This was posted on Loch of the Lowes earlier today – sad reading really as it seems that our summer is nearly over and Autumn is approaching !

Well folks, it looks like there is no longer any doubt our beloved female osprey has left on her autumn migration as we haven’t seen her on the loch now since Monday. We all wish her a safe and swift journey to her wintering grounds, and a most welcome return next spring if she’s able. There is every possibility she will make it back to Loch of the Lowes in 2015- is she does it will be a truly remarkable 25 years for her at this nest! What change that 25years has seen- and how far and well the osprey population has recovered in that time too! What a great symbol she is of this conservation success story- truly inspiring I am sure you’ll agree.

This time of year is an exciting one for all osprey watchers- there are young birds and transiting birds in the skies all over the UK. Everyone can help with osprey research science and conservation in a very practical way during migration times- here’s how:

Anytime you are near any water in the UK spring and autumn, keep an eye out for ospreys , even if it not a know nesting site- they often drop by on route.
Look closely through binoculars or telescopes and see if you can see coloured leg rings ( known as a Darvic ring) or satellite tracking device aerials on the birds:
A satellite tracking aerial on a young osprey- SWT
A satellite tracking aerial on a young osprey- SWT

Take photos- lots of photo’s! Digital photos can often be enlarged and enhanced to read leg ring numbers not visible to the naked eye.
Every leg ring sighting is valuable- it helps us know which birds survive, which routes they take and where they end up!
Submit your sightings to your local osprey project, or to ospreys@swt.org.uk or to websites such as: http://www.roydennis.org or the European wide EURING scheme at http://blx1.bto.org/euring/main/
We are of course desperately hoping that someone somewhere in the UK (or in France/Spain/Portugal) will spot one of our young ospreys this autumn, such as Blue YD or even Blue 44- they could well be out there so eyes to the skies folks and let us know!

It is always sad when the Scottish osprey season draws to a close , and we all feel a little bereft without our favourite birds, but we can start looking forward to next year now!

Mick thinking of you and good luck with your eye injection at least it is definitely helping you without a doubt !

It is very quiet on the Forum where are you all ??? especially you Karen ! Are you managing to have much sleep lately ?

Mick I know what you mean about the webcams as I have had problems getting onto them and cannot view any on the Loch of the Lowes website unless it is my computer going on the blink !!!!

The tale end of Bertha hit us yesterday after a quiet early morning and then torrential rain and very strong winds ! We went to a surprise 70th birthday BBQ yesterday for my friend and had great fun running to take shelter in the gazebo with a full wine glass in our hands but towards the end of the afternoon the sun came out and all was settling down, thank goodness !

Jan (Herts) we are off to Little Munden for a few days this week and then the following week as the girls are away so it will be funny staying there without the them ! and then when they return they are then collecting their new baby which is a lovely Labradoodle called Mabel and jolly good luck to them as they will have lots of sleepless nights with a puppy ! just like having a baby eh ????

Have a good day everyone

Mr Farmer, It looks like your cams are going down one after the other. I wonder if you have got a bug or virus on your system as it seems very strange. I have noticed that the Badgers are coming out a lot and don’t they look big, some look like Bears, the Bats are very active in the barn and I would expect them to be sleeping in there during the day light hours and possibly in the Owl box or a dark corner of the barn. I take it that the geese have not returned yet as some usually stay put apart from going out to farm fields to eat on some of the crops and then return at night.
Betty & Jenny, I have to go for another eye injection next Wednesday, it seems to come round so quickly but the last three times, I have not really felt it being done, so not to bad.
I do hope everyone is starting to feel a lot better now as I know nearly every one on this sight is going through something or other, so to all Get Well soon.
Mick

Thanks Mick. Hope your eyes are doing OK. We had a good day today. The lovely red cardinal was in the fuschia basket eating the seed heads. Pat got dive bombed by a Male Robin (which is 3 times the size of the Uk Robin) in the front garden as the car is parked next to the tree with a nest with young ones. We also watched the hummingbird take nectar from the 2 red gladioli that are in flower at the moment. Have a lovely weekend. Betty Canada

Betty, I am glad that he finally got down to calling you, but to actually deny saying that he had arranged a phone call to you and not apologized for his not remembering was a bad thing, still some or most of the news was not to bad and hopefully all will be OK in the end.
Mick

Mick he finally called Wednesday and his first comment was I am from Princess Margaret what can I do for you? I said “it is what you could have done for me on Monday that I was calling about”. He denied any appointment although I have a printout of both my appointments and would NOT discuss the absence of the phone call. He finally said “well are you ready to hear your results now!!” by then I was in tears. The news was good but it didn’t feel good as it should have. There is still A 10% chance of it being malignant but he would recommend a wait and see approach but he said in the original appointment if it was 10% the local gynecologist could remove just the cyst or the cyst and the ovary.
I am going to report him to the hospital administration and luckily we have a web site where we can rate individual drs. I see my gastric specialist on Monday 11th and then the general surgeon and the gynecologist on the 13th (Wednesday) so should be able to make a plan. Thanks for thinking of me and hope you are OK. Betty Canada

