More photographs from Zambia. Rose W’canton.

I had missed these photographs that Rose had sent in. These are the very last that we have.

I am not going to say anything about the Geese and Goslings, other than the electric fencing should stop any thing from going into the Lake area from the ground. From above is something out of my control.

Yesterday and about a week back a new pair of Geese landed on the large pond next to the Lake. On the first occasion our Gander flew through the electric fencing to chase them off. As its feet were not on the floor he would not have got a shock. If he had got caught up in the fencing wire he may of hurt himself. The other Geese left soon after.

We are getting a few Heron visiting the Lakes over the past weeks. I suppose we get a least one most days but don’t see them. I should think that they must have young and are wanting to feed them. We try to remember to check on the webcam around the Lake so that we can chase them off. This morning there was a very persistent Heron who when he was chased away was flying around in a circle to land on on Lake then the other. I had to go out four times before it finally flew away.

The Geese were hiding their Goslings under their wings and were watching whilst the Heron was around. The Goslings would make a good meal for the Heron. As soon as the Heron had gone the Goslings were out and feeding. At this time of the year with the Fish spawning they are also an easy meal for the Heron. The Fish spawn in the reeds on the edge of the Lake. It is a bit of a frenzy with many male Fish chasing a female trying to fertilise her eggs. Many times we can see the frenzied group half out of the water, allowing a Heron to catch the smaller Fish or to stab the larger Fish with its long beak, scarring or killing them. The Heron wouldn’t be my favorite Bird.

Thats Thornton just behind the Ewe in the foreground.

All the Chicken free range.

Thornton has been mixing with the Ewes and their Lambs this evening. It started when I tried to get a few photographs for the Photo Page. A little feed was put out for the Ewes and Thornton decided to join in. The Ram wasn’t best pleased and gave Thornton a few head butts, that didn’t seem to worry him at all. Initially the Ewes were a little wary but soon allowed Thornton to get near their Lambs. We had to make Thornton come back to the Farm Yard as he may have gone into the Woods and got lost. He would eventually have come back on his own, but we couldn’t take the chance. When he decided it was time to return with a little encouragement you could see him jumping and prancing with excitement. Some of you may have seen it on the webcam.

The nine Ewes have given birth to twelve Lamb between them. All but two are white, the other being brownish rabbit colour with dark chocolate noses and feet. I tried to get a photograph of them but the Ewe took them away before I arrived with the camera. I will try to get some more photographs over the next few days.

We let the Chickens out of their House for the first time today. The first one came out very quickly, the rest taking nearly half an hour. We have left the Chicken House in one of the Horse areas until we have time to move it nearer to the Holiday Cottages. Thinking that we could confine them to the corral area we put some sheep netting on the fencing. That was a waste of time as they soon walked through the netting. They haven’t strayed far from their House and should be easy to put away tonight.

One of last years Lamb went missing again yesterday. I managed to convince Diane, Vicky and David that they would enjoy finding him. There was also a Ewe missing this morning. The way that the Ewes udder were looking when I looked at them yesterday I would not have been surprised if they had found her with Lambs. As it happens the Ewe was no where to be seen. I should think that she has hidden herself away to Lamb. If she doesn’t turn up in the morning I will need to find her.

As for the Lamb, he was found with a branch through his horns as I had found him last week. The branch was making it impossible for him to move. We have had a lot of Sheep and Lambs with horns who have never been caught up. This Lamb is making it a habit. We will need to keep watch on him, expecting that he is caught up when he is missing.

I have worked it out that the first Reindeer to Calf should do so in just over two weeks time. One of the Reindeer that was frightened by the Helicopter is not eating the amount of feed that the other two are eating, and she seems to have lost a bit of weight. The Veterinary said that this was a possibility and that she may abort the Calf, although she does still look pregnant. It wont be long until we find out.

We have lots of photographs for the Photo Page. I thought you would find Julia photographs of interest whilst on her stay at Denbury.

one!; Julia.

Lime Kiln in the woods; Julia.

I haven’t really had the time to walk the Wood as I really needed to do since I purchased it. Although the Wood joins our Fields I never have looked around it properly in fifteen years that we have lived here, so taking Julia and Chris for a look around gave me the opportunity to see a little more of it. For sure both will sleep well tonight after the walk.

It will take a few visits for me to take in all there is in the Wood. With the two Quarries and Lime Kiln I find it very interesting. It is also very undulating that makes it even more interesting and will make a very good nature walk. Today we found a couple of Deer foot prints and heard a Woodpecker hammering a tree.

Just before I moved into Denbury I got lost in the Wood. It was late one afternoon. I had gone to look over Denbury and decided to walk in part of our Wood. I decided to keep walking to see where the Wood finished. Some how I had managed to get into a part of the Wood where I was unable to see what way to get out. I was lost and it was starting to get dark. I wasn’t very happy to be in the situation that I was in, even less so when I came face to face with a dead Badgers head that I purposely been place in a fork of a tree at face height. I cant imagine why it had been put there. I went in one direction to get out of the Wood but there seemed to be no end and it was getting darker. I needed to make a decision to walk on way until I reached a road. Eventually when I was nearly unable to see as it was so dark I came to the edge of the Wood that went into a Field. I still could not see a road but kept walking. Eventually I saw the light of a House and made my way towards it. On entering the driveway of the house to find out where I was I heard a familiar voice from an open window. The voice turned out to be of a friend who I did not realise had move to the area. I had walked a good distance from Denbury and was grateful for the lift back.
