Thorntons Birthday Photographs by Vicky.

Thornton is one year old tomorrow. For those of you who do not know how Thornton became a Pet. Thornton was one of twins who had some how had managed to fall out of the Sheep pen we had made for the Sheep whilst they were giving birth. When we went to the Barn to give the Horses and Sheep their morning feed we found one of the Sheep had given birth in the night. She had one Lamb. After having a cup of coffee we went back out again to the Barn to muck out. It was then that we heard one weak lamb bleat coming from under the big round hay bales. It was only one bleat so it was a bit like looking for a needle in a hay stack, but eventually laying flat out one the ground the Lamb was pulled out from under the bales, wet, cold and looking that he would not survive. After drying and warming the Lamb up we put him on to the Ewes Teat in the hope that it was not to late for it to get the life giving colostrum. The Ewe would not accept the Lamb taking the colostrum and tried as hard as she could to push it away, but we did manage to get some into the Lamb. We penned the Ewe and her two Lambs in a separate area in the hope that she would accept the Lamb, but every time we went to see them the Ewe was butting the Lamb away, until eventually we had not alternative but to take the Lamb in to the Farm House to feed it and try top keep it alive.

It was Easter Monday. On the kitchen top was a box of Thornton Chocolates. Hence Thornton was named. Tass and Kye were not best pleased. Nature tells them that Thornton was food and it took a while for them to get use to him. I should think that it was not to much longer than a week that Thornton was going for walks with Tass and Kye, although they would much rather had of eaten him than had him for company. Eventually the Dogs got use to Thornton. Tass at times even being motherly towards him. Now all three get on quite well. Going for walks and runs along side the Quad Bike. Although Thornton lives in the Farm house we do part him from the Dogs at night we we go to bed, just in case. Although he does at times playfully butts both Tass and Kye with his head.

As far as Thornton is concerned he is a Dog dressed in Sheep drag. He will always live in the Farm House as he has become a pet as have our dogs. Every one who meets Thornton likes him, and he likes all of them. He is as much of Denbury as any other animal or person, and we would never want to part with him.

Peter from the Lock sent the Osprey information below.

OSPREY FAQs

Why do ospreys only live here for half the year? And where are they for the other half?
In Britain ospreys are migratory, which means that they travel to another part of the world as part of their life cycle. They spend their winters on the west coast of Africa, in Gambia and Senegal. They come to Scotland, and now to parts of England too, to breed.

So are all ospreys like this?
No. In Australia and parts of America ospreys do not migrate.

Why do ospreys bother coming here in the summer?
This is where ospreys are from. They are born here and they breed here. If it weren

Hi All

At 7.30 am this morning the female osprey arrived back at Loch of the Lowes. She is looking in really good shape for a bird that has just flown 3000 miles from west Africa. This year is the 40th anniversary of the reserve and the return of the osprey to Perthshire. What better way to celebrate this milestone than with our female who has been breeding at Loch of the Lowes since 1991. Hopefully within the next week we will see her partner return from Africa .

We are all very excited as we all had our reservation about her return. She is now well into her twenties, a good age for an osprey. Lets hope she goes on to produce healthy chicks this season. Peter Lock of the Lowe’s.

Not only has the Locks Osprey returned. When I spoke to Peter At Indian River Bay, Delaware one of his Osprey returned yesterday. Peter is reopositioning his camera today. Hopefully that will be up and running, maybe even today.

We have found the missing Female Reindeer that was frightened by the Helicopter. She is in the Woods behind the Reindeer Field not looking to happy. We have tried to coax her back into the Field but she is not ready yet. We are sure that she will go back in her own time. We would have trouble trying to catch her. If we were unsuccessful chances are that she will go further away. As with the one that returned shortly after the incident she is also scouring. Not good when they are only a month or so from Calving. Too much stress could easily cause them to abort.

There are five new photographs on the Photo page, starting from number eleven. Getting very low on photographs.

Hello Mr. Farmer, I have only posted on the forum once, but I read the diary everyday..Thank you for your web site. I am the executive director for homeless and domestic violence services in rural North Carolina. When things get really hectic and crazy around here I take a peek at the cameras and it really help me refocus! I have pasted a picture of our cat Kentucky. We lived next door to cloistered Domenican Nuns before we moved here from New Jersey last year. Kentucky used to climb over the wall to visit the nuns and he helped us become friends. I pasted the picture from their web site, but they let us use the pictures before. Cathy.

I was quite sure that the Goslings had hatched yesterday by the way the Geese were acting. I cant remember other Geese having five Goslings before on the Lake, I think the most was four. What I am pleased to see is that the Geese with the Gosling look as if they are going to stay on the island overnight, so it looks as if the ramp was the right thing to put up. With a bit of luck the Gosling may survive this year. When I saw them this morning we all got working and made a scarecrow within half an hour, just in case it is birds that have been taking the Gosling in previous years. I don’t know if the scarecrow will help, but it was worth a try. We will move it tomorrow morning to another place on the Lake, so that the Rooks and Crows don’t get use to it. There have been another pair of Geese on the Lake for part of the day, but they didn’t seem to bother the nesting pair as they did when they were sitting on the eggs.

