There are five new photographs on the Photo page starting…

There are five new photographs on the Photo page, starting from number one.

The sunset pic was taken from our B&B when we visited Oban a couple of years ago. Oban bay is in the foreground, and in the distance, you are looking towards the Isle of Mull. It truly is a beautiful place and well worth a visit. Some of the many Gold Finches that visit the garden daily. they are such colourful little birds. Liz.

Ponies in the New Forest. Dad took this picture of a cow in Mid Wales. Lynne.

This is Peters House in the USA, overlooking the Lake where the Ospreys nest.

Tonight when I went to feed the Badgers I could hear two Tawney Owls calling to each other in the valley. We often hear Owls, tonight it was more pronounced as it is so very still here tonight. When I returned after feeding, I panned the valley cameras around the field hoping that I would see at least one of them perched in a tree. I will leave the valley camera on just i case one comes in view.

There is a chance that the Deer that were in the valley last night, may return tonight. The Deer were seen yesterday afternoon when Tass and Kye were taken for their walk. Kye was the first to see them. There were five Red Deer, they were in the small field that you get to through the gateway, that you can see in the far left hand corner of the valley. She went to start to chase them. She soon stopped when called back. They probably didn’t see the Dogs as they ambled across the field into the wood.

The two Fox that I turned the camera onto are ready to mate. That is another good reason to leave the valley camera on tonight. It depends where they go in the valley if will will see it.

I set the Telescope to look at Mars tonight. The forecast was clear skies. Unfortunately with the cloud there is not a Star in sight at the moment. If it clears, up to 9ish or maybe a little later I will put the camera on. It will only be on the Moon thumbnail. As soon as we get a clear night I will put it on. It is also a good time to see Saturn, although at this time of year you may not be able to see the rings very clearly. This will be the first time that we have tried to show one of the Planets, so I am not sure how it will turn out.

I have put five new photographs on the Photo Page…

I have put five new photographs on the Photo Page, starting from the first photograph. The First three are from Jacqui and the fourth and fifth are from Elsie. There are a few that have been sent in that will put on over the next few days.

One of the large flock of Parquets that fly around the area called in for a snack. Not sure what species of bat this was but it was emerging from the roof of our holiday cottage last August in Devon. My two dogs Sisco (the cocker spaniel) and Ally (the lab named because he was found abandoned in an ally only 3 months old in early January!) Regards, Jacqui

Max was a little devil when he was a puppy and was into mischief all the time. He fell in the pond on may occasions. Also an interesting Robin story from a Newspaper. Elsie.

I don’t know about you, but I definitely ate and drunk to much over the past three days. I would have liked to have sat down for a bit longer, although we had less work to do with the Horses this year than any other, being able to have them turned out. The main Badger camera decided to stop working, so a lot of yesterday and today was spent changing the camera over. The rain got into the camera on Christmas eve. With the new tower it as easy to get it dry and it worked fine. Yesterday when I was controlling it suddenly wouldn’t move. Last week I talked a Tree Surgeon who was pruning some trees under the power cables, to take the old camera down from the telegraph pole that we used before we got the new tower. When he was up the thirty foot pole he did say that he didn’t feel very safe up it. I put the old camera up, but I didn’t have a bracket for it, so I needed to do major alterations to get the camera up. After seeing the picture I am pleased I did. The camera I took down was a different type than I usually use, and I wasn’t best pleased with it.

Every year about this time the Buzzards start to mark out their territory in this area. For the past few days we have seen three pairs flying above the farm seeing who can make the most noise. As the weeks pass we usually see many more pairs. I remember one year there were fourteen pairs flying above the Farm. That was the year when one of the pairs kept landing in Smugglers field. I thought it strange at the time. One of the pair was very small and it looked weak. One morning when I walked around the lake I found the Buzzard in a shallow part of the water. We dried it off and away it flew off. The next morning it was in the same place but wasn’t able to fly. We took it to West Hatch RSPCA, where they have a wildlife hospital. If it had survived they would have released back at Denbury, but it never did return.

