The Barn Owl Trust have been monitoring a Barn Owl nest site in Cornwall, since October last year, so that this year we could broadcast a nesting site. Barn Owls have nested in a nest box supplied by the Trust in a Barn at the location for a number of years. They have used one Barn to nest in during the nesting season and another close by during the Autumn and Winter.

A new bespoke nest box was constructed by the Trust fitted with an infra red camera, to give the best possible views inside the new nest box. All the wiring and the new nest box were installed into the nesting barn in the Autumn of last year, so that the Barn Owls could hopefully get use to seeing it and hopefully accept it for this years nesting.

The was always the chance that the Barn Owls would not use the new nest box. I don’t know about the Barn Owl Trust, but I was getting a little concerned that they may not like the new box and decide go else where to nest. Last week I got a phone call from the Trust telling me that the Barn Owls had started to use the the new nest box and were seen mating.

On Tuesday next we are hoping to start broadcasting from the nest site on our internal system to make sure that all is working as it should. If it is we should be live on the website within a week.

There will be two cameras at the nest site location. One in the nest box and one outside so that we can see the Barn Owls going back and forward to feed the Owlets when they hatch. A lot of work has gone in to this new project by the Barn Owl Trust and the owner of the property that the webcam will be broadcasting from. As long as all goes as it promises to be a great new webcam.

Where is it Bec?

Emmi and Sox went off to the Stud today for Emmi to be covered by a Stallion. It is 21days after she gave birth to Sox and she is due to come in to season tomorrow to be mated. She is only going to a Stud about an hour away from the Farm. As soon has she has been to the Stallion she will be returning, hopefully by the end of the week. We have put Lady in Emmi’s stable until she returns, so that we can let you see her for a change. I must look it up when she is due to Foal, going by memory I should think it is a bit over a month.

Thornton our pet Lamb is doing well. He is always hungry and call endlessly for a bottle. He follows everyone around hoping that they have a feed for him. Tass and Kye are not to pleased with the arrangement, and we wouldn’t trust them, not to get him off of their patch. For sure Ramsdem is not his Father or of the Lambs that have been born. It could only have been one of the cross Ram Lambs that we put in the pen last year when we managed to catch two that had been running free.

You will be pleased to know that the webcam in Delaware USA is now working and it is sending excellent pictures that we are able to see on out system. We can not put it on the website yet, as we need to make sure there is nothing in the location that might offend. As you may remember the location of the webcam is in an location where private houses can also be seen. The camera also needs to be move slightly to show a better view. I am trying to sort out a moving camera to send to Peter so that we can view other wildlife that is on Peters door step. When I as speaking to him the other evening he had a couple of Otters playing just in front of his house.

Duck and Duck again.

View from Aonoch Mor. Nevis Range. Scotland. from Judy.

Taken by my granddaughter last year on holiday in Devon and Cornwall. PM.

Pam, an episode with that name, could well have been made in our Village.

I have a lot of paperwork to catch up on tonight, so I will only update you on the remote Duck. It arrived back today. Jack has done an excellent job making it for me. I don’t like to admit it but it was a lot better job than I would have done. On the first photograph you can see the camera in between the Ducks eyes. Underneath at the rear you can see the steering propeller. In the second photograph you can see a little of the workings. Under what you can see is a lot more, including the electric engine, prop-shaft and the steering mechanics. Believe me there is very much more inside the Duck than you can see. Jack had not tried the Duck in water, so I tried it very briefly on the Lake this afternoon. I wasn’t going to let you see the first launch just in case something went wrong. It sat perfectly in the water and the control was faultless. I haven’t tried the camera, but Jack tells me that what he saw was good. I will put it on the water over the weekend and show it on the Lake webcam. I will put the day and time on the Forum in case you want to see it. I am not sure that I will be able to have the camera working, as I was let down the wire for the new Lake camera and did not receive it until late this afternoon. I thought that I should show you a photograph of the Duck just in case it decides to take a dive.

If any of you are considering purchasing a nest box, you wouldn’t go far wrong in looking at the boxes that you can access from the Denbury Farm webcam pages. Clicking on the nest box on the left hand side of the page will direct you the a better description.

Shelduck. Barry, Rye Harbour. It was not really meant for the Photo page.

Nothing seems to be coming together at the moment. I spoke to Peter in Delaware, USA. He hope to be able to get out to the webcam as soon as the weather gets better. We are hoping to see Bold Eagles, Brown Eagle and Osprey. The Osprey has already arrived. I also spoke to Simon in Spain about the Griffon Vulture. I have copied his email to me so that you can see a progress report.

I showed the climber the site and it is possible with ropes, harness and all the bits. He has a group climbing this week in Spain and then he has a five day trip to Morocco next week then he is back for a couple of days before his next trip, so we shall put the camera in the nest as soon as he is back. The easy nest site is still empty which is a pain, but that is nature. I was climbing yesterday on a face where I went into two nests to see if the eggs had hatched which they had not, but the problem is there is nowhere to send the signal too so I can only get stills images from them. I will keep you updated.
Cheers Simon.

