The Female Reindeer is still missing. Again she has been seen on the boundary of the Reindeer Field. I thought that I had got away with the radio interview this morning. The arrangement was that I would get a phone call at about 7.45am to go through what the procedure would be. Nearly ten minutes later I had still not got the call so I decided to feed the Reindeer. Just as I had opened the door to leave the phone rang. I nearly didn’t answer it but they have put out info about the lost Female, so I really had to.

At about 11.30pm last night there were deer in the Valley, The first that I have seen for months. There were two Doe and a Kid Roe Deer. I think that it may have been Doe and Kid from last year and this years Kid. The Kid was running and playing. I must admit I was pleased to see them. I should think that there have been more in the Valley over the past months, although we have not seen any of their tracks near were we normally see them. The Cattle that we have had in the Valley have made a lot of muddy areas on the paths so any Deer footprints would have stood out.

Starting from number six there are five new photographs on the Photo Page taken by seven year old Finn on his Holiday at Denbury.

A view of the Bristol Channel from the train.

A toadstool at the top of the valley at Denbury.

Smuggler and Thornton.

If any of you were watching the Reindeer field this afternoon you may have seen three Birds. They were to far away to be easily recognised but they were a pair of Buzzards with this year youngster’s. It is mainly above this area they they are hunting for food. I should think that the Buzzards nested in this area.

On my walk through the Valley this afternoon I believe that I saw a Rabbit with Myxomatosis. I was a bit of a way from the Rabbit so I could be wrong. The Myxi virus causes tumors on the skin but is noticeable around the eye and nose. The Rabbits with the virus usually die within a couple of weeks, although some Rabbits are immune from it.

Cutting the grass to make the hay has definitely brought the Buzzard and Owls to the Valley. Last night the Owl was on the pole a couple of times, and the Buzzard on and off for most of the day. With the grass cut it makes it easier for the Voles to be seen by both the Owls and Buzzard. With a bit of luck both will start hunting the Valley for a lot of their food. There are also a lot of Rabbits in the Valley. The new cameras digital zoom makes it easier to get close up to the Birds and to get better images. I am still getting use to the new cameras control as you have probably noticed. I also will need to get some more infra red lamps placed so that most of the valley can be viewed. I will keep an eye out for the Buzzards soaring above the Valley, if I see any I will try to follow them on the camera.

The weather forecast seems to be letting us down again. It promised a lot warmer weather with a bit of cloud and wind. Lots of cloud, little wind and chilly. Tomorrows forecast is now a bit different from what they said last night. I can see that we are not going top make our hay before the rain that is promised for Friday. I know I keep on about it, but the Met Office is a sad excuse, in any other business there would be many heads rolling with the times that they get things wrong. A couple of weeks ago we were told that we would be able to get forecasts for months ahead. They are unable to get the next 24 hours correct, so how they will manage months ahead I really don’t know. Some years ago we had forecast for long periods ahead. It fizzled out very soon after it started.

There are five photographs on the Photo page starting from number six sent in by Karen.

These Photographs were not taken by me. My daughters Partner Steve ,took these for me and Emailed them for us to go on the Gallery. I hope you enjoy them. Karen. Stoke.

We started to make our hay today. Not quite as late as last year, but later than we would want. The grass seed would be ready to drop so when the gray is turned to let it dry evenly a lot of the seed will be left on the ground when it is baled. Early this morning the grass was cut and this evening it was turned for the first time. It will be turned again every day in the hope that we can bale it at the latest on Thursday evening as the forecast is for rain on Friday. We normally would like five days to make hay but for the past two years we have needed to take our chances as the hasn’t been many five days periods without rain. We managed to make thirty bales about five weeks ago. The forecast at the moment is giving us a chance, so with a bit of luck we can make our hay.

I had hoped with the new camera being able to look straight up into the sky that we may have been able to see the Buzzards hunting for food for their Chick in the Valley. There has not been one year in all of the time that we have lived here have they not hunted in the Valley except for this year when the are hunting in the small paddock that we kept Smuggler and Sonny. The three of the Buzzards can be seen in the trees most days. Unfortunately the nearest camera to the paddock is unable to look upwards very far. I am hoping now that we have cut the grass in the valley it will make it more open for the Buzzard to hunt. There are a lot of Rabbits for the Buzzards to catch there so we may be lucky. We have nearly finished the kitchen and cottage so next week I will be able to spend a little more time on the Diary and camera.

The sudden appearance of a strange light in the corner of the nestcam is, we think, a spider’s web/nest that is in front of the camera lens. The movement is the spider crawling across the lens. We are reluctant to go into the building at present as the two oldest owlets have not left the barn yet and we do not want to risk flushing them out. Again we will monitor the owlets’ activity and will review the situation if any circumstances change. Matt. BOT.

Starting from number six there are five new photographs on the Photo page. Three from Vicky and two from Jack.