It was good to see the Deer in the valley this evening. There is always a chance that they will be shot this time of year. For the past two days there has been continuous shooting in the area, and it will carry on until New Years day. The pair of Deer have been coming and going for most of the year. It is a Roe Doe and her Kid. There was a good chance that they went up to the Badger feeding area last night that Camera Two was on, as I saw Deer foot prints leading up to the area this morning when I filled the Bird feeders. I don’t like leaving that camera on because of the Rats, but I will tonight as there is a good chance that the Deer found the Badger food, and they may well return tonight on the chance that there may be more food.

I have put on four new photographs The first one…

I have put on four new photographs. The first one is from Chris. Chris and his Wife Holidayed a Denbury the week Willow was born, when he took the photograph. Thanks for the Wensleydale Cheese Chris. The second and third are from Julia, The Bird is a Black Cap. All for photographs sent by Julia are from her Garden. The Fourth photograph is from Janet. This is part of her email. I hope this photo will be OK for the forum. It is a female Sparrow Hawk, in my back garden, she managed to pluck several feathers from the chest of the starling, the noise the starling made was horrible, I thought it would die, but when I opened my back door, the birds both flew away, in opposite directions, of course. PLEASE TRY TO PUT A FEW LINES ABOUT YOUR PHOTOGRAPHS.

Elsie your photographs of the Fox were to dark and the Fox to far away. I could have made you look a rubbish photographer, but I am to kind. When any of you send in photographs please add a return receipt, so that you know I received them. We have a number of photographs to go on the photo page, all will go on.

We finally managed to get the Sheep camera working today. The problem that I had was the camera is a mobile unit, with the controller etc all in one in a large case. When wire in to our webcam system, I should have been able to control the camera as I would any of the other moving cameras, I couldn’t, and I could not work out why not. This morning I spent two or three hours trying to get it going, in the end I decided to put the camera in position without having control. We set it all up positioned on the Sheep, when I tried to get the picture on the screen it was blank, I tried other channels, the picture came up and I also had control. Somehow I had put the camera on twp opposing channels. Making it right took two minutes, so I am not best pleased that I have spent so much time on the camera unnecessarily.

With the camera working as it should, we will now be able to show the Sheep and Willow with the new Foal with the same camera. Over the next couple of days I will put an infra-red lamp in the barn so that we will be able to see both the Fillies and the Sheep of a night. I am going to leave the Sheep in the Barn until they Lamb. Partly as we have no secure areas to stop them breaking out, and disappearing as they did earlier in the year, the other reason is it will be good to be able for you to see the Ewes Lambing. I am trying to think of a good area to be able to fence of a largish area for the Sheep to go into once they have Lambed. It was ideal and good viewing when they were in the Valley with the Fox walking in between the Sheep, without the Sheep bothering one bit, although I cant remember seeing many Deer when the Sheep were in the Valley. I could fence off an area in the Valley, but there is now way of telling if the fence would discourage any of our Wildlife. What ever, if I keep the Sheep I will need to fence an area for them. I keep on making more work for myself.

The new Horses should be at Denbury Sunday morning. I spoke to the person who has been looking after them for a couple of days until they were collected. The Broodmare has been with him for a few days. The Foal only arrived last evening with her Mother. They thought that it would be better if the Foal was weaned last night, she was lightly sedated, just to make sure that she did not get to upset, causing her to try to get out of the stable, that she was in when her Mother was taken away. This morning she was very calm, she was calling a little, but not as much as they thought that she may of. It is not a nice job weaning, but it has to be done. The Foal was born in April, so like Willow she was also left with he Mother for a lot longer than they would normally be. We have got to do the same with Willow and we are not looking foreword to it. But at least Willow will now have company.

The Father Christmas Webcams are now working We had to…

The Father Christmas Webcams are now working.

We had to get the Sheep in this afternoon. The weather has been awful for the past few days and although Sheep do stay out, bad weather will bring them down. A couple of them looked a bit low, especially the Portland Ram. He is no spring chicken, and wouldn’t have long to go. I really should have kept one of the other Rams that I sent to Market, but I felt sorry for the old chap. If I had kept two Rams there would have been fights, with the young Ram trying his luck, for sure he would have taken over.

All the Sheep are now in the Barn. Unfortunately I sent the only reel of the coax wire that sends the signal for the camera, to a new location that we should be doing in the new year. If I had the wire I would have put a camera up in the Barn so that you can see the Sheep in the barn. The wire should be back with me on Monday, and I should be able to have the camera working by Tuesday at the latest.

