We were hoping to do a webcam with the Crown Estates in Scotland. Unfortunately it never happened and the equipment that we sent to them is being returned next week. In my telephone conversation with the Ranger at the location and my first contact, who with a promotion has moved to the Head Office we got talking about the possibility of doing a Golden Eagle. This year a platform is to be erected to encourage a nest site. It wont be this year that the Eagle will nest, if at all. If and when it does happen we will install a webcam at the location. The Ranger is to keep me updated with the site and I will let you know of any thing that happens.

Most years our drive is covered with thousands of Frog making their way to the Lakes to spawn. It normally happens from the middle of February into March. It is a nightmare trying to get in and out of the Farm as if we are not careful and move the Frogs out of the way some will get run over. Now that we have the gates installed at the entrance of the drive not so many will die from uninvited vehicles. With the camera that we installed last year down the drive overlooking the Lake and Reindeer Field we will be able to use it to see the Frogs.

Kestrel Chicks from last year. This is a possible webcam that we may do this year. I will keep you up to date on how we progress.

Here are a few photos of The Valley of Rocks, just outside of Lynton – taken the day after the “Big Blow” in 1987 – blue skies conceal what had happened overnight!

1) The helicopter we saw as we pulled into the car park;

2) The rocky outcrop where the video was shot – just visible is the helicopter filming the video – the man was videoing the events with a MASSIVE camcorder. How things have changed now you can record video on mobile phones!!!;

3) Far right – Macca, just to his left, hidden by other people you can just make out Linda’s blond hair(!) and her turquoise top!;

4) Probably the worst photo of P.M. ever taken – don’t know who the other bloke is!

The photograph of the Kestrel Chicks is from a site in Shropshire that we have been asked to broadcast this year as. The location at a private property that has a haunted 1300 Farm House that we may also broadcast from.

We are still waiting for the US Virgin Island under water webcam to start. I sent the equipment over some months back. We have been promised February as a start date, but I do have my doubts about if it will ever happen.

There is also outstanding an answer about the Meerkat webcam. We have been talking to the people for a few months. It would be a very popular webcam if we get it. There will be two views. One outside and one under ground. Hopefully we will hear soon.

Starting from number six there are five new photographs on the Photo Page.

Only one day of photographs left.

What can you make of this tree ladies, from my cousins collection. Sue.

These photos are just some of the owls at the Rutland Falconry and Owl Centre. Merrilyn.

This morning I heard the the Goose that had woken us for the past few morning as I was feeding the Horses. When I checked the webcam there was one that I managed to get on the webcam. It was on the Lake for half an hour. I wondered if it may have been the Goose that lost he Goslings and Gander earlier in the year. For a change for as well as the Goose there were a pair of little Grebe and a few Mallard.

I spoke to Peter from the Lock this afternoon. On the 3rd or 4th of January there is going to be a talk at the Lock on the Wild Cat and we are going to broadcast it live on Wildlife TV. It will be a first for us. Although the webcams are all real-time live they all concentrate on on Animals and Birds. Never on humans. Peter is sending me a copy of the poster advertising the talk. I will put it on the Photo Page when I receive it. Peter or myself will keep you up to date with all the information.

These were taken out of my dining room window. The hornets were bald faced hornets, and they abandon the nest after the first freeze. We are going to take down the nest and give it to the Nature Center . The tree is a crab apple, and there were 5 squirrels in it at one time. Penny, Chicago Chicago Chicago.

I spoke to Peter at the Lock earlier today. Peter tells me that SWT would like us to host a webcam from Montrose Basin. The webcam will be installed on a raft at the basin where we will be able to see various Waders as well as other breeding Sea Birds. Common and Grey Seals also visit the Basin that hopefully we will also be able to watch. I will let you know more about it when I know myself.

There are five photographs on the Photo page starting from number six, sent in by Vicky.

Baby Great Tit that had to be rescued after it flew into a neighbours window, after it had a drink and a rest it flew off to join his friends again. Vicky.

Moorhen was taken at a local park in derby. Vicky.

We have fitted a camera on a new Swallows nest that we found this morning in the same barn that we have shown previous Swallows nests. There are three eggs in the nest that are now being incubated.

Last Monday I received an email from a European Nature Conservation body asking if we would broadcast a Barn Owl Nest Cam for them. With the Owlets ready to leave the Barn Owl Trusts Nest over the coming weeks we emailed back accepting the invitation. Unfortunately since then I have not had a reply back. That is not to say that we wont, but being that the Owls are incubating the eggs it would be good to start from the beginning of the nesting. This is the second nesting this year of these Barn Owls. As soon as I hear back from the body I will let you know. UPDATE. We have received the reply and we will be broadcasting the new Barn Owl Nest Cam with sound by tomorrow. Watch out for the new Thumbnail.