Badger feeding at Denbury taken from the hide. Vicky.

Woodpecker at Denbury. Vicky.

Harlequin Ladybird. Vicky.

Gordon the Goose. Jack

Jack and Brian on Gordon’s maiden voyage. Jack.

As you can see from the photographs that Jack sent to me yesterday, Gordon is working very well. Brain in the red shirt, I have never met Brian, bit of an exhibitionist with that colour shirt if you ask me, and Jack worked on making Gordon. Gordon is in a box on his way home to me, and will be here tomorrow. I will find the time to show you him working with the camera over the coming weekend. I don’t know about Brian but Jack unfortunately is taken and unavailable, just in case any of those seeing his photograph are bowled over by his obvious desirability.

We managed to get the new Valley camera set up and working today. It is going to be a vast improvement on the old camera with the amount of panning around that we do so that we can see the large variety of wildlife that visits the valley. I don’t know about you, but I get very annoyed when I see the wildlife but we are to slow to focus before it has moved away. The new camera has about the same zooming capability but a larger wide angle view, that makes it able to see more of the Valley. At night time the cameras wide vision and infra red lamps will stand more chance of seeing the wildlife’s eyes that we can then follow and zoom in on, getting immediate good images with the automatic focus. The camera also has a windscreen wiper that I have tried and have found very good.

We have still to fix the infra red lamps to the camera, so we will be unable to use it of a night time until we have, hopefully that maybe tomorrow, but what ever it will be by the weekend. You will also have to be patient, as the camera is controlled from a computer and we will have to get use to this different way of controlling the camera.

TREES WITH A REALLY STRANGE ORANGE BARK AT PICTON CASTLE. LYNNE.

We had a bit of a gale here on Saturday night. A tree in the Farm Yard was snapped and whilst taking Tass, Kye and Thornton on their walk last evening, a large tree on the left hand side of the valley was seen to been blown down. I will have to walk the Valley this afternoon to see if any other damage has been done.

A couple of you have remarked on how scruffy Ewy is looking. As you know we have had problems catching her to be able to have her fleece shorn. As we have been unable to catch her it is now dropping naturally. Since we have turned the Horses out this year Ewy is becoming a little braver. She has started to come very close to the gate. A couple of times she has even followed Breeze and Arnie out of the Horse field, nearly to their stables. We feed Willow and Gypsy in the field and over the past few days Ewy has started to eat some of the Fillies feed out of their bowls with them. If we are patient I reckon that we will be able to catch her. She does need to be checked over and to have her feet trimmed. We will then let her go free range again.

The new Barn Owl Trust nest camera is now working and we hope to have it on the web site within a day or two. The camera where you will be able to see the Barn Owls going into the nest box we hope will be working soon. When you see the webcam you may think that it is very light in the nest box. It is in fact very dark, and it is only possible to see the Barn Owls by using an infra red lamp.

We are also going to put the Osprey nest site from Delaware in the USA within the next week. Peter has got to raise the camera a little and he also needs to focus the camera slightly. I will be sending Peter a Pan Tilt and Zoom camera so that we are able to see more of the wildlife in Indian River Bay.

I am waiting to hear from Simon in Andalucia about the Griffon Vulture webcam. A new ariel was sent to him last week, as the distance was more than we allowed for with the wireless signal from the mountain range to the computer.

We put up an infra red light in place for the new Lake camera, to overlook the Island at night and to see what may be lurking about that may be a threat to the Goslings when they hatch. The Valley infra red lamps bulbs failed a few night ago. We replace the bulbs today.

At 8.15pm there was a very pregnant Red Deer Hind in the Valley. She wouldn’t have long to go before she gives birth.

Here’s the latest new butterfly that just emerged on Thursday. It’s called a Buckeye. Karen, Florida (USA)

Looking from the Farm House kitchen we are able to see part of the Horse field. If I hadn’t of put a hedge behind the pond that is in the Farm Yard, we would be able to see a lot more of the field. The hedge is also overgrown and instead of a hedge there are trees. But it did not stop me from seeing five or six Red Stags from our window this afternoon. They were not there for very long but I put them on all three webcams. Going by the Forum none of you saw them.

The Stags were frightened by tree felling in the woods on the right hand side of the valley and unfortunately were panicking. The woods did until a year ago belong to the County Council, but they sold them with some Farm land on the other side of the wood. I really should have tried a little harder to have purchased them, but I thought that the price that they made at Auction was too high. Twenty more acres of the wood are to be sold in June with a Farm. The woods will be in separate lots and I may consider bidding. The wood behind the trees in the middle of the valley will be part of the sale. We own all of the wood on the left hand side of the valley.

The new owner of the wood obtained permission to fell forty seven trees in the 10 acres that he owns. Most are Oak. The wood does need thinning and I would have thinned it myself, but it is a shame to see Oak trees felled, and off course it does frighten wildlife with the noise the felling makes.

