quad Bike. Although Thornton lives in the Farm house we do part him from the Dogs at night we we go to bed, just in case. Although he does at times playfully butts both Tass and Kye with his head.

As far as Thornton is concerned he is a Dog dressed in Sheep drag. He will always live in the Farm House as he has become a pet as have our dogs. Every one who meets Thornton likes him, and he likes all of them. He is as much of Denbury as any other animal or person, and we would never want to part with him.

OSPREY FAQs

Why do ospreys only live here for half the year? And where are they for the other half?
In Britain ospreys are migratory, which means that they travel to another part of the world as part of their life cycle. They spend their winters on the west coast of Africa, in Gambia and Senegal. They come to Scotland, and now to parts of England too, to breed.

So are all ospreys like this?
No. In Australia and parts of America ospreys do not migrate.

Why do ospreys bother coming here in the summer?
This is where ospreys are from. They are born here and they breed here. If it weren