I didn’t get time to put the camera up to watch the nesting bird in the haystack. I will try to do it tomorrow. The good news is that we saw a Wren come out of the nest that has eggs in it at the other end of the stack.

If you scroll down the thumbnail page you will find a new thumbnail of the USA Osprey nest that is now live. There needs to be a couple of adjustment to get the screen the same size as the other webcams. I will get that done over the next few days. The Osprey is sitting on eggs and I am quite sure that the eggs were laid about a week before the Lock of the Lowe’s Ospreys. There are difference in the USA and Scottish Osprey, I will get Peter to tell you what. After about a week after the eggs have hatched, the USA Peter will have to put the camera up a little higher, zoom it out a bit and adjust the focus, or we could just be seeing the twigs of the nest. The night time pictures are not great at the moment because of the focus. It will be put right soon.

I will use Peters press release on the return of the Female Osprey to The Lock of the Lowes today for tonight Diary.

PRESS RELEASE

For immediate use: 30 March 2008

First osprey returns to the Lowes

The Scottish Wildlife Trust [SWT] is delighted to announce that today (30 March 2008) the original female osprey has returned to her summer home at Loch of the Lowes Wildlife Reserve near Dunkeld. Once the first egg is laid, staff and nearly 70 volunteers will take it in turns to man the round-the-clock watch to safeguard these magnificent creatures.

The female osprey arrived at 2pm this afternoon and has already been joined by, and mated with, a male osprey with a yellow ring. The resident male has not yet been seen but can arrive some time after his partner, when he will attempt to chase any interloper away and take over the breeding process.

Once a common species in Britain by 1916 ospreys were all but extinct. Thanks to tremendous conservation efforts ospreys are once again an established part of Scotland

Hope you get this Sorry it appears to be black and white. I thought this might wet appetites of things to come over the Spring and Summer when the Osprey return. It was taken on the 17th July shortly before the chicks fledged. Elaine.

Linsey asked about the Geese. I reckon that it may have been the weather that kept them away. Today two pairs arrived on the Lake within an hour of each other. I put the camera on them but had to get on with some work, so I was unable to follow them. One pair flew off very soon after arriving the other pair stayed until late afternoon, I am sure the one pair will eventually stay and nest on the Lake. I have got the wire to get the new camera working that will overlook the Geese nest. It is just managing to find the time to do it.

Jack has nearly got the Duck finished. I phoned him this evening about it. Whilst putting the camera into the ducks head, he knocked the signal ariel off and was soldering it back on when I phoned. There is a chance that it may not be able to be repaired. If it cant be, it will mean buying a new camera from China. It could well be alright I will let you know.

Anjela asked a few days ago about having sound on the Ghost Cam. We have asked the question, but have also needed to give advice. Sound would be great on all of the webcams, but unless it is in a location away from people, as is the Osprey Nest at the Lock of the Lowe’s, it would be too intrusive to the lives of those broadcasting the webcams. On the Farm when working we would have to be careful of what we said. Private conversation that we may be talking about as we are working, could be overheard. I would like to put sound on of a night where the Badger and Fox feed and in the Valley where we can hear the Owls and other nocturnal life, but it is to easy to forget to turn the sound off of a day. In the house where the Ghost Cams are the occupant very rarely go away, like us they have animals to look after.

The occupants of the Haunted House do very regularly hear noises that cant be explained. Creaking floors as if someone was walking about and other noises. They have promised that as soon as they get time they will tell you of other sightings and incident that have happen, some very recent.

A couple of entries were submitted to the Forum about our sponsors CJ. To those who submitted them, I did not approve them, not because your comments were necessarily wrong, but because CJ are still our sponsors and have been good to us over the period that we have been associated with them. I am sure no offence was meant or taken.

Another entry that I did not approve was from John who suggested that the forum could be on a done via Yahoo, with an on line chat room. Don’t like that idea John. For one it is very difficult to monitor chat rooms and they tend to invite the worse aspects of the web and often the worse people. Our Forum is very basic, but also very easy.

Robin I didn’t put you link on the other day, as there are adds on the side.

Nice idea Margaret-Poole, I don’t need it yet.

This weather has reminded me of last years Womad Music Festival, which was held at Malmesbury Wiltshire, these photos were taken on 27th July. Rose. Wincanton.

Unfortunately unlike me Peter at The Lock of the Lowe’s relies on others to do most of the work that is needed for the webcams and the CCTV security that protects the Osprey Nest from being robbed. There is a problem with the infra red lamps on the site, where the Red Squirrel and Pine Martin can be seen. A volunteer was to install new cameras, If the weather at the Lock had been better this week and they had not had Gales the work would have been done by now. It is now hopefully going to be done as from the coming Monday. Peter hopes before the Osprey arrive.