I had hoped that the Sheep would have followed a feed bag when we moved them. The Barn is only fifteen yards from where they were fenced in around the lake. Of course being Sheep they didn’t follow the bag. As soon as they got out of the fenced area they got their heads down and starting munching away on the grass. Mind you the grass was definitely greener on the other side, so you couldn’t blame them. At least they didn’t have it on their toes, much to all of our relief. We couldn’t leave them out without being fenced in so we had to move them manually. I hope any of you who manage to see the sorrowful episode, could not lip read. If you did and could, I apologise. I am not very patient when it comes to Sheep. Some of them are very friendly, that being the case, and those that are not, you would have thought that they would have been by now, with me feeding them every day. There are three or four that keep away from me every time that I go in with them with hay. Being Sheep when they run away most of the other run with them. Dolly, Minty and Ramsden are normally are the exceptions.

We easily caught Dolly and Minty, and they were carried over to the barn. The others had us running about a bit, it could have been worse. In the end we managed to pen in a few at a time and carried those over to. The weather forecast is not good for a few days, at least, so they will be kept in the Barn until it looks as if it is going to be more settled, for a while. I will make up my mind about it. But it would be good for you to be able to see the Sheep lamb.

I had hoped to have been able to show you the Remote Duck working over the weekend. To be honest I wished that I had never started it in the first place. Believe me I hate the duck. If it was real I would have eaten it by now. The engine is in, and working, but I am having problems with the steering. The propeller and rudder are a special one piece unit. To posh really for what I am doing, but it seemed the easiest way of getting the Duck working. I have had to make various additions to the steering, but every time I go to move it a part comes undone. I think that I have found the solution, well I hope I have. I phoned a shop this morning, and were they helpful. They sell Remote Controlled Helicopters www.buzzflyer.co.uk they really were the most helpful people I have spoken to about the Duck. If get the Duck working I may get a Helicopter to look around the farm with a camera. Buzzflyers are sending me the parts that they think will solve the problem that I am having with the steering. They are no going to charge me either. If you know any one who is looking to buy a Remote Controlled Helicopter, let them know about Buzzflyers. Once I know that the Duck will float and swim around the lake, I will fit the camera. I hope that will be a bit easier.

Bliss and Misty arrived at their new home in Chantilly…

Bliss and Misty arrived at their new home in Chantilly at about 10.30am this morning. When I spoke to the Horse Transporter Driver, he assured me that they had both travelled very well and had not sweated up at all, always a good sign. The sea crossing was from Portsmouth was very calm. Both Fillies unloaded in his words, like old pros, pity the didn’t load as well. At the moment they are stabled next to each other. I must admit that I am relieved that they have arrived with no problems. It is not nice going out to the stables and yard without them being there, I reckon that it will take a good few days to get use to it. I will be travelling to Chantilly within the next few days, and I will let you know what it is like and how Bliss and Misty are. I shall also take a few photos to show you on the website.

The Red Deer Stag and the Hinds must be in the woods around Denbury. I saw the young Stag who was with them and being chased off on Monday night, but not the main herd. The young Stag would not have been far from the Herd. With a bit of luck they may be around tonight. The Stag came very close to the camera last night and I managed to get a good close in on the camera . I pretty sure that I saw eyes through the mist when that came down.

What we have seen over the past couple of days to our surprise, right above Lady’s stable was a Sparrow feeding a fledgling. We have also seen a lot of Blackbirds near the Farm House, and it looked very much as if two might have been mating. I will keep a look out to see if they have a nest.

I spoke to the Scottish Wildlife Trust about their webcams not working. Peter the Manager has had an accident. As he is the only person looking after the Lock of the Lowe’s visitors centre in the Winter there is no one else to get the webcams going. They will be back ASAP. Fortunately Denbury Farm has had some good wildlife visiting.