As you can see that the location for the Griffon Vulture nest webcam is not easy to access, and is a bit of a challenge.

The other webcam that we are hoping to do is a Barn Owl nest. A new nest box, fitted with a camera was installed last October. The Barn Owls when they finish nesting roost in another barn at the location over the Winter, returning to the nest box in the Spring to start nesting again. They haven’t as yet returned to the nest box barn. We will just have to hope that they don’t go some where else.

Lower harbour at Fishguard very quaint cottages surround half of the harbour ,i can sit here for hours and enjoy the scenery and peace, well worth finding to visit , Marie.

A picture of the GEEP, strange eh. Elsie.

The Sky is a bit iffy at the moment. If the cloud lifts a little I will put Saturn on the webcam from about 8.pm. tonight. Just before I turned the webcam off last night I went through the menu of the camera that I was using to show Saturn. There were a couple of adjustments that I was able to do that made the picture a lot better. It was looking more like Saturn than what Elaine’s capture shot looked. We managed to get rid of the glare, that made the rings of Saturn look separate from the Planet. If I manage to get the webcam on you may see the picture change as I try to get a better picture. Elaine I am not complaining about your photograph. I am pleased that I have the photograph of the first time Mars was shown live on the Internet.

The equipment for the Griffon Vulture webcam should have been installed by now, except that the parcel that I sent to Spain has not arrived. I sent the parcel two weeks ago tomorrow, on what was meant to be a five day track-able service. When I tried to track it on Parcel Forces website, I was told that the parcel was not track-able.

Mr. Farmer, more pictures for the web site. The first picture: since several of you sent pictures of peacocks, thought I would submit picture of a peacock that visited my garden, except my peacock is a butterfly called White Peacock. Hope it shows up. Karen, Florida (USA)

Trying to put Mars on the webcam last night wasn’t very good. The Telescope went straight to Mars when I selected it, but the lens that I had was not powerful enough to get a good image. By the time that I was going to put the small image on, it clouded over. I went to put the Sun on the webcam this morning, but somehow I had lost the Telescope settings when I turned it off last night, so it would not have tracked it. Setting the Telescope needs to be set at night by selecting three stars. I will do that this evening. I will also try another camera that I have that may magnify Mars better than the camera that I used last night. I did put the Sun on the webcam this morning for a short time whilst I tried it. I was able to see a few flares. The only way that I could have kept it on was to move the Telescope manually. I didn’t have time for that. I will speak to the suppliers of the Telescope tomorrow to see what I can get to be able to show Mars closer.

We looked Emmi over today to see if her udder was starting to get larger. She is only a month away from Foaling so I would expect to see a change in her over the next two weeks. We need to get her over to Lady’s stable block where the camera is, but Willow still being with Lady is causing us a problem. We are going to try to wean Willow again on Tuesday or Wednesday. We have got a sedative from the Veterinary that we will give her for a few days. She is not getting a lot of milk from Lady now and her udder has nearly dried up. It is not going to be easy.

We fed the Badgers later tonight. I had hoped that the Fox would be waiting to feed, that I hoped would have stopped the Rats from coming out. I don’t like to put poison down because of the Owls and Buzzards. I have had to today or they will start to spread out and get to near to the Farm House. We rarely ever see Rats near the Farm Yard, thats the way I want to keep it. I have poisoned up on the lower Badger feeding place. Once we think that area has been cleared we will poison the main area. To stop the Bird getting the poison we have a baited box inside of a cage.

Peacock posing in North Wales. Close up of a Dandelion. Lynne.

Pony and Foal New Forest Hampshire. One of the Pit Ponies that were used at our Colliery, what an awful life they had. Elsie.

I asked my Friends who host the Ghost Cam about the person that the other Elsie saw at I.30 pm today. There was no one in the House at that time of the day. My Friends went shopping this morning and didn’t return until this evening. On looking at the webcam this evening, I can see a shadow on the wall that I have not noticed before. I am told that there is nothing to cause a shadow on the wall. Strange.

I am not sure what the Bird was that Mary asked about on the Forum. It did look a first like a Willow Tit that we regularly get in little groups of, up to eight at a time. Then a group of Willow Tits started feeding and it was obviously not one of them. It was very similar but different markings on it head.

I looked in Bird Book to see what the Bird was but could not find it. Whilst looking I came across the Griffon Vulture. It is a very big Bird, standing about three and a half feet tall with a wing span of eight foot. Simon was telling me that when they fly towards him when he is on the rock faces they look enormous. Spain have the largest European population. They can also be found in Asia and the Middle East. They lay one Egg. I believe Simon told me every other year. Incubation is around fifty days and are able to fly after one hundred and ten days. As long as all goes well with the installation of the equipment it promises to be an exciting webcam.