The Nature Conservation Body have a close relationship with The Barn Owl Trust, who next year will also have sound and hopefully a day and night camera so that the Barn Owls Nest Cam can be seen in colour in the daylight hours.

A few weeks back I told you about the underwater webcam in the US Virgin Islands that we have been asked to do. All the equipment has been sent to the Island. Michael the person who has asked us to broadcast for them had a meeting with the Port Authority and Pier Manager at the site. They are going to recommend to the Board, full approval of the project at the August 6th meeting. The webcam will be sited at a different location than we first were told, and it will be under a different US department who have other sites that they would consider webcams including a beach that the Turtles nest at.

There has been mentioned that the quality of the Red Squirrel and Pine Martin Camera is not a clear as it might be. The Broadband connection at the Lock of the Lowe’s is quite low. To get a good picture from the Osprey nest it mean using a lot of the available bandwidth on that webcam causing the other webcams to use a very low bandwidth. When the Osprey nesting finishes the bandwidths will be adjusted so that both webcams at the Lock have good images.

I should think that anyone who has seen the Goslings on the Lake must as been as, well I really don’t know what words to use, shocked, surprised, flabbergasted I really cant believe it, there has got to be some other explanation. Going by the size I can see on the webcam they look the same Goslings that went missing, and for sure the nearest Lake to the Farm is well over a mile away.

This morning one of our Holiday guest told us that the Goose had returned. I went to feed her this afternoon at about 2.pm. There was no sign of any other Geese or Goslings on the Lake. After I had returned to the Farm House there was an almighty commotion as a Goose attempted to land in the Farm Yard, it was being chased away by a number of Doves. It is starting to sound bizarre to me, and I am here. Thinking that it was the Goose and she was flying towards the Lake I turned the Lake webcam on to watch her landing. I left my private view of the Lake on, and pair of Geese came into view, and then two Goslings came into view, I then put the webcams on and on the near Lake webcam I saw another Gosling. I returned to the Lake. When I saw the Goslings close up it was obvious by the slightly smaller size than those that went missing.

Where this new family has come from I have no idea, other than it is the other pair of Geese that were coming and going as the first pair were incubating their eggs. They must have nested very close by. What ever it would not have been very far away, maybe in the small pond next to the large Lake, and they had stayed well hidden, but surly we would have seen them. There were a number of our Holiday Guest fishing the Lake last week, they didn’t say they had seen any Geese. The only other place that they may have nested is in our fields across the lane, at the end of our drive. The Stream passes in those fields, the grass is very high in the first one, they could have stayed well hidden there.

We only removed the electric fencing two days ago. We will put it back up and take other measures to try to protect them and do all we can to try to keep them from being taken as the last family were, but I don’t think that they will survive, what ever we do.

A pair of Tufted Duck have also come on to the lake. They have been here for three days. One of the Moorhens doesn’t seem best pleased to have them as company. I hope he doesn’t frighten them away.

There are five new photographs on the Photo page, starting from number six.

Another photo I took at the airport last week. Julia.

Watering the garden found this little frog hopping around. Liz.

Lady had a Colt Foal last night and we managed to miss it. There is always a first time, missing Lady giving birth was the first time that I had ever missed one of my Horses Foal, and I am not best pleased about it. I had checked Lady yesterday evening when she came in from the Horse field and there was no sign of her Foaling. I put the alarm clock on for 2.am. Lady was a bit fidgety but showed little sign of Foaling. I woke again a 4.pm and had the shock of my life when I saw the Foal.

There are so many things that can go wrong and if it does you could well find a dead Foal. It happened a number of times when we had Cows Calving and it is not nice for any animal to have their offspring born dead or die shortly after being born. Unfortunately the Foals feet must have caught the side of Lady’s Virgina causing some nasty tearing of the skin tissue inside and out, that has needed Lady to have twenty stitches. It could have been worse for if the tear had been larger it could have caused tearing to urethra that could have been life threatening.

If you were watching whilst the Veterinary was stitching Lady, you would have seen that we had a piece of string tightened by a length of wood. It is called a twitch, it acts as a natural type of sedative by releasing . I should imagine that you would think that it was barbaric and would be painful, I can promise you that it is not. We have given Lady painkillers and she will need antibiotic for a couple of days, she should then be fine.

The Barn Owl Trust aviary webcam has been changed to the inside of the Barn that the Nest Cam is situated. You will be able to see the Barn owls going in and out of the nest box when the Adults are feeding the Owlets. A new webcam page and thumbnail will be put on the site over the next couple of days.

Lock of the Lowe’s fitted the PTZ camera that we supplied them. It will be showing the Red Squirrel and Pine Martin feeding area. It will be able to be moved, so you should be able to see a lot more of the Locks wildlife. There needs to be some adjustment made to the broadcasting to make it a much better picture.