Going by the Forum none of you managed to see…

Going by the Forum, none of you managed to see the DENBURY FARM RUT last night. It as only by luck that I managed to see it. The last thing that I do before going up to bed, is to pan the valley camera, to see if there is anything of interest to be seen in the valley. It was quite late, about 12.10am that I first caught a glance of a Red Deer Stag grazing close to a Hind. I initially thought that it was the Stag that we saw a few weeks back, mind you it could well have been. In the distance I saw a couple of sets of eyes that caused me to pan around more. The Stag without me seeing it must have crossed the stream, and as I was panning he came into view just as he was covering a Hind. A little later I also saw a young Stag trying to mate, unfortunately for him the Hind was having none of it. I managed to see at least ten sets of eyes in the distance, some of them from the wood, I should imagine that there were more that were not facing the IR lamps, so it was a fair sized Herd. By about 12.50pm they had all gone into the woods. I managed to record a bit of it, but the view at the end of the valley was poor, my fault as I had not changed a bulb that had blown months back. My lads have also laid armoured cable in the stream, so that we could put another lamp further down the valley. The Electrician is coming at the weekend to wire it up. In the meantime I put a new bulb in the IR lamp that had blown. I think that the lamp is at the right angle, so if the Red Deer return tonight it should be a better view than I did last night.

I don’t know what time that the Deer came to the valley last night. I usually put the picture in picture on with the valley camera going, whilst watching the television, but since Monday when I fitted a camera up in the barn to try to see what had startled me on Sunday, when I went to get the Badger food, I have been watching that camera. ct and Karen asked about the camera. All that I have seen since watching the camera since Monday, is a Field Mouse last night. One of my Lads saw a Rat this afternoon in the barns doorway. It was not a Rat that I saw, it was either a Stoat or Weasel. I will only put the camera on if I see anything. Believe me its like watching paint dry.

My Duck cam is going to be started this evening. I only got the engine and other bits and pieces today. I had to go and buy another two Mallard decoys as I cut the hole in the decoys before I had got the rudder, and it is in the wrong place. Fortunately they were not very expensive. It is going to take me a couple of weeks to get it on to the water working, then I will have to get a very small wireless day night camera. It is not worth buying the camera until I get the Duck moving on the water.

I seemed to have had a few broadband problems today…

I seemed to have had a few broadband problems today. I lost my connection on one of my computers a few times and the webcams went down. They seem OK at the moment. Both SWT cameras have been off for a few days, I have phoned to try to see what the problem is, but unfortunately I have been unable to get an answer. In the Winter months the centre is closed. Peter the Manager does not go there every day. I am sure he will get the webcams going very soon.

Both Bliss and Misty were worked in the sand school today. I am sorry but I was so busy I forgot to turn the camera on, I will try to remember tomorrow, if they are worked. I didn’t see them work myself today, but I was told that they both did very well. Misty is sound now, her foot must be a lot better as there is no sign of her being lame.

Elaine, I missed the Deer the other evening, so I cant tell you what they were. I have only seen the Muntjac Deer once this year, and that was early in the Spring. This is the first year for a long time that I haven’t seen them all through the summer. I would regularly see them with a Fawn.

Elsie, I should think that most of the Ewes that are in the fenced area around the lake are in Lamb. I check them regularly to see if their udders are getting big. It look like Dolly and Minty could lamb before Christmas, but don’t hold your breath, as I have said many times before I am not a very good Sheppard. If any look as if the are going to lamb soon, I will put them in the stable that the lambs that went to Market on Saturday were in. The stable that they were in is in the same little block that we do the Foaling from, so the camera is already in place. My Lads will be mucking the stable out later this week. I thought that I may have got a phone call from the Auctioneer that were selling the Lambs, telling me that they had not sold. It wasn’t the Rare Breeds sale on Saturday as we thought, we missed read the paper, it was the previous week. The lambs were not the best that we have sold. On a Rare Breed sale there would have been no problem with them selling, but being it was a general sale I did wonder if they would sell, and I was expecting a call. What ever, the cheque that I get for them wont make me very rich. I shouldn’t think that I would get any more than a couple of pounds each for them.

ct, today I fitted a camera up in the barn that I thought that I had heard the Rat in last evening. I also put up an infra red lamp and I am watching the camera as I am typing. I should think that it is a Stoat or Weasel. If I see any animal in the barn I will put the camera on the website. I don’t know if Rats attack humans, when I see one or even think that I have heard a Rat, I don’t hang about to long for them to get the chance. I have heard like most of you, that if a Rat is cornered it will jump over what ever is cornering it, and that it has landed on what ever it was. I really cant see that, but who knows.