Sorry i didn’t witness the outcome of the Fox mating session last night. The way the pair were acting it looked imminent. They may still be together tonight, or a least another Dog Fox may be with the Vixen. I was a bit surprised that there were not more than one Dog, so it could well be the beginning of the mating. Although I suppose it could even be the end. What ever there are no Fox feeding as they would normally be when I put the feed out, so something is going on to keep the Fox away from food. I will put the Valley camera on again tonight.

I did see a Stag as I was panning the camera around to try to see the Fox. It was the far end of the valley. It kept to the edge of the wood and I only just managed to get sight of it.

At 6.pm the sky is quite clear, a few small clouds. I don’t know if it is going to stay like it. The forecast is for cloud. Mars comes in sight at about 8.pm in the southern sky. If it stays like it is a the moment, I will put the Telescope on. The cloud last night cleared but it was to late to start setting the Telescope up. As I said last night, this is the first time that I have tried to show a Planet, so I really don’t know how it will look on the webcam.

Hello Mr. Farmer, Karen in Stoke asked if I went into the little church on the beach – here are more photos. Looks as though some one’s been hitting the mead!! Beautiful ceiling, Julia

Steam Train leaving Kingsway station Devon. A lovely sight. Elsie

THE PHOTO OF THE MARE AND FOAL WAS TAKEN AT A LOCAL BEAUTY SPOT, IT WAS A VERY HOT DAY , BUT THE FOAL FOUND SOME SHADE!!! MARIE.

When I checked the webcams at about 8.pm last night I saw what looked like the last moments of a pair of Fox mating, they were on both webcam one and two. Did any one see any more than the last moments. It was just before they went out of view. I heard the Fox calling as I went to feed the Badgers this evening. There is a chance that it may happen again tonight.

Of an evening for the past few weeks we have had a lot of Starlings above the Farm. I should reckon there has been a thousand or maybe a little more. Don’t get to excited, it is pretty insignificant to a roost, but it is the first time that we have noticed them. So there must be more than there would normally be. I had a quick read on Starling this afternoon. Starlings do like woods, and will roost in them. We do have forty acres of wood surrounding the Farm. It is more likely that they have flown in for food, and return to a large roost. They will travel as far as twenty miles. I shouldn’t think that as the crow flies, the West Hay Starling Roost wouldn’t be much further. West Hay has a very large roost. Mind you I wouldn’t want a roost here. Neither would the local Farmer. And could you imagine how much Bird droppings there would be. I reckon it would be better to site a webcam in some one else’s back yard.

The first Snowdrops flowered here today, and the Daffodils along are driveway are coming up very fast. With the Horses being turned out until after Christmas, it seems a lot earlier. We are normally getting really fed up mucking the Horses out by this time of the year. With a bit of luck we have only a couple of months left.

For the past two days we have been walking the…

For the past two days we have been walking the Fillies around the farm, trying to get them prepared for the Auction later in the month. It is going to be difficult getting them prepared in time. If they are not, they will not make as much money as maybe they should. It is not only having them walking on a lead rope that is important, they need to have their muscles toned and their coats glistening. The only way to get them in that condition, is to work them out by walking and light trotting. Getting the Fillies coats looking tip top is to daily groom their coat, this will also help tone their muscles. There has been an Auction in Ireland for the past three days, that was shown on a webcam, but I only realised late this afternoon, with only a few lots, out of over 600 left to go. By the time I had let you know on the forum the sale would have been finished. At this Auction one yearling Colt made 2.4 million Euro. The next yearling sale on webcam is on the 9th of October for 3 days. With other sales to follow a few days later. See what you think. www.tattersalls.com

The squirrel feeder on webcam one has been knocked over. It happened on Sunday night. As it is on a wooden fence post, that was sunk into the ground to at least two and a half feet, I was a bit surprised to have found it laying on the ground when I went to refill the feeders. All the peanuts had been eaten. Looking at where the feeders are there were Badger foot prints. I think that probably a Badger knocked the post over whilst trying to get to the peanuts, Again the amount that the post was sunk into the ground, the Badger must have been very determined to get the peanuts.

Yes Karen, the Sheep were out of their fenced area this morning. Somehow the heavy gates that make up part of the fencing, were down. How they got knocked over I cant imagine, as the are heavy and were tied to keep them in place. The Sheep had not strayed far and we quickly got them back behind the fence once we had got it upright.

There have been a number of power cuts at the Lock of the Lowe’s over the past couple of days, it has stopped the webcams. Power cuts cause the computers to stop. When the power is on after the cut, the computer needs to be restarted from the site before the webcam can be got going. When I logged on this morning after the webcams had been restarted, there were a pair of Grebe on the Lock.

A number of you have commented about the rain that you have seen at Denbury over the past few days. The valley camera does tend to make even light drizzle look like heavy rain, although we have had a bit of that as well. The weather forecasts for our area at Denbury would have only been forty percent correct over the past couple of days.