Betty, That’s downright cruel to keep you waiting like that, you would think someone could inform you of the results. I suppose you will have to keep trying to call them or if they don’t answer the phone then contact the hospital main principal. That could do you more damage just waiting for the outcome of those results.
Mick

Ok Mick. It is only going to be between 22-25 degrees for the whole of the coming week. Frustrating at the moment as the Phone call from the specialist due Monday at 4pm never came!! Hubby called at 10 to 5 and the secretary couldn’t or wouldn’t give an explanation and I can’t get through today. Terrible service!! Betty Canada

The Geese left with their 5 Goslings today. All 7 landed on the new lake last night with the Swans that gave them a hard time. This morning they were in the field next to the lake grazing, so they must have left about midday.

Oh Mick. Sounds like you have had a fun time!! It is still cool here in Canada, we have sent you the hot weather. Apparently in the North of our village by the river there is a bald eagle. We shall have to take our chairs and sit near there with the camera. Fingers crossed. Happy week everyone. Betty Canada

Oh Mick what are you like !!!! hope you are fully recovered today ?

We are in the middle of a thunderstorm at the moment lots of flashes and thunder and really heavy rain but it will do the gardens the world of good !!!! but still very hot !!!

Hi Mr Farmer what was going on at the lake this afternoon ? With the rowing boat going out to the island, was it collecting fishing line from the reeds.

Jenny. I did have a bit of a lay in this morning till about 8.30 and the wife got up about 6.0 but we were both still aching backs, legs, neck and arms. We do tend to have these crazy days when we go mad then spend days recovering from them. I had a hypo half way trough the work yesterday and another today about 4.0pm but over it now.
Mick slightly recovered.

Oh dear Mick and poor Wifey as I thought she wasn’t keen much on driving anyway ! No wonder you two were pooped at the end of the day ! Why not change the bedroom one in the winter months, it just might be a bit easier for you !!! Hope you both had your lie in this morning !

Hi everyone, Just popped over to B&Qs at Reading to get 2 new ceiling fans with lights as our others were a bit outdated. We hit this roundabout over the M4 on the Reading to Basingstoke Road and it must have been at least 6 lanes going round it and my wife just panicked as we missed our turn off and had to go around again. She thought we might end up in Wales or London and all this because Farnborough only had one in stock and we needed two. Anyway we managed to get them and get home again safely. On arriving home I started to take the old one down and refit the new ones which took me two hours before my main meal and another two hours after by then we were really feeling both ill from it all as I had a shower before going out and had to have another after all that work and a complete change of cloths again that day, now we a just aching all over. I was debating weather to change the bedroom ones but not now, they my have to wait till at least next year. I do wish a storm would come through here and clear the air.
We could have ordered them on line to be delivered the next day which would have been yesterday but we had one of those cards that if you shop on a Wednesday then you get 10% off the price and to top it all we actually drove around that roundabout a couple of years ago and it was only the usual 3 lanes then, but again it was my fault as I should have checked it out on Google Earth before hand.
A very sick and fed-up Mick but looking forward to a good lay in tomorrow morning.

Hi Jenny, yes the storm hit here around half five, well it went around us as we are in a little valley, we didn’t get the rain but had a good lightning show, someone posted a video on ‘spotted in standon’ on facebook of a lightning strike nearby 🙂

Hi Jan just a quickie we left Little Munden at around 4.00 pm and the sun was still shining and hot, then went to have a quick look at Hatfield House and a wander around and then headed back on the M25 when it started raining around 6pm but no rain at home ! Kate’s parents live in St Neots and had terrible driving problems with the storm and had to sit in their car on the driveway for half an hour as they couldn’t get out because of the heavy rain !

Nice to read the good news about your eye Mick, Shirley’s eye always looked dreadful after her injections so you were lucky that day then !

Off to look at the webcams mow

Jenny x

Hi Jenny, so pleased you had a lovely time at Hatfield House, yes we did have a very hot weekend, I think it was slightly hotter on Friday, you missed the thunder storms, although we had a cracking storm Sunday afternoon, hope you weren’t travelling home in it, we saw a lot of lightning :-/
So pleased your eye injection went well this time Mick, Betty hope you get the good results on the 28th, sending lots of positive thoughts your way 🙂
Still grey clouds here, but a little breezy this morning, so hoping its not as sticky and muggy today,I think we have more hot weather and storms forecast towards the end of the week 🙁
My bird feeders were very quite at the weekend but have now got lots of baby blue, great and coal tits visiting and have had 2 baby woodpeckers, a couple of weeks ago I had a bullfinch family visit, 2 adults and 2 babies, really lovely bird I hadn’t seen any around here for years, so was a lovely treat 😀
I still haven’t seen the kingfisher on the wire either Mick.