From last nights Diary We do intend subject to there…

From last nights Diary. We do intend, subject to there not being any unforeseen circumstances to let you see Bliss and Misty being ridden. We think that next Sunday from about 10am would be a good time. It may not be right on that time. You will know we are going to show them, by a view of the yard in front of the Farm house on both Camera Two and the Puppy Camera.

Bliss and Misty need to be able to ride in control, to be able to do a figure of eight. We need to be doing that by next Sunday, as just a week later they will be on their way to France. We would like to have them trotting by the time they go away. The Trainer will take them on from there. We have not pushed them into do any thing that would not want to do. Just at a very easy slow pace and not more than fifteen minutes at a time. We will need to get them trotting on a head collar next week, that I reckon is going to be fun. When they trot and canter in the their field, they very often give a buck or two. We will need to get them out of that on a head collar and lead rope or they are liable to do it under saddle, and the riding will finish as a Western Rodeo.

As some of you may have seen on Camera Two we have a few Firework displays and parties going off in the area. I must admit that do like a firework party myself. Up to about four years ago we always had a display up the valley with the people living or on Holiday on the Farm. We use to build a large bonfire, get to many fireworks and have a feed and a few or maybe too many drinks, but it was always a goodnight. We really were being selfish. The Horses definitely don’t like the noise. Arnie as big as he is cant stand the bangs. He doesn’t run around mad, but you can see he is concerned. Even when there are shoots in the area he doesn’t like it. We did at one time stable the Horses, but they seemed a lot more restless inside. Now they all stay out on Guy Fawkes night.

The Badgers didn’t worry to much about the fireworks going off. When I fed them tonight there was a lot of bangs going off, it didn’t stop them coming out. The Badger were another reason that we stopped our displays. Their Sett is very near where we use to build our bonfire. If we had changed the place, we would have been near another Sett. Another worry was that a stray firework may have got into our barn with the hay and straw. We are fortunate that our nearest neighbours rarely have fireworks. That could cause us a few problems. Also our village is far enough not to have to worry to much about stray fireworks, and our closest large village would be over a mile away. That is where I am pointing Camera Two this evening. Being in the quite location and valley that we are in, we can still hear the fireworks going off as if they are a lot nearer than they are. Better go and make sure that the Horses and Sheep are all OK.

Elsie I am sorry I have no way of putting…

Elsie, I am sorry I have no way of putting photograph on to the website at the moment. We are in the process of updating the website using the URL beta2.denburyfarm.co.uk. I will speak to the person who hosts my website, and the camera streaming, in the hope that he can make it possible.

When I changed the cameras over this morning, I could see on the lake camera, that the Ewe lamb that I had introduced into the small flock of Sheep in the fenced off area around the Lake, was not looking to good. I did think that she was dead and I changed the camera over whilst I went to look at her. Even when I got next to her she did not move, only when I lifted her head was there any sign of life. When I tried to get her to stand she just flopped over. I picked the lamb up and laid her in the barn. She was quite wet from the rain in the night, I dried her off with a stiff rub down. That made her perk up, and soon she was eating a little of the hay that I had put in front of her.

When I first put the Ewe lamb in with the other Sheep she wasn’t eating that well, and I found her a little weak one morning. After that scare I thought that she was settling down. I should think that although I have seen the Ewe lamb eating, she has not been getting what she needed, and with the rain last night it made her a little weak. I left her in the barn whilst I went in for a coffee. When I went back half an hour later to check her, she was gone. I found her close by, she was eating the grass and was looking a lot better. I checked her after we turned the Horses out, after their night feed and she was looking good.

Just before I fed the Sheep tonight, I had a quick look to see if I could see the Ewe lamb. I don’t know why, as I was going to give the Sheep their hay straight away, but something seemed to be telling me to check the Sheep. When I got to them I only counted ten. I thought that the missing one had probably jumped over the electric wire. As it was only one missing and the fence was still up I would normally leave looking for the missing Sheep later, if not in the morning. Again something told me to look in the stream. Just on a bend I could see a little bit of white, it was obviously the missing Sheep. I called out to her, when she realised it was me, she walked towards my way, it was a Portland so I was able to grab hold of one of her horns. The help that I had called for arrived, and between us with one in the stream pushing and me pulling we got the Ewe out.