The Stags would never have been in the Horse field if it were not for the felling of the trees. They must have run through the wood until there only way was to come out near the Farm House, then they ran into the wood near the Tree House, coming out immediately into the corner of the valley field, crossing from right to left in front of the trees in the middle of the valley and into our wood on the left hand side. I should think that they are lying low in our wood. It happened so fast that I only recorded in panic, the cameras were going every where so until I check the recording I wont know what I saw, but I am sure there where a couple of Royal Stags amongst the five or six. They may well graze in the valley tonight if they are in the wood, so I will leave the valley webcam on for most of the night.

Thornton went home with one of my Lads last night. He is still alive and doing well, but kept the house up through the night with his bleating.

I too was a little surprised on seeing two Lambs this morning when I went into the barn to make up the Horse feeds. I had only checked the Ewes udders a day before. A few of the Ewes were quite large, but two of them have been like that for a few weeks now.

It is Dolly who has Lambed. They are both Ram Lambs, both looking very healthy and strong. What I cant make out is who is the Father. Going by their colour they cant be Ramsdens, his off springs, even as crosses would not have the spots that they have. I have been trying to work it out all day. I cant remember any young Ram Lambs being in with the Ewes, that would have been that mature to have been able to mate with the Ewes and Father the Lambs.

It was a pity that the webcam was not on the Ewes when Dolly Lambed. A week ago when we had a load of bales of straw delivered, the high load hit the cable and broke it. I was so busy last week that did not get the time to repair it. On checking the Ewes again today I reckon that there is at least one of the Ewes that is going to Lamb very soon, and maybe more. I will keep an eye on them and probably put the Ewes on instead of Emmi and Sox after 10.pm. unless any look as if they are going to Lamb. I will also now and then change the webcams over.

The Lock of the Lowe’s new camera is very clear and is located in the Osprey nest. Being a pan, tilt and zoom it promises to be able to get some fabulous nest viewing positions. It should also be able to show the Ospreys leaving and returning to the nest. Peter had hoped to have got the PTZ camera that I supplied fitted in the last couple of days, but it does not look as though he has. A CCTV manufacturer is supplying us with a new camera that we will install down the valley. We were going to change the one that is installed now before the Summer as it is quite difficult to adjust the focus when trying to view close up at the end of the valley, when watching the Deer. The new camera is a posh affair. It has an automatic focus as do most of our other cameras, and we should be able to look high into the sky with the tilt that it has, making it possible to watch the Buzzards soaring. If we are lucky it will also have a 36x zoom, this will when at wide angle give a larger view of the valley. I will have to get a tower to install it on, as the post that the valley camera is now on is a telegraph pole, that has started to lean. We wont be able to fix the IR lamps to the side of the camera as we do now, so it will mean having to install them at different positions and angles around the valley.

The Dingle peninsular in Ireland, last October, Thanks, Rose (FF)

This a wonderful place to go if you like walking. Clumber Park part of Sherwood Forest. As you can see Max liked it. Elsie

Seaweed on the beach. Lynne.

This beautiful amarylis was given to me at christmas by my daughter.Lindsay.

I had not seen any Deer for a few weeks and was about to ask last night on the Diary had any of you seen any Deer. As I was going to write it I saw at least a couple at the far end of the Valley. The light wasn’t very good, so I was unable to tell if the were any of the regular visitors to Denbury. Last year was an exceptional year at Denbury for Deer. I never for one moment expected to see a Rut in the Valley. I have got a bit of recorded footage of the Rut. When I get time I will try to show it. Some years back before we had the webcams we use to have a regular Herd of fourteen or more Red Deer visit us at Denbury. At the time I was not best pleased to see them in the Spring, when they would be eating the new Spring grass that we needed for our Cattle. Now I would much rather loose a little grass and see the Deer. It is a little price to pay.

Ewy must be the most lonely Sheep in the World. I really thought that she may have come down to search out Breeze or a least the other Sheep. But no, she just seems to keeps as far away as she can without loosing sight of the Farm. Although a couple of times I have caught her on the webcam down the Valley, but she doesn’t stay down there to long.

We had Holiday Guests for the past week, so the cable that we use for the Sheep and Horse web cam in the barn, needed to be used for their webcam live feed to the Cottage. We are able to let our guest see all of the web cam at once, but usually we put the four most popular on. We have put in a new cable, so that there will be a permanent feed for both. It should be working next week. As you can see none of the Sheep have lambed, but of course our Ram is no longer with them. We will need to replace him if we are to have Lambs next year. We will probably get a Texel Ram, the same breed as Minty, Dolly and most of the others. We will also get two or three Jacob Ewes. There was an advertisement in our Farm Suppliers for ten Jacob Ewe Lambs for sale. When we phoned we got an answer phone. The message that we have left has not been answered. There is still time, although I should think that they may have been sold. One thing that was for sure, I wasn’t going to have the ten.