The grannys bonnets are in my garden, taken today. Barbara.

We got our first pictures of the Griffon Vulture Nest webcam last night. The picture was very good, but unfortunately it went off soon after. Simon was going away for a couple of days and I had no way of contacting him. The Internet connection in Anderlucia is by Satellite, it having a low broadband speed that looks as if it may cause it to be continuously cutting off. I am going to speak to my expert tomorrow to see if we can get it to work more reliably.

I am not very happy that the USA Osprey camera is not working. I should think that the eggs cannot be far from hatching. When I phoned Peter in the USA on Friday I was told that he is away on holiday until the Monday after tomorrow. It would not be the best time for the webcam to be off. When he comes back from his holiday we will have to see if we can make some arrangement for the webcam to be reset when he is away, or the webcam will not be worth having. I am sorry about it.

The Gosling managed to make it through another day, I must admit I am surprised. The Goose is taking them to the island of a night, It is definitely helping. I had made arrangements for one of my Lads to collect four Canada Geese Goslings today, but they had been sold without the person who was buying realising. After the disappointment of loosing the Geese and Goslings every year, we decided to get two pairs to live on the lake permanently. If we buy Gosling we will be able to get them to get use to being housed of a night when we feed them inside, and they should also stay on the Farm or at least stay around the Farm. I spoke to another person this afternoon who is confident that he will be able to get me two pairs, hopefully with a couple of weeks or so. We are also going to try get a pair of breeding Turkeys.

Shelduck. This photograph was sent to me by Barry at Rye Harbour. It was sent for other reasons than the Photo page. I hope he does not mind.

With the amount of work that we seem somehow to be doing this spring I have not had a lot of time to look for nest site around the Farm. Because of the obscure places that the Birds other than the Swallows manage to find to nest, nest can be difficult to find. By accident this afternoon we found three in the main Barn. Two are in a haystack that we have started to use to feed the animals with. We will need to use the hay in the stack but we will now have to be very careful to make sure that we do not disturb any of the nests. I have positioned the Sheep camera on the hay stack where a Robin is going in and out to feed her chicks. The nest is about nine inches into the stack and I will try tomorrow to put a miniature camera close to the entrance. I wont promise that we will see much of the chicks, but we will do the best we can. At the other end of the stack is what looks as if it maybe a Wrens nest. We will watch to see if we are right when we are in the Barn. Also in the Barn roof but it is unfortunately to high for the camera, is a Blackbird nest.

Lindsay mentioned in her entry on the Forum last night that one of the Badgers was waiting for the feed before before I had time to turn around. For the past week it has been waiting very close to the path that I take to get to the Sett. It follows me just out of view of the webcams below the lower part of the webcam. I have been trying to stop it as I really don’t want pet Badgers, this one is becoming far to brave. Last year I managed to stop it.

I received the email below from Simon this morning. If all goes well we will get the webcam on the website quite quickly.

Hi, I have good news as I have been checking the nest several times and I was there yesterday putting the panel in place and running the wires down from the nest where the chick sits happily. The parents have been returning regularly so today I have to focus the camera, Gerry down in the house will tell me via the mobile while I am in the nest. I will be in the mountains all day so I will send you an email before I leave Gerry’s House at the end of the day and then you can check out the nest. Cheers Simon

The Barn Owl Trust nest webcam computer developed a fault last night. I believe that it had to be replaced today. It was a bit of a journey back to Cornwall for the Trust to fix the problem, but it was worth the trouble to see the Nesting Barn Owls. There are many reasons for the webcams to stop working. Believe me none of us in the main would want them not to be broadcasting. I get a few problems with my broadband connection temporally going down for a few seconds. Then the webcam broadcasting point have to be restarted. Another problem that occurs is that a broadband connection is slow making the webcam to stop. Cameras also breakdown. The worse one I had was last year when my Denbury Farm URL address got lost in the system and my website could not be accessed for nearly two weeks. Although it was nothing to do with me, I had to pay for it to be found.

We have started to knock down the Tree House in the main Horse field. It was put up nearly fifteen years ago. My two Lads when aged about seven wanted a Tree House, but were frightened for it to be in the Woods, so we built one for them up at the top of the hill in the field. They only ever used it once to sleep in, and that was when our friends stayed in it with the Lads.

We are going to rebuild the Tree House come Wildlife Watching hide, as last year a number of our Holiday Guest especially Children said that they would have liked to have used it. Arnie had made it to dangerous for it to be used. When it is hot he stands under the Tree House, but every time he put his head up he would cause a little bit of damage. The little bits have now become major. The rebuild is going to make the Tree House usable again, so that it can be used by our Holiday Guest or their Children, as a Wild Life Watching hide, or just for an adventure for the Children.