Our Sponsor CJ Wild Bird Feeds may well be ending their support to Denbury Farm. CJ have supplied for a number of years all of our Bird and Badger Feed. It represents quite substantial sum of money that we would have to find. CJ need to see that they are benefiting from any sponsorship to who ever they give it to. If you are considering purchasing any type of the products that they sell, check their site out. They also has a lot of interesting tips, advice and much more of interest on the CJ Web Site.

I have got to try to find some good wild life photographs on the web tonight, for a makeover of the WBC home page. The flash at the top of the site is showing a number of sites that we were talking to about webcams, that never came to anything. They will be going when the face lift is complete.

Finished the concreting in the base for the new camera…

Finished the concreting in the base for the new camera tower today. As one of my Lads said, just got to hope that we don’t find one of the Badgers cemented in, when we check it in the morning. The concrete will take a few days to set, so that we can put the tower up.

It was good to see the report that Ospreys have been seen on the Chew Valley waters. Of course unless we know if they are ringed and what number they have, we can never be sure where they have been nesting, or what nest they originated from. It would be good if they came from the Lock of the Lowe’s, but I should think that they are more than likely to have come from a site in Wales.

Osprey were once visitors all over the British Isles. Being that they are using Chew Valley as a stop over, there could be a chance that a pair may nest there at some time. As I told you last week, Peter DeMarie from Delaware USA, contacted me last week about webcams at a site that is just a couple of hundred yards from his home. Peter is a Osprey monitoring volunteer for the State of Delaware. He has emailed me some photographs of the site that is by his house. The Osprey nest is a platform on top of a pole. It is in the middle of a lake surrounded by houses. The complete opposite to the sites in the British Isles, that seem to be in isolated areas or on Water Companies Lakes and reservoirs. I will try to have a word with the people in charge of Chew Valley. Who knows they may be interested in a webcam at their site, for at a quick glance, they do have a large assortment of wildlife there.

The Lock of the Lowe s Osprey Diary reported that…

The Lock of the Lowe’s Osprey Diary reported that the last born chick had died last night. For a few days, a number of those using our Forum, could see that it was struggling to get the food that it needed. The Manager of the Centre told me that nearly every year, all the chicks have fledged. Yesterday was a very wet and cold day at the Lock, the female had a choice of feeding the chick or letting it get cold and wet. What ever she chose the Chick was likely to die.

When I checked on the Locks camera two this morning, there was a view of the Lock. I thought that the new cameras had been installed. The camera that was looking at at the tree, that the Osprey nest is in, had been moved to show the lock. The camera has quite a wide angle, so you can see how close the Lock is to the centres building. The camera when showing the Lock, is showing the place where the Osprey has been seen to fish. When the new PTZ camera does get working there should be some spectacular viewing.

One of the baby Swallows was not in the nest when I turned the camera on this morning. They seemed very restless last night. It seems that the nest was to small to hold the five chicks, and one must have fell out in the night. I did spend some time looking around the barn to find it. The other nest I have a camera looking at, is a bit of a mystery. When I found that the nest was being used, I thought that I had counted two eggs. On checking it again today, there were two eggs. I have seen the Swallows visiting the nest from time to time, and even one sitting on the nest, but for not a long, as maybe they should. Alex’s Chloe, reckons that the chicks look funny. They remind me of the American Boxing Promoter Don King. Any other people that they or any of the other animals remind you of? Be careful I wont put up any thing to derogatory.

Quite a number of Bats were flying around the lake last night. When I put the new IR lamp up, I had not expected to see such a display of Bats, as I did last night. You can see them flying around the fields on the valley camera, but not to the extent, and as close as last night on the lake. We have Bats in our loft and in the barns that have not been converted, although when I look for them in our loft, I can never find them. We know we have them, as the fly out from different places of the roof space. When it gets dark, if we look into the roof space with a torch, there are always Bats flying about.

The Telescope is nearly ready to start again, I didn’t try to finish getting it completely ready, as the forecast was against clear skies tonight. Wrong again Mr.Met Man. To be able to set the Telescope up, I need a align it to two stars, when that is done it will follow what ever it is being tracked, more accurately. There is a piece of equipment called a SkyScout. I need one. It is very clever. All that you need to do is to point it to a Star and it tells you the name of that Star. The stockist in the UK, have not had them delivered as yet. They are manufactured in the USA. There suppliers are not allowed by the manufacturer to send them outside of the Country, or they will lose their franchise. However they are able to be paid for outside the USA, as long as they are posted to a USA address. They can then be sent to the UK. Is there anyone in the USA able to help. I have found a supplier who will take payment with my credit card and I will of course send the postage. If so please email me at info@denburyfarm.co.uk.

What a lovely surprise we had in the post today, addressed to Mr & Mrs. Farmer. A very pretty Thank you Card. I hope you don’t mind me mentioning your name, but it was very kind of you Alex. The card was what you would call a pop-up card, depicting a Blue Tits nest with chicks and a Blue Tit with springy wing flying to the nest. Very appropriate. And again thank you.
